PLEASE NOTE: From January 2016, we have moved. We are now here…
/ @thatpedalshow
Please subscribe to the That Pedal Show dedicated channel.
In this episode, Daniel and Mick get their rock on. And we warn you, this video is long and contains lots of very average rock guitar playing!
But, with the new EVH5150 Overdrive just released, we thought you might like to hear it alongside its stiffest competition in the name of…
• Wampler Pinnacle Deluxe
• JHS Angry Charlie
• JHS AT
• Xotic SL Drive
• Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive
Massive thanks to Simon Dickenson for lending us 'Shelley', his Charvel San Dimas Style 1HH and also to Luke Burley who entrusted us with his Washburn N4 and Ibanez AT10.
Amps today are a Hughes & Kettner Puretone and a reboxed Marshall JTM45.
Mick will continue this description later, as he's running for a train! (Talk about planning, eh Mick?)
As ever, all effects and amp routing and switching is handled effortlessly by TheGigRig G2.
Enjoy this video, and sorry to all the good rock players out there!

Thanks! Helps a lot to cut the excess chat and dig straight into the audio files! TPS has good stuff, those brits know their trade. Too bad they talk and goof off too much for my taste! Don't see the value of straying from topic, cracking private jokes, and excess noodling. Scott's JHS pedals YT channel is way better to learn and understand fx pedals, I think.

It took pedal makers that long to figure out how to make the "amp in a box" sound good. And yeah BluesLawyer, EVH may have gotten his sound from a modded $5,000 amp, but my entire goddamn rig costs less than $1,500, so these pedals are where I would get that kind of sound.

Have found it one of the few pedals that stacks well with my EP booster - which I think is my favourite pedal ever - with my Les Paul and Marshall vintage modern set up. GREAT episode. To my ears, the two best pedals were the Pinnacle and the Angry Charlie in that order. The 5150 seems, to me, like it's missing something. Of course, you really do need to be in the room to hear it, because the KZbin/Internet/Computer conversion thing steals away quite a bit of the sound, but you guys do as good a job as any. One thing was for sure, though - every pedal sounded better through the Marshall, which isn't surprising. I've played through H&K amps many times and to me they sound like solid state amps.

Eat 'Em Smile was actually a modded Marshall that Steve Vai borrowed from Steve Stevens, he was trying to get the tone happening, and as you might imagine, was struggling to do so with the Carvin, so then Stevens sent his Lee Jackson modded amplifiers over. -A kid who cares way too much about 80s shred guitar tones.... haha

Why does that 'very special' period of guitar playing always garner chuckles from KZbin jockeys. I don't see musical instrument & accessory companies going to the wall to capture that classic 90s sound. When is Wampler going to make pedal that captures a true Oasis tone.

Been chasing Ed's tone since 78. Today, like they say , get a super clean amp in my case 2 Fender Blues Deluxe in stereo and a pricey $300 Radial Plexitube pedal which actually has a tube. The opening 7 chords in, Somebody get me a Doctor, is exactly the tone. Closest to a Marshall thats been on for hours and the tubes are glowing. For a much less expensive alternative at under $100, the CMATMODS Brownie is a very close second.

THE PINNACLE - is just that but here are some insights into this gem which I've been using for about 7 yrs now. The older version is voiced a little differently than the newer version; i.e. older is more JTM/JMP sounding - newer more JCM. Where both SHINE is how well it cleans up when you roll your guitar volume back. This is IMHO the acid test with any dist pedal because most high $ dist pedals sound great with your guitar volume cranked but thin, tinny and tinsely when you roll your guitar volume back. This is where the Pinnacle shines - it actually mimics the same dynamic as when you dime a JTM/JMP/JCM when you roll your guitar volume back. You don't lose anywhere near the bottom and body of sound as with just about any other dist pedal. Brian Wampler designed the Pinnacle to be more interactive with your playing which is why he also built a certain amount of sag into it. The newer version actually has an on and off sag button on it which can be adjusted from inside the pedal. Also, the newer version of the Pinnacle Deluxe's boost function can be used independently from the dist - you can bypass the dist and use it as a boost - not helpful if you use your boost pedal in the effects loop but great if you use it in front of the preamp.

How are the voicing different
@GTX1123
@GTX1123 3 жыл бұрын
@@bokchoiboi9016 Marshall JTM & JMP 50 Watt amps are darker and have more a pronounced mid range. Most classic hard rock guitarists from the 70's used them. Marshall JCM's are brighter with less pronounced mids and have slightly more gain. 80's metal bands were all using JCM Marshalls.

