I like that too. My experience of having parents was shall we say.. different by quite a bit. So it's always nice to see genuine stuff like that, it makes me smile inside that other people, someone at least, gets a nice childhood. 😎 I'm also Buddhist.... and sometimes, someone is quite obviously a natural Buddha. Listening to and being around someone like that is akin to watching butterflies... 😆 So there's that. I'm moving to the seaside soon. I used to catch eating crabs and lobsters off the rocks at Newbiggin by Sea in Northumberland. I carried old pantyhose and stuffed them in so they could not chew each others' claws off. Carried it like a scarf! I used a 4 foot metal hook called a clique made from copper rod with the end bent over and flattened. I could tell by the feel and sound where there was a crab under the submerged ledges in the deep tidal pools. Lobsters always needed a front and back entrance and we were lucky to have an old shipwrecked boiler at the end of the rocks which was full of tubes. I collected softshell crab which were often being protected by a hardshell crab. I also collected what we called pinnels which were hardshell crabs which were ready to molt. You would pinch off the end of a leg and see the new leg inside. The crabs were good bait for codling, which we wrapped in sheep's wool from the wire fences on the moors. I really enjoy your videos.... they bring back great memories. Thanks, Bryan

Can't thank you enough for these excellent posts. Fascinating rockpool life from the very start. The topknot really stood out under the ultra violate torch, and you got your reward with the lobster. Will be going back through this video with the Great British Marine Animals book (To make sure you have identified all the species properly ha ha). Nice seeing James back out lucky boy has a fantastic dad showing him the ropes keep safe and thanks for posting.

In cases when the exact species is not easy distinguishable I often use the family term. Like "Pink Coral Weeds" otherwise the videos would become really tedious. 😊

Good result with the lobster. Now I know that my dad wasn't disappointed when I too as a kid preferred my snacks to fresh boiled lobster with butter. Some day James will be able to eat a whole one.

Another cracking informative video, I loved it, thanks for showing it. My nearest coast is the muddy wash, it couldn't be more different. James is really growing up and looking fit now, how he has changed, like all children, since we first saw him. When he does get a taste for lobsters you'll regret it, one won't be enough.

ALOHA from Hawaii, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean! Love your videos & that you mentioned opihi! LOL....They are an acquired taste, as with any other marine species...urchin, blowfish, sea cucumber & seaweed, just to mention a few. Keep the videos coming & if you/your family ever decide to plan a trip to this side of the world, MAYBE you are able to connect w/some Hawaiian fishers, who can teach you about our Hawaiian sea creatures & methods!
