I really love my best friend, but her boyfriend is always really mean to me. I've told her about it, & he's apologized, but nothing has really changed. He's also ALWAYS there when we hang out. I've asked her if it can just be us, but I feel like she's constantly putting him before me. I'm not saying she has to put me before him 100% of the time, but our friendship is important too...

I think of it this way: my friend will learn the lessons that he/she's supposed to learn from dating the person. They're entitled to their own story and journey, no matter how I feel. It doesn't mean I won't share concerns, but ultimately, I give my friend the power to choose for his/her own life. Liberating!

I think this situation is so hard because all you want to do is shake your friend and say "you deserve better!" "he is all wrong for you!" "trust me!". I have been in this situation a few times including currently and I struggle with it every time. Friendship is so precious and fragile, I just don't want it to break! The worst part is when your best friend doesn't see the unhealthiness & red flags that you see, no matter how obvious is it. It's so hard to walk the line of saying nothing at all & saving your friendship, or putting your friendship on the line to save your friend. That is if your friend even decides to listen to you, which mine doesn't! So scary....

You know, I've been there. There was this one girl in my group of friends who had been with the same guy for 4 years. Everything seemed ok, but then we started noticing that she was very stressed by their relationship and when she was with him she was a completely different person. With us she was funny and she was always smiling. With him she was always serious and almost sad. So we decided to talk to her, just because we were concerned for her. She took a break from his boyfriend...and finally she decided he wasn't the one. Talking is the bast thing to do! :)

Whenever I've encountered this, I always remind myself of what is most important: if my friend is happy with whomever they're with, then I am happy for them! You don't always have to like all your significant others' friends either. Just be supportive and communicate.

Andrea Garcia ... ok . Maybe she already knows what her boyfriends are like (eg she might know one just wanted to have sex with her) but doesnt want to accept it. If you pretty certain that she doesnt know then be supportive and maybe let her find out for herself what her boyfriends are like.

RikkeTakera1 Sadly many people forget about friends when they start dating someone, and then when and if the relationship is over, they come back. You can mention it to talk about it or you can just accept it and let them lose a good friend. It's life. Many of my friends have done that

I think when some people are in relationships, they don't even realise that their friends feel this way. Make sure you tell them how much you value your friendship, and you don't want any relationship to take that away. If they don't agree to catch up with you at all, they're not worth your time. As hard as it is, you may need to walk away. After all, you don't want to waste your time putting in so much effort for people who won't appreciate it x

My best friend's past SO was pretty awful to her. She would tell me all kinds of juvenile and cruel things he would do to her (muting her on the phone so he didn't have to have a conversation, laughing about how needy she was in front of his friends, posting about her on social media about how he didn't like her all that much), and these were two people above the age of 18. I was there for her through everything, but I also never really kept my mouth shut that I openly disliked him. Though I did tell my friend that, I also told her that it was always her choice if she wanted to keep trying in this relationship. Eventually they did break up (after she came to me upset and needing advice on if she should), but now she's with someone so much better and who treats her like royalty. All in all, I think disliking a friend's SO, especially if that friend is like a sibling to you and you're extremely close- always be honest. I never hid that I disliked her SO, but I also let her know time and time again that I was always there for her no matter what her decisions were. You have to be loving and supportive, while also giving them a critical look from someone outside the relationship.

This video was actually posted at the most amazing time ever 😂😂 I've been best friends with my friend for 6 years now, and she has this new boyfriend. She is constantly complaining to me about this boy, yet she refuses to break up with him. She's asked for my advice numerous times now, but whatever I say doesn't seem to matter. He recently cheated on her, and she found out from the girl he cheated with. She felt really guilty about it and decided to tell my friend. When my friend asked this guy about it, he didn't deny it. They broke up for about 10 hours. Then he decided to say he didn't do it. Which is a lie because he said he did in the beginning. She took him back and is mad at me for saying he is a jerk and it's not a good idea. I really don't want to see her hurt... She's my best friend and I love her. I don't know what to do.

It's always such a delicate situation! My rule of thumb is that as long as there's nothing serious going on, like abuse, I just choose to be happy for my friend. We can't all get along perfectly with everyone. But if my friend is happy with their SO, it would be really selfish of me to want to take that away from them.

