Before you comment something nasty (I’m looking at you land cruiser die hard fans) make sure you actually watch the whole video. I did not say the land cruiser is inferior to the sequoia. That’s simply not true. I’m just listing the 3 reasons why the sequoia was a better choice for us. The sequoia is about 90% as capable and reliable as the land cruiser and is literally half the price. Things likes global support just do not matter to us given that we drive completely in the United States. If you are a land cruiser die hard, I’m with you. I think land cruisers are awesome and if I could afford one, I would certainly have one. The price point of the sequoia allowed us to get into overlanding at a price we could afford. If we waited till we could afford a land cruiser, we’d have to wait years before being able to go explore our beautiful country.

Comparing the sequoia to the LC aren’t a good comparison, the LC are full loaded with luxury amenities that Toyota has to offer at the time with all of the off-roading features of a 4Runner TRD pro. Once you drive an LC, it will hard to go back to a sequoia

I've had the 80 series and actually still have my 80 series for rock crawling. I also have 100 series and just sold my 2002 one and also have a 2002 Sequoia Limited. The 100 series and Seq. are very similar in driving feel , the 4wd system very similar , the ride quality though the Seq. is much plusher ride even with lift kits on either vehicle the seq. has a better ride, I'm sure due to a little more weight. The room for two adults overlanding is what made me decide to keep the Seq. and sell my 100 series. I needed room for 2 adults on the go in remote places in some of the roughest trails to be able to sleep in the back without being cramped. The 100 series just doesn't have the room in the back to be able to lay stretched out. Gas mileage is a wash and price is all over the place. I paid about the same price for both my 100 series and my Seq. Both were great mileage 1 owner vehicles. To me the only difference I can see negative on the Seq over the 100 series was my break over angle (little longer wheelbase) and the over hang in the rear on ledges. Other then that the Seq was to me the better vehicle. One other thing I liked about the Seq. is you can run different style lockers on the Seq. since its not full time AWD like the 100 series. With the 100 series I was limited to running ARB front an rear lockers like my 80 series also has. In the Seq. I can run one ARB or Electronic style locker with conventional locker up front since you can swap to 2wd in the Seq. Small things but they made my decision for me.

Also note that the Land Cruiser is a Full time 4X4 so you can't put it in 4x2. To me the Sequoia feels peppier and I know it gets 2-3 miles better mpg. This means instead of 11-13, it'll get 13-16 mpg plus the Sequoia holds 1 gallon more gas in the tank.. That's a big difference especially when considering range per tank.

Good summary. I bought my 2004 Sequoia 4WD last August. 150,000 miles, one owner, in great condition for $4,000. Love it, solid, great to drive, roomy. As you say parts are cheap. Bulletproof engine and transmission. Great in the recent snow we had, was blocked in at a truck stop at 2am due to trucks being stuck on the entry/exit hill. I put it in 4WD and it went through a deep snow filled deep ditch at the side of the road and powered in and out of it in no time, didn't even have to shift to low or lock the hubs, awesome vehicle and as you say they are creeping up in value. We also have a 2019 Forester and I reckon our Sequoia will outlast it and then some!

I was in the same boat as the guy in the video...went for the Sequoia as well... Pros for me: 1. Cloth seat option in the SR5 trim. 2. Same V8 as the LC 3. Lower Insurance rate 4. More affordable overall 5. Same reliability as a LC 6. 4WD option if you must have it, which most americans WILL NOT need it. 7. Much lower price of entry; bought mine with 148k miles for $3400 Cons for me: 1. It's not a LC, but whatever it's 90% there.

Having had both sequoia and land cruiser, you do have valid point here. Both are great, very good and in my opinion, miles ahead of the domestic offerings. For me, the LC is more comfortable (current LC is a 200) and maintaining it is not a huge deal as I do it all myself. If the sequoia was my only option, I would not hesitate to buy one. I do wish the second-gen sequoia would have kept the solid rear axle. The aftermarket is starting to catch up with the second-gen though so maybe in the future they will be more common place in the overland community.

let's be honest, Land Cruisers are the pinnacle. HOWEVER depending on your real, actual use of a vehicle, buying the LC would not be worth the money AND it may be the wrong vehicle. I travel down to Mexico, where the Tacoma is commonplace (they're made in Baja) So, having a Tacoma would make sense if it ever breaks down (unlikely, but you never know). How much do you off road? how much do you tow? all are factors and the right vehicle for one person will be very different from the next person. I'm so very thankful that we have so many options and that we can easily move from one veh to the next if it doesn't work out.

