I worked in downtown Atlanta in the mid 80s and road the train many times. When watching these videos I always wonder how those peoples' lives turned out. Are they still alive? Where were they headed that day? Random lives from decades ago preserved....

Wow except for some minor differences nothings really changed with the Marta transit system. Based on this video though.. ATL looked a lot more serene and quieter back then.

It was. Except I do remember when seated in the top of Atlanta Fulton County Stadium, I could hear automatic weapons fire. Ah, the days before the Brady Bill...

Stations, rail lines, and busways never built: Tucker Line, Brownlee Station, Perry Station, Thomasville Busway, Hapeville Line. There were others I can’t remember.

at 34:46 the bankhead-procter creek line tunnel exists but they haven't build the rail yet and it wouldn't been until 1990 when they started construction on bankhead station, and open in December of '92.

@23:17 That part's changed dramatically! That's about where the line to North Springs branches off, and there doesn't even seem to be any visible provisions!
@truelife974

Because there wasn't. GA 400 was supposed to serve as an express bus route like GA 166. The north line was constructed instead out of nowhere and done rather quickly. I still wonder to this day why GA 166 didn't get and isn't planning for the same treatment.

Interestingly, there *are* visible provisions at 19:38 for the never-built Northwest line which would have branched off between Arts Center and Lindbergh Center stations! (Current as of 2023: you can still see it riding on MARTA's Red/Gold lines. Southbound from Lindbergh Center/northbound from Arts Center, you can see the tunnel approach/diverge from you prior to the train exiting/entering the underground portion of its run. It's a bit hard to describe, but if you're in ATL you'll know it when you see it, especially if you've seen this video.)

And then the CQ312s and CQ400s showed up and began modernizing everything: That female voice. The LED signs. The CQ310/11s extend from 4 to 6 or 8 cars while being repainted to match the CQ312s CQ310/11/12s mixed together.

Slow due to balancing the shorter distance traveled at the time against the frequency. As the terminus of the north and south lines were extended the speed (of the same trains) increased. Also, the spontaneous creation of the north line impacted the speed and frequency as well. Once upon a time the terminus of the south line was West End.

@@hoodboyzAtl the propulsion systems were changed. notice the humming on this video rather than the loud whining on the trains today. they changed it to match the CQ312 (the one with the blue seats) the 310&311 are the ones in the video which were upgraded later in time. :)