@@bokchoiboi9016 Yes. The older Pinnacle is a bit more like a JTM / JMP whereas the newer one more like a JCM. Both are tweekable but I'm really hooked on the older one. What they were doing around the 17:20 mark is usually what you end up doing when you have a lot of pedals. Or heads,guitars... You have a permanent tone in your head. When you get a pedal you adjust it till you hopefully hit it. Then you get another pedal and do the same. Eventually you end up with a nice colorful board full of pedals and pretty lights and they all sound about the same. With Teles,Strats,Les Pauls.Marshalls,Fenders, whatever.. You always gravitate towards that " inner tone" and take the treble out,put bass in,gain here,less there. Fun as hell but eventually you end up with one guitar and one cord plugged straight into one head.

Hey dudes. Ed VH was my friend. I loved that “Mofo”, which is what I used to call him. Or “Ed Van Heineken”, JK. Dan, you’ve got the story kinda correct about his Amp. But here’s what he actually did. He had a Marshall 100WATT head from UK. So he HAD to Dime all the knobs just to hear it but he couldn’t figure out why. It was the 1970’s, he was a kid. So, he didn’t go the route of a converter. “The Brown Sound” was not a Blackout. It was almost a Brownout. So that’s the level he pushed his Amp with a Variac and experimented with voltage to find what sounded best to him. Then you’re right about a dimmer. He had some weird box that took the output of the Marshall and Amplified it into a Solid State H&H power Amp. I may have a photo of the box. But suffice to say, Alex plays LOUDLY on drums. Ed turned it all the way up on every knob then he’d adjust everything using UK type voltage after he began to hear it. Then he had somebody build him that box to make it even louder. The way he “crash tested” his 5150 Amps over here in Corona at Fender, 20 miles) he put 15 heads up. Then 30 speaker cabs at least that’s what I saw. Then Ed starts being Ed on the guitar until he’s satisfied, then he lays down his guitar and it’s still as loud as when he was playing and it’s feeding back. Shuts the door. “Don’t you want us to switch that off? You’re not finished?” Ed goes “Nah, that’s how I crash test my gear. If it they’re still running in a month then they have a decent chance of surviving my tour.”! So they lock up and Ed goes leave it. See you in a month. I was told he did that 3x before he said OK! ❤R.I.P.❤ He was the kindest dude and like me, he wore his heart on his sleeve. So to speak. Everyone who spent time with him was privileged to get to spend that time and knowing Ed is loving Ed. I met him in 1989. At G.I.T. With Holdsworth. Lots of people don’t know. Alan would not likely have had a record deal at all if Ed hadn’t really pushed for him! They were together that day. So I grabbed Ed. Made him teach me something I was working on. Blessed! Thomas Adams 11:11🙏🏼🎸🎶🎶😉✌🏼 Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2023 coming soon! Let this year be Free of Assholes and Oligarchs. 🎉😊

The Wampler into the JTM 45 really nails the early VH records. But the MXR can nail the early VH and the more aggressive Van Hagar tones. The both cost the same too. The SD1 that Steve Vai uses is a Keely modded version that sounds completely different, much bigger bottom and midrange. The AT Angry Charlie surprised me, very big sounding. But MXR really did a great job, it has so much adjustability that it will get a big variety of tones. Wait until you get a Friedman BE-OD.

I knew a few guys who tried the light dimmer wired into the power cord. One of them got knocked on his ass at a show, he said the amp smoked just before he got knocked out. I got my Lee Jackson Modded Marshall in '80. It still sounds great. He used good components and construction. It's survived 35 yrs. It's Still my go-to amp for when I want that tone.

I like that you preface this by saying you're not the most qualified to shred, Dan killed it! And it looked like as much fun for you two as it was for us.

hey I just wanted to let you guys know that the original distortion sound that Eddie used to record the solo for Michael Jackson's "Beat it", is not what ended up as a final recorded sound for the album. According to Steve Lukather, Quincy Jones had stated that he thought that Ed's guitar sounded "too tough", so they had Steve reduce the distortion sound on his solo track after it was recorded.

This comes from an interview with some guys that worked at the studio where they recorded MJ's "Beat It" but they said that EVH's solo was on the studio's Dumble ODS.

Great comparisons. Love the AT. The think that impressed me most was how smooth and noise free the switching was on the G2.

I was 14 (1977) when I heard Eruption and argued with friends for months that it was keyboard (it was that original). Great to hear guys that can't really play this kind of music giving it a go as it sounds like me for the last 30 years so a much better review for that fact. Thanks guys.