You're right on. People don't understand how expensive it is to run and upkeep a 100 series. Being Toyotas flagship, you can't use aftermarket Rock auto parts, and the OEM prices are arm and leg. Also being a 15-23 year old vehicle, 100s all need an minor to major overhaul. People think that Toyota 100 series being the most reliable rig means that nothing wears out. They're dead wrong. Most 100s are worn to hell and need far more expensive and refurbish over a equivalent priced newer Sequoia/4Runner/Tundra/Tahoe/Jeep. Unfortunately, I was brought up as a die hard Land Cruiser fan, it runs in the family, but 95% of the time, the Tundra and Sequoia do it just as well, if not better suited.

I've driven the 200 series, almost bought one but I ended up with a 2013 Sequoia limited. Both have the same beautiful 5.7 v8, both are very capable SUVs, both consume insane amounts of fuel. Ain't none of these trucks cheap like a Yukon but I would say I am happier with the Sequoia mainly because of rear seat room. For some reason Toyota made the 3rd row flip up instead of folding down and we like to camp thus that rear seat was the deal breaker for us plus there's a lot more room in the 2nd row. It's very noticeable. Our situation didn't come with a huge price difference because the 200 series had a 160k and the Sequoia had 114k thus both had a similar price tag.. (expensive). I did like the 200 series styling a tad bit better but both vehicles felt very well built. I would venture to say both will last an incredibly long time as long as maintenance is done regularly. I really like the look of the 200 series interior slighly better our Sequoia has zero wood trim shockingly. A lot of silver, grey and black. It really feels more industrial over the 200 series. Not remotely as luxurious but we're not a bunch of city slickers looking for a weekend get away, we're fairly happy with the Sequoia's more pedestrian interior. I just wish it had some fake wood. Personal preference, of course. I think the extra luxury features actually get in the way, there's more to go wrong on the 200 series. We got things like heated leather seats, 3 zone automatic temperature control. Plenty there but very little to go bust while on the trails... I love our choice. Would I have made the 200 series work for us? Probably. Just the Sequoia fit the bill a little easier. I do love both vehicles.

The gx470 is a landcruiser Toyota put its look at your Lexus Manuel it states Toyota Corp welcomes your purchase of your Lexus motor vehicle. The irony is Lexus IS Toyota’s luxury division but there trucks are less expensive than Toyota’s Particulary the landcruiser who’s is best suv you can purchase. It’s only competition is the Defender as a four wheel off road vehicle. Sequoia will not beat a landcruiser in any aspect of off road trails. The sequoia is a soccer moms car it is what it is. Nothing more nothing less. Landcruiser has a history behind it. Toyota despite its cheaper price point can’t move sequoia like they do landcruiser. Probably for a very good reason. Land cruiser has been around since the willys jeep sequoia not going to make the next decade.

I ended up with a LC100. Is it an overbuilt swiss watch with 274k still smooth as ice as it did off the showroom floor in 2000? Yes. Did I also pay too much money for it because i'm not nearly going to use it to it's fullest capabilities more so than what I could have done just as easily in a Sequoia? Yes. But is it sick af? Also yes. All jokes aside I haven't driven a 1st gen but I imagine because of the weight and the mcpherson strut suspension in comparison to a literal firetruck torsion bar front suspenion in the landcruiser. That the Seq is a lot more comfortable to drive around town and on the highway as a result. Also the extra space, clutch. The parts availability on the cheap, extra clutch. Roll down hatch window, super clutch. But I have a split tailgate worth a downpayment on a condo so there. Also my dog children get their own climate controls that they can't reach because their on the roof.

Does either generation of the Toyota Sequoia Have A-TRAC??? Not TRAC but A-TRAC. The 2008 manual book page 214 has a quick mention of it but no other info is given, how and when it is activated? Is this the same A-TRAC as FJ Cruiser's or Land Cruiser? The only info it offers is, A-TRAC (Active Traction Control) for 4WD Maintains drive power and prevents the all wheels from spinning when starting the vehicle or accelerating on slippery roads. That is all it says. The 2006 Sequoia Manual page 184 mentions states, Active traction control system (four−wheel drive models) The active traction control system automatically helps prevent the spinning of 4 wheels (4WD mode) or rear wheels (2WD mode) when the vehicle is started or accelerated on slippery road surfaces. When the ignition key is turned to “ON”, the system automatically turns on. CAUTION Under certain slippery road conditions, full traction of the vehicle and power against 4 wheels (4WD mode) or rear wheels (2WD mode) cannot be maintained, even though the active traction control system is in operation. Do not drive the vehicle under any speed or maneuvering conditions which may cause the vehicle to lose traction control. In situations where the road surface is covered with ice or snow, your vehicle should be fitted with snow tires or tire chains. Always drive at an appropriate and cautious speed for the present road conditions. Is this A-TRAC or something similar??? How does either of these supposed A-TRAC'S on the Sequoias compare to the Land Cruiser or other equipped Toyota models that do have A-TRAC. Please help me verify any of this or better yet explain it to me because i am tired of going in circles with everyone in the Toyota Forums and local dealerships that either cannot or will not specify 100% if they do or not. Thank You. Toyota's reply was, 02/01/2021 05:52 PM Dear Mr. Robinson, Thank you for contacting Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. We appreciate you allowing us the opportunity to assist you with your inquiry. Both the 2006 and the 2008 Toyota Sequoia's are equipped with A-TRAC Active traction control system in the 4WD models. The 2WD option came equipped with TRAC Traction Control. The system becomes activated automatically when the vehicle is turned on. You can refer to page 185 of the Owners Manual. It is not the same system as the FJ Cruiser, due to the fact that on the FJ the A-TRAC system has to be activated from the A-TRAC switch. You are correct, that information is a accurate description of the active traction control system and how it works. The difference between the Sequoia's and the FJ Cruiser is that it is a automatic system on the Sequoia and a manual system on the FJ Cruiser. You can refer to page 185 under section 2-4. Using other driving systems of the FJ Cruiser's Owners Manual. We hope you found this information helpful. Your email has been documented at our National Headquarters. If we can be of further assistance, please feel free to contact us. Sincerely, Courtney G. Toyota Brand Engagement Center Thank you. So in a nut shell yes Sequoias DO HAVE A-TRAC. Buy a Sequoia at Half the price of a 100 and have just as much fun off road. I have no doubt some 100 owners will tell me how i am wrong or that the 100 is better, Yawn.

