Last weekend I saw The Eagles on Saturday and KISS on Sunday. Joe Walsh played an Epiphone Jared James Nichols model on a few songs and Tommy Thayer played his Epiphone Signature on a good 1/3rd of KISS's set. It made me smile very much seeing that. I'd say Epiphone's are giggable if 2 guitarists from 2 legendary bands were playing them.

But the other reason big shot guitarists play Epiphone Les Paul is to avoid risking expensive Gibson Les Paul being damaged or stolen. The difference in tone is minor but the feel is bigger.

I had the Epiphone and loved it but had to get the “real” thing as my head calls it. I have to say that although the Epi is a great guitar, the Gibson outperforms it in every way, the pickups are incredible and despite what you thought, I found a big, big difference in the feel of them both. The Gibson just felt right if you know what I mean.

but did you have a regular epiphone les paul standard, or did you have this one specifically? because the one in the video comes from a production line that teamed up with the Gibson custom shop, hence its name being "inspired by Gibson", i mean i know there must be a difference, its still an epiphone, its cheaper than the Gibson, but these have been said to be a very game changer on the epiphone's line... i guess that long story short im just saying that its not really the same to compare a gibson to a "regular" epiphone, to compare a gibson to this epiphone line, or maybe you did have this one haha i was just wondering if the comparison was on point

I agree with everything you say here. I own both the epiphone & gibson les paul 50s standards & whilst I have to admit that the gibson is on another level in terms of quality, I actually enjoy playing the epiphone so much more due to the fact that i get nervous playing the gibson because it is so delicate. All you have to do is look at it & a ding appears. It's been a dream of mine for so long to own a gibson les paul standard, but the reality is that my playing suffers when using it because I'm more concerned with not damaging it. So because of that reason, I've regrettably decided to sell it. I've thrown in a seymour duncan jb & jazz humbucker set into the epiphone & I have to say, it is absolutely stunning in both sound & playability & is a seriously genuine alternative to the gibson.

I haven't seen guitars this good from Gibson ever. I have a Murphy Lab '57 that I don't play out ever...and on a whim I went into a Guitar Center and played a 50's off the wall which I haven't done in a long time. I knew the new management needed some time to work to get things better so I thought I'd give Gibson one last shot to really deliver. I plugged in the 50's and that guitar was something great right off the rip. Once I got it home on my setup....and I do not say this lightly...this is the best PAF Gibson Les Paul I have ever heard and the actual setup and playing is essentially magical. Hanging in a Guitar Center of all places with a dried out fret board and nobody even noticing it was a straight up stage assassin. We bought it on the spot. Got it home and played it for my awesome wife. We just both looked at eachother in disbelief. Within a couple of hours we were both in front of the computer looking for another one with a different top...and we bought without hesitation. Really dig in to whats going on with the specs. If you know great guitars and what made them great...the Standard 50's hits nearly all of the checkboxes. They are heavier so if you are getting older without a footrest situation or you have chronic back issues or just play better for you with something really light...this isn't the guitar for you. But if you're of the mind that is tired of guitars so light that they feel like toys and are tired of having literally no options in the 9 lb to 12 lb range...this is a return to the guitars Gibson was known for making. Truly remarkable.

Big fan of the inspired by Gibson range but recently got a Gibson Les Paul 50s. For me, the difference in feel is night and day. My Gibson was really bright with the burstbuckers, so switched them for the Tonerider AC2 set for a smoother more vintage tone. The neck is great - not overly chunky at all, solid tuners and the finish is awesome. If you can, give a Gibson a go but… saying that, you really can’t go wrong with an Epiphone.
@hotblackdesiato3451
@hotblackdesiato3451 3 жыл бұрын
Just a note re the nitro finish - they add a UV-blocker to it so the finish won't fade over time like the original 'bursts did (unfortunately). It also contains higher levels of plasticiser too so the finish will remain softer compared to the lacquer they used to use. That original lacquer would harden like glass so it'd chip or fracture as it'd became brittle over time. I bought a tobacco burst Standard 50s a couple of years ago and can't fault it, though it does weigh a ton. Gibson quality control seems to have improved greatly in recent years.
@theguitaristas
@theguitaristas 3 жыл бұрын
Cheers man, I did wonder about the UV qualities thanks for that info. Do you think maybe they have still not got the formula quite right? :)
@bazitube390
@bazitube390 3 жыл бұрын
@@theguitaristas They got the right formula but they just don't use it on standard models. If you look at well played custom shop models from early 2000s you can clearly see the fading. But the finish on standard model still checks and cracks like how nitro should be. there are plenty of nitro cracks on my 50s standard!
@hotblackdesiato3451
@hotblackdesiato3451 3 жыл бұрын
@@theguitaristas Hey dude, the current Standards have a thicker finish compared to the Custom Shop guitars. The nitro formula will have changed over the years as a result of two things - health & safety rules and money. Spraying nitro all day long is bad for your health so the formula probably had to change to make it safer to use for prolonged periods. Plus it's probably quicker to finish/buff a Standard range guitar that has more plasticiser in the finish than a Custom Shop which might use a purer nitro (time is money!). As for the 'fogging' that you see on your Standard's finish where your arm rests, that's possibly down to how acidic the oils in your skin are. If you want to see a real master at refinishing and aging Les Pauls, check out the 8Bomb Custom channel. The detail that he goes into is amazing.

