This is why Kallus is my favorite caracter of Rebels. He's not just a bad guy, he truly think that what he do is right and this is also why "Honorable Ones" and "Throug imperial eyes" are my favorites episodes, when he realise that he's wrong and also want some friends. This remember me a very intense scene of the season 1 when Tarkin ask to the great inquisitor to kill two officers. Even if he was a bad guy Kallus was shocked ! I think it's the first time he realised that the Empire was going to far. I'm so happy that he had a so good redemption and that he go to live with Zeb and the Lassats. ^^

And I love this character, I just want him to aknowledge how messed up the people serving the Empire get when they can rejoice in the killing of loyal friends just to mess with their enemies. I like to think that scene, while on short term a victory for him, haunted him later, since he hated to see loyal imperials get killed, and although Tua effectively defected, he knew her loyalties, and could easily figure out what drove her over the edge.

I love how Kallus and Ezra make up a plan as they go and think they got away with it, until it is revealed that Thrawn has now figured out that Kallus is Valcrum. I love how Rebels had forgiveness as a recurring theme. Kanan has to forgive the clones for killing his master and himself for running away, instead of helping her. Hera has to forgive her father for choosing Ryloth over the whole rebelion. Sabine has to forgive her family for chosing the empire over her and herself for creating that weapon. Zeb has to forgive Kallus for taking part in killing all Lasat on Lasan and himself for beeing the only survivor. Ezra constantly forgives people, that did him wrong and is willing to trust people like Maul, Hondo, Azmorigan or the purrgil.

^^^ He has one of the most interesting arcs in Star Wars canon imo… Outside of Jedi/Sith stories we really don’t get to see any point of views other than the rebellions’ throughout SW. I think it’s easy to get enthralled with this world full of mysticism, and of course that’s the point, the myth is behind the force and the Jedi and the Sith are key parts of the stories. But I also think Star Wars serves as an interesting insight into humanity (and of course by that I mean humans and all the other species alike) and looking at the world of Star Wars from the eyes of people without strong connections to the force is extremely interesting; after all, they’re the majority of the population! I really wish we could’ve seen a lot more from Kallus’ point of view after he defected, especially after how flushed out (and badass lol) his final defection was.

I agree that the Kallus redemption is important. But not because one redemption is better than another. Kallus represents probably the majority of Empire forces. He thinks they're the good guys, and eventually learns their true evil. It is easy to view all people serving the Empire as disposable and one dimensional. Kallus shows people just trying to serve the greater good.

It's also very telling that once he is no longer an enemy, he ceases to have a large impact on the story. He went from being a decently high-ranking Imperial who commanded star destroyers and could order men to their deaths, to being just one of the crew. He was included in briefing and strategy sessions most weren't privy to, sure, but the show didn't make him a key player anymore. His atonement was through humble service, serving as councilor and fighter when needed, like a Jedi. I would've liked to see his relationship with Zeb develop more after he defected, but the fact that a few short years earned Zeb's trust enough to bring him to Lira San is a testament to how hard Kallus worked to do good and how willing the Rebellion was to accept goodness and let go of their grudges.

One small detail you can see from his and zeb’s episode to his reveal as fulcrum, is that he’s trying to make his fellow imperials lighten up. Kallus believed that the empire was necessary to create order but he realizes that the order they want to make is absolutely wrong so he tries to change that first.
@danaroth598 Жыл бұрын
One of the things I like about how Kallus was handled is how economical yet complete the writing is. With just a few episodes where he's a focus character and a handful of other scenes you come away with a very believable and grounded redemption story. The writers had faith that viewers didn't need to have him over-explained, while also not being obnoxiously vague. I want more Kallus not because I have a lot of unanswered questions, but just because I like the character! Kallus did terrible things from a place of fear and ignorance --> he justifies it to himself and convinces himself the Empire is fair and orderly --> he gets forced by circumstances to reconsider his actions and the Empire's --> he doesn't like what he sees --> he takes responsibility and works to atone --> the people he hurt see his sincere atonement and he earns their forgiveness. It's driven almost entirely by his own decisions, which IMO is far more satisfying and believable (and a much better moral lesson) than redemption arcs where another character has to do most of the work to convince the person they're in the wrong.

