That clearstream antenna is badass. However, it is not really multi-directional, so if you got two stations in two directions that are in a roughly 180 degree from each other like I do, then two of these facing 180 from each other is necessary.

Thanks for the video. I cut the cord (partially because fast internet from Comcast is still a must-have) and went with: Channelmaster DVR for OTA (no monthly fees) and some internet channels/apps, Sling TV Multi-stream, and 3 Rokus on my 3 TVs. Whole home DVR service is still not available from Channelmaster. Sling TV ($25/mo) is a bargain, since cord-cutting is still saving me tons of money a year. I can also now afford the occasional $6 movie rental online from Sling, Amazon, Netflix, etc. Last month I topped off my man-cave upstairs with a laser video projector from Casio and a portable Epson Duet projection screen. Add the home theater as another way to control the cost of going out to the movies.

So, if you cut the cord, who or what do you use for high speed internet? Since you had FiOS, I'm guessing you had combined/bundled services? Where I live, there really isn't any options other than DSL, sadly, or tethering an LTE smart phone to a Linux box that acts as my internet gateway for my home.
@MikeFuryTech7 жыл бұрын
My question centers around the wire run for the antenna. How did you run the antenna wire from your attic to wherever you ran it to? Do you need a separate antenna for each TV? I have a media room (sports themed) with 3 TVs. Right now that's sort of expensive with dish boxes. Would love to implement this.

Great video and blog. I just bought the Clearstream 4V and although we are able to get all the main channels we want (which we weren't able to before), they are jittery. What is your experience with preamplifiers? Do you think that will help stabilize the signal? We are going to try placing the antenna higher than it currently is, but I'm wondering if an amp would help.
@TheGeekPub8 жыл бұрын
Garbage in garbage out. If your signal is bad, you'll just amplify bad. Amplifiers are great for splitting an already good signal to multiple TVs or long distance cable runs.

I know this video is a bit old, but the solution I came up with was to use tv tuners (mine are hauppauge 2250's), in a server and stream the content to each TV via PC. My backend (and frontend) software is mediaportal. If you would rather go the linux route (on the frontend) you can use KODI, just grab the free kodi pvr mediaportal plugin (for the mediaportal server) and it'll work great! Even ran well on a raspberry pi (1 and 2) using the openelec build. If you want to build it all linux you can opt for mythtv, but I couldn't give any details on how to use it, or if it's any good, as I've never installed it. I have been using mediaportal for roughly 7 years now and it can do everything a standard DVR can do (fast forward, rewind, pause, etc..) along with a host of other cool things. To add to this, I haven't entirely cut the cord as I also run a Ceton InfiniTV 6 PCIe cablecard device which allows you to record up to 6 cable channels at a time (just get the cable card for a TIVO from your cable company), but I'm leaning toward dumping cable, and opting for something like Playstation Vue. As it stands now, I can stream/record a combination of 10 channels. There are additional awesome features that you should check out if you ever find yourself looking for a fun project, and Needless to say, for me, this one has gone from, "let's check this out" to "everyday production" in my home. All the software is free (exception being windows OS licenses), so there isn't a reason not to give it a try if you already have tuners (USB and ethernet tuners work too). For hardware, my "server" is just an old dell 390 I picked up from work for free, and I threw a copy of windows 10 on it (yes it's legal), so the requirements aren't super high. One note on the hard drive for active recording and watching, I use an SSD for video, because spin drives couldn't handle more than 4 channels recording at a time, while one person was watching. I wrote a script to copy the data off the SSD to my network storage, and update the sql database (sql express) to reflect the new file location, and remove old files from the SSD to prevent it from filling up (just a 250 GB SSD). Yes that part sounds complicated, and while it helps to have a working knowledge of the pieces, it can be learned, and there are plenty of resources for people wanting to attempt it. Clients consist of small Zotac ZBOX CI323 nano PC's running windows 10 (yes, legally licensed) at each TV. I had a couple raspberry pi's running the front end for about a year, and while they were good, kodi doesn't give you all the integrated features that mediaportal does. the one thing I really like about the system is that video content is delivered over the network, without needing to have a tuner card on each device; even multiple wifi devices didn't have any issues. Each device accesses the server, so beyond changing the skin/theme, you can expect the same experience no matter where you are. This ended up being a lot longer than I expected. TL;DR Check out Mediaportal as an awesome cord-cutting option.

Frontier is my only option.
@jeffmiller11407 жыл бұрын
And so, Frontier wins again. We have Frontier (without FIOS) here. And the big dog is Comcast, which I have. Frontier, since purchasing our severely aged Verizon copper lines, has done nothing more than "baling wire and duct taped" the aging POTS lines. Comcast has taken advantage of their market domination, doubling their prices, and making sure their own services don't compete with one another. I just had gig internet (1 gig down, and a paltry 35 meg up) installed. I'm thinking of dumping the TV and phone services in my package, and going to a setup similar to yours. It would have been nice, and I believe more effective, if there was another affordable internet option. These large monopolies have you by the short hairs!!

"Cutting the cord" is NOT expensive. I spent $685 for EVERYTHING I needed; a one-time-expense: 1. large outdoor antenna = $200 2. pre-amp - $65 3. 100' coax = $20 4. powered 4-way splitter = $35 5. 4-channel DVR - $230 6. 2 high-speed desktop switches = $30 7. 3 4K Fire Sticks = $75 7. extra 9' mast = $30 My cable TV bill was about $130/mo. I have added PHILO TV app to add the balance of channels I want @$20/mo. So, after less than 7 months, I'm saving $110 a month. So, I just put all of the items on a separate credit card and paid $110 a month on that card. It was a new card, so I had no interest for the first 6 months. That's NOT expensive. That IS a GREAT savings. Just saying...

what about satellite tv?

Just because the cord is virtual changes nothing. It costs too much for what you get.

You should taken frontier to small claims court.

Not worth my time really. But it would have at least been fun.

Don't forget Tablo or Simple TV

So surprised there aren't more tablo comments. They have a 2 and 4 tuner version (allowing multiple recordings at once) as well as ability to stream to mobile devices, etc even when away from home. Its far better than the cable company's dvr service. I have never once regretted cutting the cord!

Yeah, Frontier sucks, for so many reasons. Cutting the cord, & returning to broadcast TV, when it's an option, is definitely the way to go. Now to find a reliable ISP is the next hurtle.

that makes me glad that we don't have to deal with any of that here

How can you save on your internet? I cut all cable I have an hd antenna I stream with amazon fire stick I called my at&t unverse provider and the will not sell me unlimited internet service alone without a bundle package so my cord is cut but they have me by my nut sack because I have to pay them for internet service so it looks like you can't cut the cord completely

Where is this? I've never seen a metered uverse account.

I have to pay AT&T in so. Louisiana for cable only, but I can't afford to buy my own equipment, so I'm stuck. When I dropped tv they upped my internet to $70/mo.

I am interested in cutting the cord too. How do deal with the news channels like MSNBC, Fox, and CNN?
@TheGeekPub7 жыл бұрын
DirecTV Now or SlingTV. Either offer those channels streaming.

If you want to cut the cord go with Silicon Dust's HD Home Run products www.silicondust.com/hdhomerun/. They work fantastic, the DVR feature is really nice its $30 a year so not to bad. And point the files to your PLEX server and you can watch any recorded programming from anywhere.

instead of paying for episodes you should look into KODI it's great!! I'm a cord cutter, i dropped Directv, went with antenna and use Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime and even subscribed to Playstation Vue... $60 a month now instead of $250. I haven't missed satellite at all