I think there's no need to try to know more about my best friend's BF if I don't like him as he's not my boyfriend, and I'm be friend with my friend, not him. As long as my friend loves him, it's alright, I will be okay and won't let my friend feel trapped in the middle cos I never tell her I hate her BF, just keep it as a secret and it will be fine. I won't meet them everyday also, I will enjoy my time being with my friend but if she takes her BF along, then I will suppress my feeling and pretend like nothing's different.

I've been in a situation where I knew somebody was not a good significant other for my friend. He had cheated on her numerous times and their relationship was just a vicious cycle. It was hard for them to get distance from each other because we went to a relatively small university. As hard as it was to witness the on-again-off-again relationship, I tried to be cordial to her significant other and I did not confront my friend about her decision to "go back" to him. She knew that many of her friends did not approve of him, but I could see that their hostility towards him was isolating her and making her less willing to share things with her friends. She sort of resorted to sneaking around with him, not wanting to tell people when he would be coming over or when she would be going over to his house. In general, if you want somebody to feel comfortable with you as their best friend, you cannot be judgmental. You don't have to support or encourage the relationship, just encourage and support YOUR FRIEND. If things don't work out, they will trust you enough to come seek your help and support when they'll need it the most.

Something I try to ask the friend is if they're still happy in the relationship. And if they say that they aren't or they're not sure, I try to encourage them to talk to their significant other. And make sure that they know that it is completely okay to end the relationship if neither of them are happy anymore, or start to see it as not so healthy. Then the best thing I think you can do after that is let them know that, they have your full support & that you will always be there for them no matter what.

I think unless there's a SERIOUS issue, you should never talk bad about a friends significant other. It'll push your friend away! And also, if they're spending more time with your significant other, don't complain about being pushed aside and be understanding and HAPPY because your friend is happy :) good friends are supportive in my opinion

I've been there before. My friend was dating a girl for over 5 years who none of us really got along with. We all made the effort to get to know her but she never put any effort into getting to know us. She was very controlling and mean to him and we never understood why he put up with it. We approached him about it a few times a few years in because he didn't deserve to be treated so poorly. They would break up and get back together every few months and we would all just hope it would end. Finally, about 6 months ago they called it quits and he's never been happier.

im in this current situation where my friends boyfriend hasn't exactly been the best boyfriend to her and they've broken up and gotten back together multiple times, this last one however was really bad and i was hoping they would not get back together, but unfortunately they did and now my friend and i are no longer talking because i expressed my feelings of them getting back together and she got really upset and said something to me that i did not appreciate. That's true, but if they respect you as a friend, they shouldn't mind hearing your opinion. They don't need to follow it, because it's their life, but they should at least hear you out. It's always good to view another perspective, because your friend mightn't have thought about it previously and perhaps, the new knowledge could actually help them make the best decision for themselves.

iflymilly I think an opinion about someone else's significant other should be given only if they ask for it. Plus I dont think any mature individual will look for validation about their relationship choices. It is downright immature and insensitive to bring it up without prompt and say "hey i hate/dont like your bf/gf". hate is actually a strong word. Not everyone is gonna get along well, but everyone can be human and is in no position what so ever to decide what is best for another person, even though they are your best friend/partner/soulmate

My younger sister was dating this guy (who asked me out first, but I turned him down) for 3.5 years and they just broke up. I only realized afterward that I liked him as a person, but I didn't like him as my sister's boyfriend. I am very happy that he dumped her (because she deserves so much better) but I also wish I had been a bit more civil/friendly/supportive during her 3 year relationship. TheGridMonster I loved this video and it's EXTREMELY relevant because I literally just dealt with this . I ended up getting to know my best friend's significant other and we ended up being really good friends... But then it backfired. My best friend got very suspicious of us being "too close"and wanted me to stop hanging/talking to him. In this case, it ended up pretty crappy- but that doesn't mean everyone else's experience won't be better lol

One of my closest friends has a HORRIBLE boyfriend. I think maybe they're both not good for each other. After a year and a half of dating he told her she wasn't loving, that she didn't spend all of her free time with him, she didn't need her friends... and a bunch of other crap. She hung up the skype call and almost had a shave your head moment. She cracked. He freaked out that she was going to break up with him and tried non-stop to get a hold of her. I told her it didn't sound like a healthy relationship and she should dump him after she told me. Well that wasn't what she wanted to hear and stopped talking to me for 10 months. We're talking again but things aren't what they use to be between us. That's ok for now, whatever it is she needs to learn from this will work it's self out in time.

