Had the lucky fortune of buying an old Goya thinline guild copy( model 103 ) back in the early 90's that had been set up with DeArmond "Martin" fidelitone pups. Damn, what a sound! Especially with stainless flatwounds & an added b-3 vintage Bigsby & aluminium bridge. Lost it to theft & never found another guitar that ever quite thrilled me as much. Fernandes Monterey pro player these days.

@@TheGuitarShow This was a fantastic history, demo and explanation of these most excellent pickups. Question, how do they sound as compared to a vintage Gibson AlNiCo VI Staple Pickup? If I remember correctly the Gibson Staple pickups was developed because Les Paul the Man insisted on installing the Dynasonics into his then new Les Paul solid body guitars! Curious how much the shape of the pole piece magnets affect the tone, round with the DeArmond verses Rectangular Gibson Staple pickups.

That's a fantastic sound. I love the versatility of teles as a modding platform. Like building an engine, you've combined great components and built a beast! I love the sound. I put a pair of humbucker sized p90s in a tele. I know they aren't true p90s but you get a neat sound. The capacitor can be essential with hotter pickups. Anyway love what you did. Great tone and great video! ✌

It sounds awesome and it definitely suits you Sir ! I have been considering a Tele project of my own for years tbh. I change my mind a lot on the details, but basically I've come to the conclusion that I want a Strat style belly cut and the neck shape of my Les Paul . After decades playing a Gibson Marauder and the last several years of Rickenbacker ownership , I also like a Blend control . One day ....😉

Just put a Gretsch Hi-lotron in the neck of my telecaster yesterday. The balance with the broadcaster bridge pickup is perfect. It's got a lovely clear sound and happily shares a 250k pot with the bridge. It doesn't have that same dynasonic bite, but I'm really chuffed.

@@TheGuitarShow so what I’m actually going to do (it’s ordered lol) is a Jazzmaster style guitar from Lewis Guitars, called an Adélie). It’s going to have three of those Dynasonics, with a four way switch. Neck, neck and bridge, bridge, and off. The middle pickup will have a blue led push button that will activate the middle pickup in any position (just to make it a little quirky), mastery bridge/trem and there will also be a kill switch. It’s going to be blue, but a bit of a darker shade of blue, and the pickguard will be Daphne blue if they can make that work (Reverend guitars is doing something similar right now with their guards, which inspired me), if not, it will be white. Roasted maple neck with an Ebony board. lol… should be something 😂

Thanks for the wire suggestion. I made a Jazzmaster pickup with Strat length magnets and twice the normal space for wire than a normal Jazzmaster. They are not far off of these Dearmonds. The 43 wire would smooth them a bit. I might try making them with 1/4” magnets after seeing these and the insides of Ric Toasters.

Sounds great. On the Fender/Guild/Dearmond guitars around the millennium, I did some research once, as I have their M75T. Apparently ... there were two types of pickup used. The first ones were called 2K and were real dynasonics; later they called them 2000 and those ones were P90s in a dynasonic casing. The way to tell them apart is that the 2Ks had ever so slightly bevelled edges on the pole pieces, while the 2000s were sheared across. I have the 2Ks and they definitely sound like yours. Not identical, of course, because no two things are the same, but they have the same signature, a kind of liquid twanginess. I know P90s, and they are nothing like those. Are you still using it, three years later?

My dream tele build is finally nearing completion. I got the same white late 50’s DeArmond in the neck, but I have a flatpole from 1952 in the bridge. 43 gauge wire has more resistance i think and those pickups are wound close to Gibson pickups specs. That would explain why they sound clear and bright because of less wire needed on the bobbin to get to the same DC resistance. I may be wrong about that though. Less winds means less output and less crunch, but less capacitance too.

43g wire will have a higher reading than 42g wire for the same "output"- a pickup wound with 43g wire reading 7k will be the same as one wound with 42g wire in the high 5k. The 43g will have more of a (high) mid focus and be more compressed. I don't know where you are getting your info that the de armonds were wound with 43g; many modern day winders go with 42g (personally I would go with 42g as I like the most "open" sounding pickup I can find).

