I am a first year student at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, in the bachelor of design, and I have to say I've felt an overwhelming need to prove myself to my peers (My family mostly). One night I broke down crying because I wasn't sure if I wanted to pursue Design or if it was just my inability to escape a path forged by my family's contribution to my early passion for drawing. But after that night I pulled my head in and started focusing on design like I hadn't before. It was at my most vulnerable that I was most honest with myself and that I was able to discover for myself that despite having tried many different paths in high school like maths, languages, and English, this is what I really want to be. Since then I don't try to prove myself, but I simply grow each and every time I do a job. Love your videos you guys! Keep em coming!

“Shut up, and do the things that scare you and stop doing the things that are easy for you” THIS. I think this is one of the huge points on personal and professional progress. Like a muscle, if you don't push your brain further it'll never get stronger. On biology, old cells die and new cells replace them; new muscular fibers grow and the weakest disappear because the muscle needs more flexible and efficient components to lift the weight. It is no different here. But I think we sometimes forget this thing and we start trying to change accessory things that really don't matter. Why is it? Because of fear and what comes with it. Fear makes you vulnerable, probably with a glimpse of weakness. It usually takes another person to say: "hey! I'm not gonna hurt you, I am here help you to face those fears straightforward". And that's one of the reasons I love your work guys. I wish you keep it up because you give not only practical but also human value. Thank you.

Melinda, I think this is a very common problem to those starting out. A big help to me has been to write out Schedules. First, you want to understand what you're trying to achieve then break it into parts. Give those parts an allowable time to conquer. Then it's helpful to budget for those timelines, your living costs, costs of Chris's kits/courses, books etc.... Now you can see a plan forward in front of you. I'm starting everything from scratch, learning everything pretty from Chris, his kits/courses or the books he recommends. Without a schedule of the path forward, it's terrifying, with a schedule I know where I'm at and how much runway I have left to get to a certain goal. You could just schedule certain things to spend your Saturdays and Sundays doing if you are getting consistent work during the week. To absorb the information I find either doing exercises with the information presented in the book, or use Audiobook. Sit for your Saturday (like a real no friends dork) and take notes throughout the book, skip back 30seconds to rehear what was said when something clicks. Writing gives life to thoughts and helps cement ideas into your brain. These are the things that have been helpful to me.

To Chris' "proving myself to myself": I personally see that as character growth. I have a goal that in my head that I want to reach, a certain standard that I hold myself to and I won't be satisfied until I reach it. I'm not doing this to prove to anyone, because they're (whomever they are) aren't going to benefit from whatever it is I'm trying to prove. I also see "proving myself to myself" in a way about finding the nature of my characteristic. ex: I can think all my life what I would do under a certain crisis, but until I am faced with the reality of that certain crisis, I can't say for sure what I would do. If I deliberately put myself through something, I am trying to prove to myself that I can do the thing that I THINK I would do.
@thefutur7 жыл бұрын
sometimes we think we are "proving something to ourselves" when we're not. after doing some deep therapy sessions, i discovered that the inner voice that you think is your own, turns out, is not. often times, it's the voice of a very demanding parent. when you get to a certain level, you realize that you have nothing to prove to anyone, including yourself. you are. and by existing, you are worthy of love and appreciation. that doesn't mean you stop working on self improvement but this is coming from a different state of mind. my 2 cents
@giullianochacha7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your two cents!! I have a tattoo that says "I AM" in parallel with what you said. I'd like to think that my thoughts are my own. They can be shaped and influenced, surely. Would you say that this creative business we're in, in many ways, is* shaping other's thoughts?

my approach is to take in as much as i can without trying to understand everything - at some point, for me, everything clicks and the chips fall in place. I do think and process what i can understand and dig into, but don't worry about what i don't understand - and still consume more and more of the things i don't understand as well. That works for me
@thefutur7 жыл бұрын
do what works for you! excellent.
@acfosterpost7 жыл бұрын
It all works in phases. The searching and searching and hoarding of information helps you decide where you want to go next. Once you finally figure that out, then it's time to focus, be specific about what information you consume, and most importantly get to WORK.
@melindalivsey17 жыл бұрын
Adam NishMa, nice approach.

