So sorry your first experience for an endoscopy was like that. I believe if they give a patient anesthetics and it doesnt work and they cant give something else they need to reschedule or patient gets to decide. Patients have rights and can speak up but dont feel at ease to do that. Thats when family comes in handy. Now Peter would speak up and say, were going to reschedule this when someone decides what is a med she can safely take that will work. You both have had so much experience you will teach and give them a lot of good info. To take care of you and also help to consider other patients needs and possible issues! I hope they are appreciative of such valuable knowledge. I believe they will learn quite quickly your a blessing to there work!

It's hilarious for me that you guys moved to Durham just months after I had to move back to Virginia Beach (because my health could no longer be managed on my own)! When Mary said how "Duke is a lot of walking," I was alone in my room like, "Yeah it is" haha. It's just a funny experience for me - I don't know why lol. Like I've never been to Boston, but I lived in Durham for almost 3 years, have followed your story for at least that long, and just know Durham so, so well! I was kicking myself on my need to move back home... Seriously, it was mere months between my exit and your arrival haha (obviously still catching up on vlogs after a year hiatus)

You’re right about lots of walking at Duke. Way, way far back is trauma orthopedics. I had to get a wheelchair at first when they were taking care of my broken hip, but later I walked it. Talk about a hard way to get your stamina back: all the the way from trauma ortho to the parking garage is a fur piece (southern for far away).

I'd love to know what you do too Mary! I have created folders for each of my specialists online. Each folder contains a notes page where I record notes from each visit, scans of documents, and call logs to keep track of who I talk to and what they say. I also have a spreadsheet with all my drs and their phone numbers, all my diagnosis, allergies, previous surgeries and all my meds (with doses, times and prescribing dr). My binder system was too heavy to take to all my appointments. And because all the files are online my family can access them if they need too. I have a direct link to the file on my phone and use my phone to input notes at my appointments.

I got to Duke all the time. Some clinics are faster then others. I’ve learned if it’s not connected to the Duke South Clinics where you were at it’s usually a lot quicker to get in and out. Also, your next pre-op testing see if they can schedule you at the one on Page Rd. The one you were at is always behind, Page Rd is usually a quick in and out with easier parking and they have radiology there too.

@@artastic_23 hey anna, I actually have POTS, but I don't have seizures. I am really sorry you are going thru that. And with asthma, too. You may want to check out Amy Fisher's channels (one is called 'amy's life' and then she has a vlogs channel too). She has battled POTS and a bunch of comorbidities for a long time. She has Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, which is what I have, and can be an underlying cause of POTS. I actually found the Frey Life thru amy mentioning them in a vlog. Christina Doherty might be another one to check out. Or there's another lady, Monica Snyder, who has a lot of these diagnoses and writes beautiful blogs at monicakayesnyder.com I think. I don't know how to say thank you to The Frey Life and the ppl I just mentioned for sharing their stories and bringing community to ppl who can't always go out and get it bc of illness. When my husband was going back for skin graft surgery for a burn he sustained from a kitchen fire I was a basket case. I had no support from my family (due to it being to early in the morning). So I climbed the walls for about 2 hours until some other people came in and I forced myself to sit so I wouldn’t make them nervous. Oh man that was the longest 2 hours of my life. Even though I knew that the hospital was ranked #1 in the nation. I’m thankful everything turned out great.

When I did my upper endoscopy when I was 17 I didn't get any sedation. I drank a small cup of something numbing for the upper throat but that was it. I think I could have gotten something for relaxing, but I didn't, don't know why. It was not a pleasant experience. I think it's normal to do it without sedation in Sweden, but I'm not sure. Just happy I only had to do it once!

In my country every procedure like colonscopy, endoscopy, ecc is under sedation. It wasn't in the past but there were some major incidents with people panicking and trying to take everything out and I think a woman died too so they decided that you can't do it awake. Unless allergies to drugs or something

Same for me while the doctor was drilling holes in the bone of my foot after a motorcycle accident to put metal pins in it. When i told them where all the different hands were holding my lower limbs they then believed me that i could feel everything below my waist. The nurse panicked a bit because she didn't know what to do. Everything was put on hold hoping the anaestetic would finally take effect but we ended up finishing it with lots of pain. When our body doesn't obey the doctors rules they rarely believe us.

I woke up pretty quickly during my first endoscopy, and they tried to knock me out using the max dose of meds and it didn’t work... EDS caused anaesthetic resistance, happened two more times (another endoscopy and wisdom teeth removal where they dislocated my jaw) before anyone would listen to me and actually agree to change the drugs. Then with new drugs I slept through but when they woke me up I was paralysed and had to be kept intubated until the paralysing drugs wore off 🙃

I have had several endoscopies without sedation. It seems to differ between hospitals. It doesn’t bother me anymore because they spray the back of my throat with an anaesthetic so I don’t feel the tube go down. Sometimes they scratch my throat when they pull the tube up and I have a sore throat for a few days which is the worst part.

Why do you need a pre op for endoscopy? I was awake for my colonoscopy and endoscopy? I got sedation but not put to sleep? I felt it wasn’t bad at all. Hope it goes well for you

I get put to sleep for both, full on anaesthesiologist and everything. It depends on the patient, AND the doctor.

I just had one, I get one every two years. I have hyena hernia and GERD. I couldn't believe going through that WITHOUT some sleepy MEDICINE. I also have to have a colonoscopy every year as I had colon cancer along with a enlarged spleen and diverticulosis and colitis. I am having cervical surgery December 6th, C5-6. So I am also going through pre-op procedures.