THANK YOU! This whole character arc was superb. I admit it, I fly for the Empire and have been a Boots On The Ground Old Fan since '77, (so, yes, I'm old. Doesn't stop me from putting on a flight suit.) and I'm proud to say that several of the "Clone Wars" and "Rebels" crew are good friends, but YOU just nailed one of the most fantastic turnabouts I have ever seen. I loved Kallus as an ISB Agent, and loved him more as a Rebel. The end of this episode was utterly in your face, Zeb is welcomed with relief and love back to The Ghost, Kallus gets a quick nod from Constantine and enters his quarters devoid of any family, friends or decorations -- except for one small rock. And then they handled his transition to Fulcrum and his escape to the Rebels with some great writing. He is right up there with that moment when Rex loses it and goes off on the "WHEN did WE become the BAD GUYS?!" speech. Exactly. I'm convinced the Rogue One Rebels were largely recruited from Fulcrum. Former Imperials who would know protocol like the back of their hand, and oh, those hands have been dirty and still are. I think it's even more backed by the opportunity the two crews had to weave the stories together, to hear "General Syndulla" paged in the hangar and to see Chopper go whizzing by and the Ghost at the battle of Scarif. Kallus fits there. He's a man who first and foremost has ironclad morals. He's a spectacular officer. And he sees the writing on the wall. He simply became my favorite character, long before "The Honorable Ones" and I am so proud to be able to sit around with a great group of friends who made this happen (and yes they give me cr*p about it, and I happily give it back) Agent Kallus/Captain Alexsnder is a great character, a man who doesn't find redemption, he makes it on his own. (oh, and we need more loth-cats)

I love your observation that past redemption stories in Star Wars haven't really tackled the theme of forgiveness. I've never thought of that, but you're absolutely correct. It's weird to say, but Kallus' arc is easily the most realistic and well told redemptive arc in Star Wars. However, I would argue that Kylo Ren's arc is actually about forgiveness as well, just in a a different way. His turn to the light is all about him learning to forgive himself, and to realize that he's already been forgiven in the eyes of those who love him. That's what that scene between him and Han in TROS is all about. It's not as realistic a depiction of redemption as Kallus' arc is, since Ben Solo truly did nothing to earn that forgiveness, but it is in keeping with the themes of family and the unbreakable bond that it represents that run throughout the Star Wars saga. It's also in keeping with the themes of empathy that run throughout the sequel trilogy, which I believe you discussed in another video.

I feel like his arc should have been fleshed out more. While "The Honorable Ones" does a good job of showing Kallus what's missing from his life with the Empire, his change from Imperial Agent who gloated to Zeb to his face about how he wiped out his people to Rebel Spy was way too quick IMO. I know they try to immediately make him less vile by him admitting he overexaggerated his role in the Lasaat genocide, but it just kind of feels like a cop-out. I would have maybe had one or two more episodes featuring him to show his inner conflict more before revealing the new Fulcrum. A couple of episodes in season 4 where he plays a bigger role would have been welcome too. I legit didn't recognise him when he turned up in some episodes because he was kind of a supporting/background role by that point.

He is one of my favourite SW characters. Comparison to Zuko is so good! I think you could argue that Vader and Kylo's redemption was motivated by family ties as opposed to them truly realising their actions have been evil. Especially within the context of just the movies. But Kallus has the courage to admit to himself he misjudged Zeb, and then allowed himself to question just how much he had misjudged the rebels, the empire, and everything he knew to be true. Then he doesn't just decide to run away from the empire, but he decided to do something about it and puts everything on the line for the rebellion. I also love that his story reflects what we can imagine is a great handful of imperial agents/workers turned rebels. I think it also comments so well on how brain washed someone can become by authoritarian states. Vader and Kylo were consumed by grief or manipulated at a young a vulnerable age. But Kallus would been very young toward the end of the clone wars and been really indoctrinated into the empires ideology. So to see him question himself and break away from that is a very powerful story in SW I think.