@@automatoncollectives7237 I don't mean to belabor anything but statements regarding subjective topics are a reality because they are unique to a person's perspective. If he said Gibson is the best guitar or that his Gibson is better than all the other makes that he has tried,..its all true. At the same time, if you stated the opposite,..it's all true. You can debate forevermore and it doesn't necessarily mean that anyone is right or wrong, even with bold declarations such as "Gibson is the best guitar" Its fair to argue that in lots of ways but you become wrong when you start to represent the other person's statement as objective or trying to make it objective. They can't make it objective. What makes this topic subjective is not what someone says or doesn't say. Its already subjective before they open their mouth. The GIbson IS better when it comes from the mouth of someone who believes it to be. Again, it's true for all intents and purposes FOR the person stating such. If you take an objective reality such as,..Steel and Aluminum with equal masses have different weights and the steel is heavier. Then someone comes along and states that aluminum weighs MORE than steel at equal mass. Another excellent show and this time it didn't cost me any money--I already have both of these guitars. Those little marks on the Gibson, even the ding, are probably repairable, especially if you're good at doing drop fills. The ding wouldn't likely be completely invisible, but it could be much toned down and less noticeable. By the way, the differences, to my way of thinking, are minimal and I play the Epiphone as much as I do the Gibson.

Excellent video! Could tell it took a lot of hard work and careful thought. There’s a phenomenon in surfing where certain boards are a bit “suicidal”. They get dinged up every time you ride them, fall over in the house, and get bumped at a statistically impossible rate. Couldn’t help think of that with your new Gibson keep a close eye on that one 😂

I’m a bit late to this but I thought I’d add this incase anyone is wondering. The marks appearing on the Gibson is mostly referred to as Milking I believe, it’s what we used to call it anyway. It is very common in that area under your arm when you play. Mine did the same when it was new and eventually came out by itself. Personally I kinda like it but there is a specific polish you can get for it, pmt sell it. I would say it will fetch out the mark on the back from the stand too. Thanks.

The cracks in (both sides of) the Epiphone's neck at 20:20 suggest that it's had a fall, or been swung into something hard. Given that the poly finish is so much tougher than the Gibson's nitro, it must have been a hell of a knock. I always check this area when looking to buy a new guitar. Cracks here = instant reject. To see how many pieces the Epiphone's made from, would it be possible to look at the end grain around the body, or is there an opaque finish there? Regarding price differences: much of this must be down to labour costs, but in my experience, budget equipment always has inferior materials and components, and you get what you pay for. I chose a Squier CV 50s Strat over a Mexican one (didn't try a USA one that day) and while the CV is a fine playing guitar, the fretwire has turned out to be quite soft, and other components are just 'cheap'. With some aluminium foil shielding to reduce hum, it's still good enough to gig with, but I suspect a more expensive model would fare better. Maybe the Epiphone/Gibson comparison would throw up similar findings. Finally, the acid test for _any_ guitar, regardless of its price: with a clean tone, play the G string, twelfth fret, and see how long the note takes to decay. Play the same note on B/8 and D/15 and compare decays. G/12 will always be the shortest, but if it's noticeably short compared to the others, it can't be fixed and that guitar's a reject. It would be interesting to hear this comparison with both the Gibson and the Epiphone.

I'd also inspect these cracks very closely. This is a very common way necks break on Epiphones and also other brands with this nut/headstock design. Don't know if it's still the case, but in the past Thomann sold a lot of guitars with this type of damage on ebay in Germany.

