Being a fan of AZ Alkmaar I rewatched the incident with the attack on Esteban in the semi-finals of the KNVB cup a lot. A fan ran out to the keeper to karatekick him in his back. Well, thinking that an average keeper has above average responses, Esteban turned around, kicked the guy on the ground and gave him a kick afterwards. Stewards came by, players tried to calm him down. After the "fan" was taken away by stewards, the referee gave Esteban a red card. Coach of AZ, Gert-Jan Verbeek, stopped the match and afterwards all parties decided that the match would be played later that week. AZ won the game with 2-3 Fun fact. The new match was only played with 20.000 children as supporters. Sounded very weird...

dudes, it's the *Playground* FA rule book. funny to see that it's the same where you live (I'm Portuguese and we did the same when we were kids). Also fouls were only awarded if the majority of players agreed with it. You could *never* piss off the ball owner, or you'd have no ball to play! And when we measured goals, it would be like 6 or 7 steps (well, actually, feet) and we'd *always* make a tiny bigger goal for the opponents. Oh, and most important of all: no hard shots and no high shots or the keeper will claim it went over the non-existing bar. haha good times

You're wrong on the drop ball rule, only one player for team can compete for it and it's used when the ref stops the play for any reason not listed for another form of restart, for example due to a serious injury to a player, interference by an external party, or a ball becoming defective. It's not that hard to understand

Law 8: The start and restart of play "There is no minimum or maximum number of players required to take part in a dropped ball" and " The referee cannot decide who may or not take part in a drop ball" This effectively means that they were right, 5 players from each team could contest a drop ball if they really wanted to.

There was one mindf*cking rule somewhere, that if you score in extra time it counts as 2 goals. There was a team who needed for goal difference 2 goal win and was leading with 1 goal so they were trying to score in both sides (so if they cant score in time the 2nd goal, they could score that goal in extra time)

One more famous example for "foreign object" is from the semifinal of the UEFA Cup in 2009 (also the last season before it was replaced by the Europa League). In the return leg Hamburg versus Bremen, a Hamburg player wanted to pass the ball to his keeper, but the ball was deflected by a ball of paper lying on the pitch to result in a corner kick for Bremen. They scored from that corner kick and advanced to the final. Ironically, the ball of paper had been thrown onto the pitch by a Hamburg supporter as part of a choreography.

The problem with allowing something like NLSA to be a mainstream thing in football is it would just encourage lesser teams to try harder for a draw knowing they have more chance in the shootout than they do in the 90 minutes so it would only promote negative football. There is a growing trend toward teams being more defenisive maybe if they brought in a rule that teams get some points for every so many goals they score it would encourage smaller teams to play more attacking football.

New rule in Norway (was introduced last year and still haven't been removed despite major critics): If you run into the opponents goal and pick up the ball after you have scored, you will be awarded a yellow card. F.ex a scenario where your side is under with 2-0 and you then score a goal five minutes before full time, you decide to pick up the ball from the opponents net to waste as little time as possible in hope to score another goal. This will award you a yellow card. And yes, if you already have a yellow card, you will be awarded a red for picking up the ball. A few players were actually sent off last season because of this rule.

You missed an even weirder rule on own goals. When taking a goal kick you can't score an own goal sure but if the ball goes directly into the goal it is a corner for the other team BUT if the ball leaves the penalty area before entering your own goal and no one touches it then you can retake the goal kick.

Hi. Thanks for the video. I have a question regarding own goal free kick. How did that play out in the final of the world cup. There was an own goal from a corner. And it still counted (for France)
@greatredchicken2 жыл бұрын
But the team that received the own goal wasn't France. The rule only applies if you both perform the free kick and receive the own goal without anyone else touching the ball. That's why you almost never see it happen, because you'd have to kick the ball towards your own goal, and there's no reason to do that from an advantageous position (and most of the free kicks you get happen in the rival's side of the field. You'd also have to kick the ball at least 70-80 meters backwards)

Hockey and Soccer fan here. Having a penalty shootout in soccer is bluff. The field is bigger than a rink, and 5 seconds isn’t enough to run that far while keeping possession of the ball.

I think the back pass rule and the golden/silver goals is fairly common knowledge to anyone who follows the game. Speaking of the golden/silver goals: it was a terrible way to decide a match but it was better than tossing a coin to decide winners, which happened a few times in the 60s and 70s. I'm surprised this wasn't mentioned in the video.

Not sure if this is an actual rule but in my league if you shouted 'mine' it was a free kick to the opposition

Great video, the lousiest title job possible ;) (Half of the ones you mention actually don't exist anymore - and many are anything but unbelievable, rather just curious or quaint at best.9

In the ridiculous shootout 5 seconds from 35 yards would take lots of speed and try to shoot from far out maybe from outside of the box

There is now a law against contesting drop balls. To clairfy, you cant contest it.

On a goal kick if the ball doesn't leave the 18 yard box or if another player touches the ball inside the box. The goal kick has to be retaken. On a penalty if the penalty taker hits the post or cross bar and the ball comes back out he's not allowed to touch the ball until another player has. If a team has made 3 substitutions then one player gets injured And the game goes to penalties. If the score line is even and 10 players have taken a penalty. The injured player has to take the 11th penalty

For a long time there were no penalty shootouts which led to games never ending because no team scored the winning goal which meant the games had to be stopped when the night arrived because there were no floodlights. Also, it is illegal for a player to punch a teammate.

You may laugh at NASL penalties but how is it any worse of a way to decide a game than regular penalties

what about the rule that if you drew a final, you used to have to go to a replay instead of pens