People say Vader's redemption is one of the best in cinematic history? I'm not sure... it's kind of simplistic. The moment didn't feel forced, but there still wasn't much conflict in Vader until that final scene.

@@thegoldman25 Kylo kinda feels like an upgrade from Vader in that regard, that conflict defines his character for the whole triology. Meanwhile, the concept of Vader maybe having some good in him doesn't exist until late into the third film. Almost like those movies weren't planned or something...

My biggest gripe with Kallus' redemption is that we barely get any of Good Kallus in Season 4. I'm not a big fan of the Lothal stuff in Season 4 in general and I would've much prefered to have a story with Rex and Kallus, two characters with interesting histories with the Empire, in between the main boring plot stuff.

Oh, absolutely the best redemption in Star Wars. That time spent with Zeb stranded on that ice moon was a real eye-opening experience for him. At the end of that episode, I knew he was eventually going to defect from the Empire and join the rebellion.

The scene of Kallus returning to dark, empty bunk in the Empire is echoed (yes pun intended) in The Bad Batch where Crosshair also does the same during his long journey out of following the Empire's orders.

Even though i think disney plays too safe with rebels making it too kid friendly. Even more so than george. Rebels has some good writing through its main characters, especially kallus. I was rooting for him to switch sides. Ever since he and zeb got stuck on that ice planet. I hope we also see kallus in live action but it wouldnt be the same without the voice actor. His voice matters alot

He was a man of honor, who came to realize his masters were not, and acted accordingly. I love this character. Danny from MI-5 would approve, as well, methinks!

Hot take: Vader's redemption really wasn't done all that well. It was hastily shoehorned into Return of the Jedi at the last minute when George Lucas decided he wanted this to be a story about family or something. I mean, it's nice and all, but, like with Ben Solo's arc, it needed to be set up better. Instead, In Return of the Jedi, Vader just all of the sudden has doubts about this whole space Nazi thing he signed up for.

Ben solo doesn’t have a ark he’s bad then he’s good. Vader began as a slave on a desert planet, then he became a slave to warrior monks, then he became a slave to Palpatine but at the very end he saw an opportunity to atone for all his sins by saving his son and all of the rebels. When Luke found out Vader was his father his entire narrative was to prove their was still light in Anakin because of the force Luke could sense the conflict within him. Anakin never wanted things to go the way they did he never wanted to be Palpatine’s pawn we know this because his plan was to overthrow Palpatine and rule the galaxy with Padmé but Obi wan took all of that away from him. His prosthetics were replaced with robotic ones this is so if Anakin were to ever challenge Palpatine he wouldn’t be much of a threat because he’s weak to force lightning now. In the end he realized he became what he sought out to destroy so he sacrificed himself but not as a slave as a “free man”.

@@UCU_BT That's all from the prequels, and it adds to his character, but his whole redemption as Darth Vader needs to stand on its own.
@calebmurphy94063 жыл бұрын
@@UCU_BT I appreciate that you're able to see all of that in Vader's story, but I think that's mostly stuff you've added in your head. I mean, first of all, you're retroactively applying Anakin's story in the prequels as a part of Vader's story in the originals. I'm just talking about the originals as they stand on their own. Second of all, nothing that you said really explains how Vader's arc was well told. You just sort of gave me your interpretation of what you think his internal conflict was, which is fine, but it's not really what I'm talking about. The fact of the matter is that Vader was straight up evil in the first two movies, and then randomly in Jedi he's like "No, son, it's too late for me. I must obey my master." when he previously should no signs of remorse for his evilness. Things are left a little uncertain at the end of Empire, but I don't think it was a strong enough set-up for the 180 degree turn we got in Jedi.
