I loved Sharifs work right off the gate. I thought his vision had cohesion and he executed. The only thing I remember critiquing was the large symbol on the billboard poster. Personally as someone who travels a lot and travels luxury, the Swiss sub brand totally spoke to me. Sean's work was good, and I loved the name AAce. However, the colours were too primary, it was too all american everyday and I didn't feel it emoted luxury to me. The fact that he has no educational background in this in incredibly inspirational however so either way it was a job well done. Great series

Need more content like this. It's educational to see the whole process including mid point critique and to see who takes the feedback on board the most. To be honest, at the start I thought it was obvious who would win, but I was surprised throughout the entire few episodes. The friendly competition and tension adds a lot to this series. Sean's logo was really good and the style scape with the interaction of blue and red was interesting, but Sharif's presentation was just soo amazing, and the logo also worked really well. But instead of tell my personal feeling, i would say, its about who you get as the client, if they think its perfect then, you win that round and that round only, although i would also like to pick Chris' brain as to how he weighted the project, because i think i may have done it differently.
@downo4 жыл бұрын
Sharifs billboard lacked much adherence to design rules. Sean's design works, is consistent and applied correctly. A logo doesn't have to be beautiful to be successful. In fact, the biggest logo's are sort of ugly.

1. This is the first episode I've watched of Young Guns, but after viewing their work from Chris's critique I could tell Sean was going to get it. 2. The way he transformed the original American Airlines logo to such a crisp and innovative look (minus the mini flaws) was brilliant dude, Brilliant. 3. If I hadn't of watched this episode to the end, I never would've thought that Sean was a self-taught designer. I was TOTALLY STOKED! Congrats Sean, You deserve it!

I hope that all the young guns are somewhere doing incredible things. You all were winners just by allowing us to learn through you. Thanks to Sean and Spencer for showing us that even without design education, you can still believe in your work and do great things. Hope Shariff wasn't discouraged. I think his experience and education which were his undoing in that when his and Sean's work was at a level ground or near level ground, Sean would obviously have been chosen because he didn't have the experience and education Shariff had. I hope that in future (lol) there is like a voting system, where all of Futur's team look at the designs and vote as well, and then the final votes tallied.

I really wanted to shout at Chris, when he complimented the metal looking logo mockup for Nest... It's a downloadable mockup. Probably free, too. And it takes 8 seconds to replace the original logo with your logo. It's just a smart object. Also, as most of the people who commented, I think the Swiss branding was stunning. The attention to detail and the overall feel of the whole design was just too good. I know it's been more than 2 years since this video was posted, but I'm just catching up with them. :D I hope Sharif is working in the design field right now with some of the big guys, because he showed great promise.

Arun's reaction was hilarious! I think Sean deserved the win because he had a pretty solid concept going from the start. Sharif did some really awesome work, but I felt like it didn't necessarily have the punch it needed to be like hey look at me and ask the front ticket desk about me when you get there. Overall everyone did really good and I feel the biggest lesson here to take away from everyone is pack all that ammo when going into a critique and really feel comfortable and CONFIDENT in what is being shown. From experience if you don't show up confident and have all your ducks in a row as to what your thought process is for why you did something your just going to be on the ground and out.

@thefuture I was torn between American Airlines and Swiss Air. I think that part of what Chris was looking for was not just the design. But how the designer was going to be like to work with and their conviction in their vision. You have to have this belief in what you are doing but also a flexibility about how you present and how you offer up your work. The American Airlines proposal had a lot of historical considerations built into it. To the point where it showed respect and how it differentiated itself. That is why I think Sean won.

I understand the sentiment people are feeling about Sharif's work as opposed to Sean's.. but it's not about how the applications look or felt in the end (although that's a big part of how the brand presented itself). I felt Sean's direction felt really really in-line with the original brand, but also communicated that "high-end" aspect of the sub-brand. The balance between the elevated feeling of the brand while retaining that strong connection is what really made it work for me.
@seancampbell46485 жыл бұрын
Eric Sin That’s interesting because I actually thought Sharif did a better job at making the visual system look premium and high class than I did. It really goes to show how subjective these things can be.

Sean Campbell You both did amazing! The thing that made me gravitate towards yours in the end was how much it really felt like it was an extension of American Airlines. I think you can go many ways, but for an airline, since it’ll essentially live within the overarching brand of American Airlines, it should feel distinct but familiar. For me, yours hit that mark a little better. I do think it was pretttyyy damn close though. ;)

Loved watching the entire process throughout the young guns series. It makes me wonder one thing though. This is a question for Chris and the futur team. Have you ever given any thought to doing a series for those of us who made a switch late in life to design? I personally spent my entire life drawing and training in the martial arts never once thinking I would become a graphic designer around 35 years old. I am sure there are others like me who have basically learned on the go or on the job how to be designers but could definitely benefit from a series such as this. If it is something you would consider, you name the criteria and I'll meet it. Thanks again for all that you guys do for us on this channel.

When designing a premium experience, is colored visuals and striking images the best way? Because i really think that Sharif did captured the way a premium experience feels like better, when even see the design permeated throughout everything (uniforms, menu, etc) and he did a great job of creating an icon that can be replicated. When it comes to empathy, it's easier when you are really close to the bottle but when you live far away from such experiences like Sharif, it's really amazing how he understood the pain of the customers and delivered a solution. I really think that how young Sean is did play a role on the decision, as we saw Chris mentioning that every time. So if you are young, even by few years, you are really lucky

A logo doesn't have to be beautiful and intriguing to be successful. In fact, the biggest logo's are sort of ugly and boring. Thanks for your comment. I respect your opinion but, I believe in the videos I created (which were then edited down) I explained the situation very clearly without arrogance. I knew this wasn't my best work when submitting it. I knew that when this project came to video, with the critiques, that it wasn't going to be super positive for me and I knew I was going to get some STRONG feedback. But, I didn't sign up to YG to be praised the entire time. I didn't sign up to be the best or put other people down. I joined up to be seen by Chris as a young designer, to be seen as a person who is learning and chasing their dream and I got just that. Negative feedback doesn't scare me, it doesn't worry me, I take it all as a learning experience. During this project, I learnt my limit for juggling workloads, how to understand a brief on a deeper more accurate level, where there are holes in my process and what I should really be focusing on when I design. I have taken all of this on the chin, every word Chris @TheFutur has said to me in person or online. I am very grateful for this chance because in the last year since we started the show, I have grown my business further than I ever imagined. Which, by the way, was one of the founding points of this show to help us grow our skills and businesses so we can charge out into the world feeling more prepared to take on its challenges. I feel like that is exactly what has happened for all of us in the group throughout our time on Young Guns.

Nest is perfect as it is. Chris' triangle idea completely ruins the subtlety of the mark. 'Foreign' typography is ok, since it needs to differentiate and is always accompanied by "by Lufthansa" text. If you'd go with Helvetica anyway, it has to be thin, to ultra thin, to give it that differentiating, exclusive feel. Also, I believe the Lufthansa typography was recently redesigned by HVD -> www.hvdfonts.com/custom-cases/lufthansa