I love this channel. You do all the things that I want to do. Like I'm always getting ideas of putting certain rarer types of pickups into guitars that have never had them in before. And so I always go on KZbin and search to see if anyone else has built a guitar like a tele or strat with these kinds of rare pickups, and invariably your channel comes up, because you have the same ideas as me, you just have the money and talent to actually do these things, unlike me lol I really just love the idea of a tele with all sorts of types of pickups. Because it's just a big flat slab of wood. It seems like the perfect nodding platform. Even though a strat is probably easier, because all 3 pickups on a strat are where the pick guard is. So as long as you rout out the whole thing, you can fit any type of pickup in there. Whereas the tele bridge complicates things. You have to buy a new bridge to get it to work.

except the "knowledge" isn't quite accurate. you didn't dodge any bullet. first of all, let's talk about enrico ciacci. there is, to this day, debate about who actually played on those morricone western soundtracks with at least four different italian guitarists arguing over who played what on those sessions. we don't even actually know who played on them, so imagining which guitar an unknown individual performed with is even more of a stretch. assuming it was enrico ciacci, he most certainly did not use a tele modified with dearmonds. this guitar came way later. to imagine otherwise is nothing more than conjecture and fantasy. early '60s era photographs and videos of ciacci mostly depict him playing a stratocaster. you can also find images of him playing gretsch, gibson, eko, burns, etc. allesandro allesandroni, another one of the guitarists who allegedly played on these tracks, also used a strat during that period. some of the most twangy, spaghetti western-esque riffs you've ever heard, period, were recorded using a fender stratocaster, in fact. hank marvin, james calvin wilsey, dick dale, the ventures....strat, strat, strat. but really, any of these guitars will make this sound. it's more a function of how you play and the right amplifier tone and effects (reverb/echo) than the instrument you are using. hell, even a gibson flying v will do spaghetti western. just listen to wall of voodoo's version of "ring of fire". the king of kings of all spaghetti western tones is the james bond theme, right? well that was played on an old archtop with a funky dearmond rhythm chief 1000 "monkey on a stick" clamp-on pickup! so gretsch will do it (duane eddy), jazzmaster will do it (though a strat is a more versatile sound), a jaguar is also good choice, so is a stock telecaster, dearmond 2000 pickups are great as well. link wray used a firebird, a yamaha, a danelectro...so you see, the guitar just doesn't matter. there is no spaghetti western guitar. the sound is based on composition, style, and production.

Big fan of Dearmond pickups. I have the g5129 that is my workhorse. I’m building a partscaster and to add a dearmond pickup would be awesome. I have a white one but would prefer a black.

@@TheGuitarShow the white ones I had were a lot more dirtier sounding. The black sound more like a single coil. I’m partial to the black for my particular tone. I tried many different pickups/guitar from p90 to lipstick to fender single coil. Nothing compares to the dearmond tone. Come to find out all the famous spaghetti westerns we’re from those pickups.

I totally dig it. I accidentally purchased a Duo Jet '57 Reissue and it came with the Dynasonic single coil pick ups and I was kinda mad at first until I looked the price difference between the guitar I got and the one I thought I was getting. LOL $2500 difference (shows the shell game that mark up really is) lol. But it did;t take long to fall in love with these pickups. And you gave me a lot of info that backs up what I thought all along. They are my favorite pickups. Do you think the adjustable magnets have a lot to do with the sound. It must they are so much longer. P-90's are nice but not quite the same. Anyway, I like your Tele and your style. Be well....

i love to play Dynas in the middle position. I have a vintage '60s set and a modern set of 2ks and I love both. The 2Ks sound very close to the old ones and nothing like a P90 IMO :) There are two versions of the 90s ones and one is much closer than the other. You can't body mount the modern ones and they still have the tall metal cases so would need to be routed on a Tele. 2000s is the right model name; Dynasonic is a Gretsch designation only. Structurally they are totally different to a P90. More like a fat Strat pickup. I enjoyed your playing.

@@TheGuitarShow sorry, all got a bit garbled. Gary Donague wrote a good summary on the different types of 2000s a.k.a. Dynasonics. I can't post a link.but people should look for "Identifying DeArmond 200, 2000, and 2K Pickups" As someone who owns all three, I like the vintage and the modern 2000s - the same as are currently sold on the Guild site. The intermediary 2K model is quite a good pickup but doesn't sound much like the original. All would require some routing except on a hollowbody.

I’ve had experience with all the varieties of Dynasonics. If we take the 50s version as the gold standard, then the closest modern equivalent are TV Jones T’armonds which sound practically identical although they are built slightly differently. Seymour Duncan Dynasonics are built the same as the old ones but for some reason don’t sound right - too muddy/heavy. And modern Gretsch-made dynas, D’Armond 2000s etc are just imposters, nothing more than cheap imitations. The ones on your guitar would have been early - mid-60s ones that appeared on Guilds. They were generally hotter than the 50s ones but in other respects, exactly the same. The gold ones that you mentioned although made by D’Armond aren’t Dynasonics. We call them Goldfoils, a totally different pickup but there is a similar tonal quality; you can tell they are in the D’Armond family.
