Thanks to Dodge for sponsoring this episode!
The Dodge HEMI is one of the most legendary names in Cars, branded on the sides of the Dodge Charger, Challenger, and Dodge Ram all over the world. But what does Hemi actually mean? Join James as he explores the long history of the hemispherical engine, and how it’s able to make so much power babeh! From the Welch automobile to Chrysler’s plane engine, to the Hemi’s first appearance in cars like the Chrysler Imperial and Plymouth Savoy. It’s the Hemi Like you’ve never seen it. Strap in because James is wearing a sweet Dodge Hellcat sweater in this episode and a sweet Dodge hat! This is the story of the Dodge Hemi engine.
Up to Speed is a weekly automotive history show about the best cars, brands, designers, drivers and influencers ever. Host James Pumphrey covers everything from the Toyota Supra to the Chevy El Camino, The VW GTI to the Subaru WRX. The origins of every car will be uncovered to get you Up to Speed..

I just bought a Ram Big Horn with the 5.7L Hemi, I absolutely love it. It's amazing how that Hemi can move almost 5500lbs like it was a crated up Civic. I love to remote start it when I'm standing behind it, reminds me of the good old days of driving Trans-Am's, the sound is music to my ears.

My 1st brand-new vehicle was a Dodge Dakota Sport w Magnum V-6, faster than all hell, could bury 125MPH Speedo fast. I hope your loving your Ram like I am. The day we got it my wife came home and said she had a Silverado who wanted a lil race, I told my wife I hope you raced, to my surprise my wife says " I kicked his ass" .. I wasn't surprised at the truck, I was surprised my wife raced him.

Growing up my family had a red '05 Durango with the 5.7 HEMI exactly like the one picture at 14:56. I learned to drive in that thing. We towed our travel trailer with the rango when i was younger. Since I was homeschooled we were able to take the camper up and down the entire east cost for weeks at a time while schooling on the road. So many good times riding in the backseat of the durango with the siblings during super long road trips. Once we legit took a month going to Disney world all the way up to Maine (with plenty of stops in between of course...). I never remember that engine struggling with a trailer filled to the brim with a homeschooled families stuff. Great episode, much love from Cincinnati.

3,400rpm on a prop plane in WW2 is actually quite high. Most german planes thrived at 2,500rpm-3,000rpm, whilst Merlin’s could handle 3,000. But a lot of axis engines would have issues above 2,700rpm aside from the one like Jumo 213E. You can only spin a propeller so fast before wit becomes inefficient, resulting in a loss of power or death of the engine.

It's sad when these days the other manufacturers give the smallest engines, you have to buy Chrysler products if you want a sedan, power and looks. Kinda disappointed that they didn't mention the Hemi Pontiacs, after the Firepower was cut Pontiac requested hemi engineers from Chrysler to develop their own and Chrysler sent them over. They ended up developing an SOHC hemi V8 with them, and also built an OHV Hemi V8 with Mickey Thompson which is still alive today in Arizona!! Mickey sold the heads he designed with Pontiac and the hemi Pontiacs dominated all kinds of motorsports.

The first gen hemi was also used in a chrysler powered AIR RAID SIREN!!! They mounted them on top of buildings.
@hunterneitzel3012
@hunterneitzel3012 2 ай бұрын
That Chrysler powered monster made 138 decibels at 100 feet at full throttle, loud enough to cause permanent hearing loss if you were right next to it. Legend say you could hear it go off from 20 miles away. The closest an electric powered siren ever got to that record was 1981, when ACA introduced the penetrator 50, which due to it's heavy chopper, is powered by a 50 horsepower, 480 volt, three phase motor, it not only holds the record for the loudest electric motor powered siren, at 135 decibels at 100 feet, but also the loudest dual tone siren in the world. The Chrysler siren was 6 port single tone, the p50 was 8/12 port dual tone. Unlike the Chrysler sirens, which are practically extinct in service, the p50/rm135/t135ac, are still in active service in relatively large numbers

Everyone complains about challengers not being able to handle. I feel like the big, boxy, heavy, design adds to that old classic muscle feel. I think the scat pack with the 6 speed is the perfect modern MUSCLE car. Big and heavy, lots of power from a big hemi V8. No supercharges or turbos just raw engine roar. Still the same beautiful cruising car. It never was meant to take corners at high speeds and put times on the track. It was built to give you the best muscle car experience.

I still own my new Caddy and love it, but I just pulled the trigger and ordered a 6.4 Hemi Charger WB. I feel like a kid again. There's nothing better than that feeling. Had to get a new one before they gone. I'm not 40 yet, but I miss them 16 to 27 year old glory days - Fearlessly living and breathing, stupid, no care, no worries. Now i do it with a strap on my hip in case their bark is a bit louder and bit crazier. I don't have time for games baby 😆 🙌 Long live the V8 in our mind, body, and soul.

I have a 1953 DeSoto Firedome V8 that I got from my grandfather. My grandfather was not the most technical inclined man. He was messing with the distributor and ignition timing, the motor backfired and the engine caught fire, it then sat in a yard for 17 years. My grandpa still did the best he could to try and still take good care of the car, even after the motor caught fire. He would go outside, rain or shine, and cover/uncover the car, open the doors and compartments, so that it wouldn't mold or rust. My grandpa was hit by a car a few years ago and suffered a brain injury, fast-tracking his demensia. he was no longer able to take care of himself, let alone the car. My grandma didn't much care for the car, she didn't do anything to take care of it like my grandpa did. The car sat in the yard for another 2 years without any care. He was so happy when I asked him if I could have the car, I had never seen his eyes so bright. I got the car when I was 16, when I was 17 we were finally able to get a flat-bed truck to help transport it from my grandpa's house to ours. I'm 18 now and I've been doing everything a can to get her up and running. Just a few weeks ago we got the motor to turn over for the first time. There is still a lot that needs done one the car before its even remotely driveable. there's a lot of things that need cleaned, derusted, demolded, and replaced. I know its going to take a lot of time, and a lot of love, to get her running. But like Donut says, "Cars are pain ❤." And I know that in the end, it will all be worth it to hear that engine start for the first time. My grandpa is in a care home and in his late 80's now, and because of his demensia, he doesn't really remember anything anymore. I know he doesnt remember who I am, I know he doesnt remember the car, but I know how much he loved me, and I know how much he loved that car. My hope, and my dream, is that before I can get our car running and take my grandpa on one last ride before he passes. That would mean so so much to me, and that is my dream. I hope I get the chance to see it come true. That's the story in a nutshell, there's more to it if your interested. Thank you, @DonutMedia for all the hard work you guys do, especially the editors and researchers who make the videos possible. You guys are amazing and It doesnt go unnoticed.
