Thanks for another great video brother. I am not sure why I missed this but I finally made it. I honestly can not explain my love and connection to Mopar and the Hemi. I have owned a few, many I wish I had kept. In the late 70s and early 80s big block cars were cheap and plentiful. Thank you for this history lesson. So much of this was never really talked about unless you were, in the know. I have a old advertisement that I have framed in my shop. We want to thank Ford and Chevy for using the HEMI in their Top Fuel and Funny Cars. Anybody can build a fiberglass body but only Chrysler can build the legendary HEMI engine. Thanks again for another fantastic video. Very well done sir.

Great vid, Ty. Love hearing about the Hemi. Brilliant intro, simply brilliant (everyone hears/feels a Hemi)!! Man, you have some fine footage of the Wing Cars. My dad had a Sublime Bird (440 Mag, pistol grip) in the 70s; it was blindingly fast. (Above 150 mph is a different, rarified, world. I met Garlits and Ronnie Sox in the pit, as a kid, in 1970. this was way better than I was expecting --- That Donavan guy was a genius. That was a major revolution for drag racing. Those factory race cars are so cool but it's really kina cheating when a company builds your car and you just write a check. Also After you grow up and think about it drag racing is kina childish but it's the nature of the human species.
@TheGearheadLounge3 ай бұрын
You are soooo right about the human part! I wish the factories were more involved these days, but the new cars are so much different than race cars compared to back in the 60's and 70's!

Every time I see images and hear stories from early Nascar I get the feeling rules killed development, and fun. Fun story, my grandpa ordered a 67 coronet with the street Hemi but the car never made it to him since it was "damaged at the factory", the dealer offered a replacement fully loaded Coro 500 they had in stock, not a Hemi so my grandpa being a gentleman didn't say no & gave it to my grandma, he got a mustang instead. Not much later he learned the son of the dealer kept it for himself...

He was an avid speed fan, was LT colonel in the Canadian Air force reserve until the 1990's just for the thrills, he passed away in 2008 having just ordered a Skyline GTR but he never got to drive it... Last car he drove was his beloved 350z manual even if it hurt his back like crazy 😂 sad he never got to see stuff like the Hellcat, Mustang GT350 and the new mid engined Z06 vette he would have loved the rebirth of speed...

Another excellent production! Your research is exceptional, and you are a natural story teller. Regardiing OEMs sandbagging their advertised horsepower ratings on some muscle car engines for insurance or other reasons... A reference to check out. Nick's Garage is a KZbin channel run by a baby boomer hot rodder who operates a great shop in Montreal. He has a nice Superflow engine dyno and builds mostly Mopar resto engines. Watch his episode called "The Keeper". He built a stock spec .030" over 426 street Hemi... on the dyno it delivered as advertised 425 HP at 5000 rpm (give or take a percent). What Chrysler did NOT advertise... that stock Hemi produces ~500 HP at 6000 rpm! You will enjoy watching it.

@25:37 from near the rear of the carb base what do those two chrome pipes do? @38:33 on the intake manifold, what is that belt/sprocket driven thing?
@TheGearheadLounge Жыл бұрын
Hey! Thanks for watching! @25:37 are heat riser tubes. They connect to the exhaust manifolds, but not the exhaust itself. They carry heat from the exhaust up to the intake manifold to help warm the engine up faster from a cold start. @38:33 is an electric motor to drive the water pump. This is done on many engine dynos and race cars to eliminate parasitic loss from the crankshaft driving the water pump. This helps increase horsepower numbers.

Would be nice if Graveyard Carz would do an LO23 Hemi Dart instead of 71 Hemi Cudas. Maybe a 69 1/2 A12 Roadrunner. No question, the 71 Cuda is the 59 Les Paul for Mopar, but the factory drag cars are incredibly desireable. I would prefer a streetable clone.

The 1968 LO 23 and Hurst B 29 Darts were story of thier own. They were well known to be faster than a Turbo Porsche. Also, The darys were furnished to buyers WITHOUT a VIN # so that you could not register the car for street use. HAHA, Everyone simply found a cheap or wrecked dart and used that VIN Plate.😅 But those HEMI darts were absolutely 10 second machines. 9 sec. if you super charged.....

Well you Really Gkossed over the main fact in 1965. The banning of the HEMI'S resulted in a HUGE FAN BOYCOTT of NASCAR. It was one of the most major conditions in the history of the sanctioning body. Faced with the MASSIVE Boycott, of fans, the darling France family HAD to allow the HEMI's back into the races. The war between Ford and Mopar was reignited with a vengence. Which the Plymouths mostly won.