Adam Foster, yes! Good summary. Maybe I just don't know where I want to go next.
@martinascolours7 жыл бұрын
OMG! I identify soo much with Melinda! There is so much information out there. You want to consume it all to get a culture of all the things you need to know. And then it just because too much to process and you get lost. And you keep on consuming because you feel like you need to learn more and more but you're really procrastinating on the next step of learning which is practicing what you just learned about. And to sort out all the mess and determine which next thing you should focus on, you got to go back to your day to day problems and figure out what concept will be applicable and helpful at this point in your journey. I'm a total beginner in design. I really have to work on my portfolio and projects to put in there. I need to learn more design. I need to practice, practice, practice. But I haven't got to the point where I enjoy it because I think I'm not good enough. I just have to do the things that scare me. That scare the hell out of me. And "you don't want to get good at the things you're not passionate about because that's what you're going to end up doing " That's the story of my life. Oh God! Thanks for this episode !

Yeah, I find that if you shift your focus to something totally unrelated if you feel burnt out you are still sort of subconsciously applying a filter of what you have tried to learn (if that makes sense) and sometimes you get a kind of reverb effect and glean a new and surprising angle as a result of the mix that you can apply to your process and progression, I think there are lessons in everything though it may not seem that way at the time.

3 things! The first one: Once a new subject appears and I get intrigued by it, in the next few days, information about it stars popping everywhere and I'm not searching for it. My attention just shifts and I star noticing things. It's curious! Second thing: Everyday I get better at "sweeping floors" and job opportunities appear because of it. I might sound ungrateful but everyday I fight and struggle with the thing that allows me to have a living. I keep carrying this beast on my back and everyday I try to pivot it somehow. The third thing: That voice. The most obvious one that I hear in my mind it's saying "you are going to die...". When I have that close to panic feeling, I stop bullshitting. Interesting approach to reading with a purpose. I typically read the entire book with notes in the margins then reread key areas when it fits a purpose.

That's a good method too.

These are great episodes.. I love them! I did get a kick out of the Dr. Phil portion.. haha. Every episode is just packed with so much info. I need a new notebook from all of my notes.

Great Episode again guys, thank you. I like the backpack metaphor, it got me thinking that when you pack a backpack you also have a destination. Before you can get somewhere, you need a direction of travel. Comes back to Chris's earlier point about having clearly defined goals.
@thefutur7 жыл бұрын
you don't always need a destination. you could wander and explore. but you do need essentials in your pack. destination helps or at least a direction to head in.
@melindalivsey17 жыл бұрын
I know having a direction (or some kind of goal) for me will help me know what is essential. Good observation Ben.

Hi Chris one of your last things you said "what voice in your head is saying 'you're not good enough yet.'" This one for me struck quite a chord. When I was in 6th grade there was a teacher who said to me and my folks that I was going to f***ing fail at everything I attempt or do. Yes it was said exactly that way, with the f word, and that level of brutality. So if I had to answer that question, you asked Melinda, it would be that teacher told me I was going to fail. I also believe what that teacher said to me back then has affected me as a web designer and business owner.
@thefutur7 жыл бұрын
now you recognize who that person is. the next question is, do you want to take advice from this person?
@melindalivsey17 жыл бұрын
Awareness is the first step. Great job narrowing down who it was and what message you got. It's not easy to face those things. But once you do, you can start to move past them.
@doctorgrafo78426 жыл бұрын
Melinda ... Something similar has happened to me. And I learned that that inner voice is something that is in me but it's not me. is a good sign that tells you that you are breaking old paradigms and the EGO wonders if it is worth breaking with your old beliefs and is something that the EGO does not want to break because you break the comfort. Greetings from Mexico. Long live the futur team

I agree with the part about the book on Douglas Davis, Creative Strategies, (5:00) reading it and applying that knowledge in real time is somewhat of a challenge on the strategy side with clients. However it's helped in creating a mind shift to approach and evaluate things differently, especially on the marketing side. There are things I have to take with a grain of salt because I'm just not there yet and have to remind myself it's a journey and a learning experience.
@thefutur7 жыл бұрын
beautifully said.

Hi Maece! I totally agree with you. I'm going to take what I can and go from there. And good reminder- it's a journey.