Sky Pelham I was almost put in that position, except instead of trying to understand, my best friend just ended up putting me underground and talking down to me, and then she just let go of the friendship. She hurt me and even though my boyfriend isn't perfect, all he wants is for me to be happy, and I am happy with him. Sorry to unload, but this video just really hit home for me and I needed to vent.

I say that as a friend who's friend is dating a not so delightful person, you should respect their relationship first and foremost. Just be there for your friend. Don't patronize your friend or ask them any "Sherlockesque" questions about their relationship. She/he will only realize that said person is not right for them in time.

It's definitely a tough situation. A lot of the times I don't like my friend's significant other because of what my friend has told me. So the only things I have to go by are the negatives things my friend has said. Other times, I have tried to get to know the significant other and they don't make an effort. I usually let my friend talk to me about their bf/gf and keep my mouth closed, but after a certain point I say my opinion a couple times, and after that, I keep my mouth closed again because they are going to do what they please. It can vary situation by situation as well.

i have had a similar situation to this. i had a best friend who i was friends with for 3 years, and she started dating this boy who i've known for a very long time and have never liked. he bullied me, and a few of my other friends, for years. when she started going out with him, we all just didn't really have an opinion on it. up until we never saw her anymore because she was ALWAYS with him. there was no balance! one day we sat down with her and tried to talk to her about it and she basically implied she preferred her boyfriend to us. i am a very very opinionated person, so being that, i spoke my mind by saying how he bullied me for years and years on end. she didn't seem to care much so that friendship ended fairly quickly. another thing about this whole situation is that WE ARE 15 YEARS OLD! she isn't going to be with him forever and as soon as they break up (which they nearly have, a number of times) she isn't going to have anyone to support her. i've witnessed him shouting at her, arguing with her and almost hitting her! this video gives some good advice ingrid, don't get me wrong, but what happens when the person changes into something they're not when they date the person you hate?

HelloSaysEmma I know I'm not Ingrid, but I just wanted to chime in and give an answer. My best advice is just to trust that one day the person will wake up and come to this realization on their own and actually do something about it. Some people are too far gone to be helped, sadly. I'm sorry things didn't work out between you two, and I have had similar experiences to be honest, but things happen for a reason. If anything though, try to remain optimistic even though the friendship has already ended. Relationships are difficult and even though some people don't deserve second chances, we all need someone to lean on in the end.

My friend is with this girl who no one thinks is good for him. The whole relationship started when she was dating his best friend and then essentially left her boyfriend for my friend (so it started off rocky), then he moved in a month later and has been paying for her rent since then (it's been a year). He has also been going to school so money is tight, meanwhile she can't hold down a job for more than a week and keeps getting fired for not showing up/showing up hungover/passing out at work. This girl steals alcohol from people at parties, shows up uninvited, gets pathetically drunk and then complains that people don't like her...meanwhile she never tried to talk to us? and our friend makes no moves to try and include her in the group of friends. Like we try and invite her out with all of us, but he never passes the message along. I asked him once (this was very rude of me) if he loved her, and he kept avoiding the question and then eventually said no? but it was kind of more like, "I don't want to answer this question because the answer is no" kind of deal. I really don't think that it's a question of not knowing her, because every time I talk to her it's incredibly painful and i want to scream in her face because she is so rude and inconsiderate.

I always let my friends know when I like their SO, but I probably wouldn't tell them if I didn't because... they know the person more than I do and they see something different. I will probably let my friends know that I will tell this to my friends so that they can ask "why don't you like this person" if they feel it necessary. Right now a lot of my friends are in relationships and I like the people they're with, so that makes me happy!