When I got home I started to do a full deep clean which also lets you spot every imperfection. It had a lot of imperfections for a 2 year old guitar.. That made me remember your videos and because of them I was able to identify parts were swapped out like the bridge, pickups and tuners. I went back to the store and returned it. They were all quite surprised this was even sold to me. I bought a 2021 Gibson Les Paul Standard 50's Gold Top. Thanks for always providing informative and detailed videos. Great videos thanks so much for your efforts. I’ve bought the exact same Gibson as you review here and it’s a beautiful instrument. Several bits of the plastic including pickup rings had cracks in them like the screws had been over tightened. I had the option to send it back for exchange but I really bonded with it and liked the finished so opted for Gear4music to get replacement rings from Gibson. I patiently waited over 3 months for these but in current climate I understand the wait. Now the guitar is perfect. I replaced the output jack surround with a chrome one which to me made it more premium, but don’t plan any other upgrades. I’ve never spent so much on a guitar and hope to keep it as a forever guitar. I also own several Epiphone which are great value especially the new inspired by Gibson range. All of the screws for the truss rod covers on mine are wonky to so don’t suspect you did it in error on yours.

I know this is three years old but people still comment. I don’t have the money to buy a Gibson unless it was the only guitar I wanted to own. I like having a Tele, a Strat, ES339, and a couple of acoustics as well. So I got the Epiphone Standard 50’s for cheaper after Covid. Unless you are wealthy or a professional musician that makes a lot of money from shows and recording then I’m not sure why you would spend 4x’s the money on a guitar that you could match the sound on by tweaking your amp. Again, if you have disposable income then you can buy a lot of things the regular person might not.

One thing i will say is i love the look of that top on the Gibson, which on most modern gibsons i don't, the burst seems to be blended in which i like, on a lot i have seen they are almost two different clours with no blending which i can't stand, so you have a good one there. Once again, sir, you've made me appreciate Epiphone guitars even more. I'm also a bit of a fan boy, I own four of their creations so far (two LPs, one SG and a Casino). I've got a standard 50s on its way, finally found a nice burst, that purchase has been nearly 20 years in the making. My first electric was an Epiphone LP Standard ebony, I had seen one in a brown sunburst at the shop but by the time I saved all the money it was gone, so had to settle on a plain black one. Surprise surprise, it came with Gibson pups stock, so that got me going. Honestly, I think swapping those pups in a new Epi and throwing in Burstbuckers or what have you may elevate the sound of the guitar, and you'd still end up saving some bucks than if you go for "the real deal". To each his own, I'm not gonna deny that a Gibson LP has mojo, and it's still a dream for me that will come true one at some point, but for now Epiphone is saving the day! 😎

@@theguitaristas Hi guys , personally I believe it's one of two things causing this intermittent softness to the Gibson ' Lacquer ' finish ...1.) Either as you suggested they didn't get their formula mix just right at that time or , 2.) They don't have an atmospheric controlled spraying booth / room or one that is doing an adequate job ... Because I have had a mid 70's Gibson Les Paul since new & had it.on a guitar stand with only old style rubber pads on it & of course the usual lean my guitar neck against the Amp face between sets & neither left any scars or any sort of Mark's on it , so , what is the big difference between then & now ????? Maybe the weather conditions happened to be drier at the time coz i can't see them having any more of a state of the art spray booth than they would have today ....Maybe a closer eye on their Mix than they do now ... Was prolly mixed by human hands in the day , but now maybe machines are doing an auto mix & no one is checking the calibration on these mixing machines .....Like i said my LP has a pretty hard finish on it , & the neck has NEVER had a sticky feel to it like some do ... I believe these are teo issues GIBSON NEEDS to check into & get addressed & get back to us the consumers with some findings & answers ....Their overall fate & future lays completely in their own hands ...

The nitro finish is only "soft" if you get a brand new Les Paul that was made within the past few months. It takes at least 6 months to really harden up. That is the nature of the beast. Keep the guitar in it's case when not used for several months. The few months of sacrifice are well outweighed by a lifetime of pleasure. Nitro feels and looks fantastic and will age through the years as such. And I would venture to say ANY Les Paul given their weight will ding if you happen to drop it hard enough or bang it against something.
@johnuhrin846

@@arthurwalls9091 The nitro finish from the 70's is completely different than the nitro of today. Think EPA regulations. It has taken my Les Paul approximately 6 months to really feel hardened up. BTW my guitar has no dings or bruises. Don't drop it! That is bad news for any guitar finish.

