Rockabilly Guitar is all about the licks!! Today we take a close look at 5 riffs that I would consider PERFECT guitar licks in the rockabilly genre. Spoiler alert: there’s some Cliff Gallup, Scotty Moore, Carl Perkins, Brian Setzer and the little known Sparkle Moore. Stick around to see why I’m so impressed with all of these licks! (And watch the end to see my last little jam!)

Hey, I knew that second lick. I got my first guitar from a bluegrass player who helped me get started playing. I had no desire to play bluegrass but it helped me get started.

Hey Texas Elvis, if you’re talking about the black one (sorry I’m just catching up with comments and this is in a list on KZbin!) then that’s a duo jet, 57 reissue, 2005 I believe! Thanks man!

I’ve heard that the reason Carl Perkins used a lot of “blue notes” was because when he started playing he was too poor to buy new stings. So what he had to do was literally tie strings in a knot with pliers when a string would break. This turned them into barbed wire almost and he would cut his fingers playing so he had to use either the note before or after whatever he was intending on playing or bend the best he could to hit the note. This led to him developing a style and sound that he carried over even when he could afford new strings using a lot of chromatic runs and licks like you played from *Matchbox.* In other words his style wasn’t as much intentional as necessary.

I would love to get a hold of wherever you read this- it’s fascinating, quite a story, and sounds more than possible- I gave it a bit of thought and it would make sense! Thanks for that!!

@@AdrianWhyte if I’m not mistaken it’s mentioned in the first or second paragraph of his Wikipedia page. Also, I don’t know if you listen to *Drive-By Truckers* but they have a great song called “Carl Perkins’ Cadillac” that is a great story about the early SUN days.

@@AdrianWhyte Noooo. 😭😭😭 Actually I would love to hear some criticism of the 55 since it's on my list but there are none in my area for me to play. Was it too "microphonic" in a live setting?
@AdrianWhyte
@AdrianWhyte Жыл бұрын
@@williamd1891 I had to have the pickups wax dipped, initially they were very microphonic. That guitar was always a bit of a struggle tonally, it either sounded amazing or difficult.. I dunno, I’ll probably get something again if I can afford it one day! But the jet does it for me and I love my double anni so I just let it go!
@williamd1891
@williamd1891 Жыл бұрын
@@AdrianWhyte Your Jet is gorgeous BTW. I understand what you mean on the Chet. Sometimes an axe can be too sharp. Great fro chopping wood but can also cut your finger off. Too unforgiving in other words. Maybe I'll go for the RHH instead. Just waiting for my local to get some in stock.

Adrian, do you think the guys that came up with all these classic licks knew exactly what they were doing or were they just kind of jamming and something stuck and we’re now calling them legendary?
@AdrianWhyte
@AdrianWhyte Жыл бұрын
I think there’s a combination of all the above, I would think at the very least most artists at some point would have been simply making the music that was in their heads, at the very least I think they would have been excited with some belief in what they were doing being something special!