My best friend dated another friend of mine once (I introduced them). Everything was fine until he started taking drugs and being very nasty to people for no reason, including my husband. It killed me to see him when we went out together and she would bring him because I couldn't stand how horrible he'd been. She tried to ignore it even though she was there when he'd acted this way. I just had to stick it out for her sake even though I thought she deserved someone nicer. Eventually he started being mean to her. I used to be friends with a girl from middle school and we lost contact with each other for some years...until she found me again. I thought that was very sweet and we met up to have dinner together with her and her fiance. From the first day meeting him I did NOT like him...my first impression with him was bad..and the more I was around him the more I disliked him. My friend wound up marrying him and having a son with him as well. I totally agree on this, 90% of the times where I don't like them is bc my friends have never introduced us so I dont even know them even after several months. But I also carry this grudge around me bc one of my childhood best friends would constantly talk about her bf for months and put him before me all the time and we were like kids but for some reason I never forgot it.

My best friend doesn't have any friends where she lives and i honestly think the only reason she's with her boyfriend is because she doesnt want to be alone. It's selfish of me to think that he's bad for her and i honestly don't care if she truly loves him or not, i don't think he's the perfect guy for her. They fight a lot, she can't wear certain clothing item because her boyfriend said they reminds him of her exes, she can't sit beside a guy ever (once in class a teacher told this boy to sit beside her and share the textbook because he left his at home, the boyfriend found out and he got crazy mad. I mean what the hell is that?). When they're out,she can't look at other people, he expects her to either look at him or the floor. And when they hangout at school, he won't let her study even if she has test/exams because he said that studying is for when she's at home, if she's not home, she can't study and has to give full attention to him. I mean, guys, is it just me, or is he insane?

Cecilia Kim i tried convincing her a billion times but she won't listen. I KNOW!! She has basically no power over the relationship, he kept saying to her "whether keep things on his term or he'll end the relationship". i love my best friend but so so stupid for just listening to him....

Cecilia Kim She tries so hard to make him happy and i don't know why he still can't trust her. Everywhere she is, when he ask where she is and she tells him, he won't believe her so she'll have to take a picture of herself to prove it to him. I hope she'll realize she deserve way more than that and have the gut to end it soon. She said she is, she said she loves him but sometimes she just doesn't like how he is you know, but she told me that it's his flaw so she'll have to accept it. i don't think being crazy and obsessive is a flaw people in relationships should endure.

I wouldn't say that I didn't like my best friend's boyfriend, but I felt like, her ex was such a good guy and he became a really close friend of mine. So, my problem was, should I become friends with her new boyfriend too and when this relationship ends, say goodbye, again? I've been there before and can just agree with you Ingrid! At least be friendly, because if you don't even try, you might lose your friend like I did once and I regret it till this day. I hope somebody understands this feeling of ''being involved in the break up'' kind of thing. Peace!

If you’re worried your friend’s boyfriend is abusive, or if he’s an alcoholic or drug addict and you’re worried about her dating a guy like that- then voice your concerns. But if you don’t like their boyfriend because you think he’s dull, boring, annoying, not the kind of guy you’d date, you don’t think he’s good enough for her, or he tells the same stupid jokes over and over- then keep that to yourself. Otherwise, you’ll be the one she cuts out of her life.

I've run into the problem before where my friends significant other is not friendly to me. To the point where I would be at my friends house and their SO would walk into the room and it would be the first time they would have seen me that trip(since I came from out of town) and they wouldn't say ANYTHING to me. I would have to be the first one to greet them. That frustrated me because I tried my best to like this person and treat them with respect and friendliness and got nothing in return. My friend also did not seem to care that their SO did not want to ever communicate with me. Very odd situation. Though because I live in a different state from my friend, I rarely have to see the SO... Which makes it okay! It's sad though! I wish I could like the person! But if they are not going to be anything close to nice to me, it makes it hard to like them!

I once had this extremely fake friend who's boyfriend punched me in the stomach, and even after my "friend" found out, she still kept liking him. This was when I was in the fourth grade. Most of the times I don't like the boyfriends because of the way they treat my friends, or how they treat me when I am around. If they won't talk to me when I say hi or something then I am simply not going to put my foot out to treat them like they are special just because they are dating my friends. If I have a boyfriend and he doesn't treat my friends right then he is getting dumped. Especially since a lot of times when a guy is rude to your friends he wants you for himself.