I resisted the whole Les Paul thing for years. Ibanez (mainly Jems) and Parker Flys have been 'my bag'. Recently I gave in and bought an Epi LP Standard Pro which I 'pimped' to look like an LP HP model (various Chrome parts) and fitted a (home made) Jimmy Page wiring loom and Irongear Tesla Shark pups. It's a fine guitar but all it did was make me want 'the real deal' more. A 2018 Gibson LP Standard HP followed. What a fantastic piece of gear. Even opening the (composite) case is an event. It's like you said, I'm convinced they put some Vanilla scented narcotic in the Nitro that gets you addicted to them. It's become my current favourite guitar and I regularly 'perv' at it. Hi Colin, and thanks for a great comparison of these two guitars. You’re right to say that for Les Paul fans, the Gibson Standard is the pinnacle we can practically aspire to. After several clones I finally came into enough money to get a Gibson LP Standard back in 2007. I was so in awe of actually owning my dream at the time that I didn’t inspect it closely enough when it arrived. But over my years of ownership I gradually spotted that the binding didn’t fit properly in places, there was a crack that appeared in the wood of the body near the jack socket and a crack appeared in the wood in the cut out (interestingly where there binding didn’t fit properly). Disappointing given this guitar never left my bedroom and was never dropped or dinged. I’m guessing this is in part due to the poor quality control that may have plagued Gibson in that period (it does seem that post 2019 builds are better) but also possibly that I got a good deal on this because the place I bought it from was selling ‘B’ stock without actually telling buyers that’s what they were getting (buyer beware !). I won’t mention the shop as they are still going and getting good reviews so maybe I was just unlucky. Anyway, before the body cracked any more I decided to trade my disappointing Gibson experience for an Epiphone Les Paul Plustop Pro in 2016. What a night and day experience for me. The finish on the Epi was flawless, and is still, it plays wonderfully following a setup by GAK where I bought it and I still love it as much as when I bought it 7 years ago. I occasionally drift off and think I’ll supplement it with a G&L ASAT or maybe replace it with an Epiphone 339, but then I pick the Les Paul up again and think about when would I actually grab the G&L instead of the LP and that I’d miss the feel of the LP if I swapped it for a 339. So your conclusion sums up my experience exactly - by all means aspire to a Gibson, but don’t feel short changed in any way if what makes sense to you (financially, robustness etc) is the Epiphone. Thanks for a great channel and providing a good excuse to grab a coffee and while away an hour or so each week.

I've got to compare it against other guitars.. and it's only the past year it's made me realise what an absolute perfect instrument it is.. Ive played against Gibson's.. and I just can't swap it out.. Also.. I left it in a bag for 10 years untouched round my brother's.. he brought it round the other year.. I cleaned and straightened, intonation etc.. and it was perfect again. They hold their tune so well also.. once they get used to the rooms atmosphere.. literally pick up and play.. check tune.. oh it's in tune.. crazy.

Both good just diffrent. Also the gibson in general can be sweet AND dry and 'hone' in on a tone. The epis seem more open but in a good way. The tributes are 2 peice, long tenon, maple cap with a maple venneer on top of that. Great guitars

Hey Mathias, that is so kind of you say this and its very much appreciated! - I really don't consider myself a teacher, my playing has just evolved through years of practice and I think you and everyone can do what I do.... you can play along with my jams which you will find at the end of most of my films and steal the licks and riffs from me, just as I have done from others before! ;) My inspiration comes from many great players and I try to find something that is relevant to players of the style guitars I am reviewing... in this film inspiration comes from Joe Walsh of course! So I just start with a loop, a feeling, or a riff, or maybe a bend or two and see where it takes me. I also like to listen to Frank Zappa as he could solo over just one chord and make it sound musical (to my ears but not everyone agrees!)... Frank Zappa says 'Shut U 'n Play Yer Guitar'. It’s also great timing that you got it at the original lower price! Gibson just raised the price on these standards to $2700. Fantastic content, really enjoy your videos.

Colin. Always enjoy your video reviews. They are the most honest and pragmatic on KZbin. I have an Epi 59 and truly love it, although it has made me think that I might really like to own a Gibson standard 50s. Now I'm not so sure as I would be paranoid about damaging the finish. I like my guitars to be perfect rather than roadworn. Definite food for thought.

The fret ends on the gibson are covered with the binding but not on the Epiphone. It looks like the frets on the Epiphone were fitted after the binding.

The Gibson sound more blanced and fuller, unplugged and plugged to my ears. Good video, thx!

I bought my Epi LP 50 about a month ago. I thought the fit, finish, and sound were outstanding! I can only compare it to my 80’s Gibson LP Studio, but it is clearly a great guitar for my novice playing skill. Thanks for the video!!

You should try Heritage guitars...they have "custom core" artisan aged guitars at the same price as Les Paul standards...

Excellent review that has helped me to decide on my next guitar! Also, I have dealt a few times with Guitar Galleries and have also had very positive experiences. They are a very helpfuil group of guys.

I keep my 2009 Epiphone 56 Gold Top by me bed, mate. Swapped out the P90’s with Gibson Mini’s. Put in a bone nut, Gibson Deluxe Tuners and some 0.022 PIO Caps but I’m thinking of going with .033. It’s me go to Les Paul, absolutely love the neck size on it, cheers!