I own a 2003 Toyota LC bought it for 14,500 with 123k. 1.5 years ago now it’s got 165k. Have done nothing other then change oil and put on bigger tires. It’s the best work horse and it doesn’t break. The Sequoia will never hold the value like the LC. I can keep putting on miles yet my value is still there. The Sequoia is weak in so many ways comparing it to the LC. Suspension, frame, off-road ability the 4 wheel drive system plus it’s designed for 25 years. The Sequoia is basically a Tundra that can fit 8. The LC and Sequoia are nothing the same. Own one and you’d understand.

I never said that there were no advantages for the land cruiser, in fact I’d definitely agree that it’s a vastly superior product. It easily the most overbuilt vehicle of our time.... but for us the sequoia was the better choice. It gave us everything we wanted in an adventure vehicle and was the right price. If we had waited for a time in our life where we could afford a land cruiser, we might never have gotten into this sort of hobby. I like these trucks but no offense, a Tahoe of the same era have a better 4wd system, a superior frame and more durable chassis. All while having more power and will last just as long if not longer and not having to deal with a timing belt. Also the Tahoe (00-2006) has a slightly smaller wheelbase if im not mistaken.
@TheFraziers
@TheFraziers 3 жыл бұрын
I think I might have to respectfully disagree. I’m curious why you suggest the 4wd system is better. They are essentially the same system. Two-speed transfer case and 50/50 torque split between the front and rear axle. If anything the sequoia and land cruiser have ATRAC too. The Tahoe sometimes has a G-80 in the rear diff but they aren’t as effective as ATRAC and are subject to destroying the diff. The Tahoe might have a slightly shorter wheelbase but the sequoia is going to win with a better approach angle and better ground clearance overall. It’s also worth noting that my family has owned almost nothing but GM vehicles for the past 20 years and they’ve generally been completely worn out after 200,000 miles. Our sequoia feels almost fresh off the lot after 250,000. Thanks for contributing to the discussion.
@mdk7376
@mdk7376 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheFraziers my family and I have had multiple GM vehicles well past 500k miles and have had great success with them. Also spending anytime in the auto industry will tell you the same thing. Sequoias dont have a 50/50 transfer case and only the later ones had a center diff lock. The Tahoe actually has a part 4wd system and when switched to 4wd, actually locks 50/50 front and rear. The G80s aren't the greatest lockers but they are lockers that usually work fine in the bigger diffs, especially with over landing and basic trails. As far as ground clearance goes, thats something id have to fact check. IIRC back in the day when one of the mags compared these SUVs stock in an off-road challenge, the Tahoe was the clear winner with the sequoia having the worst clearance and angles.
@TheFraziers
@TheFraziers 3 жыл бұрын
@@mdk7376 I’m glad to hear you’ve had good experience with them. I must correct you on the sequoias transfer case. In 2003, all 4wd sequoias did in fact have a 2 speed transfer case and a locking center diff. When it’s locked, it does split 4wd evenly between the axles. I can confirm this is this case because my sequoia will “crab” when making sharp turns with it locked. I believe Tahoes have a 4wd auto mode which is comparable to a sequoia in 4wd with the diff unlocked and a 4Hi option which is just like the sequoia in 4wd with the diff locked. I can assure you that the 4wd systems are almost identical and definitely not different enough to declare a “winner” between the two. Honestly, if you’ve had good experience with Tahoes and other GM vehicles, then more power to you. We can kindly go our way and chose whatever vehicle we like. Competition amongst manufacturers is good for all of us 👍
