Hi! I know this is an older video, but I just want to say how much I love you and how you present your content. Pure wholesome…. topped off with a Verse. Nothing can beat you. My mom died and left my 87yr old father alone for the first time in his life. In the 1960’s, he served our country in the USAF, with tremendous pride. I grew up with my mom making SOS because my father loved it so much throughout his service days. Well, when our mother passed, she had made her own recipe cookbook for me and my two other siblings. I’ve been a subscriber of yours for a while…. then tonight, out of the blue, this video of yours, just popped up on my reel. In the three cookbooks my mom made, not one includes her SOS recipe. My father is so lonely and depressed, thankfully he’s active, but he won’t help himself to eat causing him to loose weight, which he didn’t need to loose, as he’s always been slim. With this recipe video appearing just now, on my feed, I’m taking it as a sign from my Mom to make this for him. I think he’ll cry when I bring this meal over for him. Thank you SO much for sharing your recipes and for keeping our dear Lord in your content. May He bless you and your precious family in every way, every day. Much Love and Peace to you. 🎚🙏🏼♥️🇺🇸

My husband introduced me to this dish after we met. My dad was a roast man, and I preferred spaghettios and ravioli as small child. I read about it in cookbooks, but that was it. We used ground beef too, instead of chipped beef, which is very salty. Since I was usually feeding at least two men instead of children, I used two and a half pounds of beef. If I ever have to serve teens or adults again, I'll use the beef bouillon to help them think there's more meat and help stretch it too. I still might use at least a pound and a half of meat. I love that you have the Pledge of Alligence in your kitchen, a great reminder of our original values too. We need to turn back to God in this country, too many people are being lured away by Buddha, Mohammed, Hari Krishna and many other false gods. That can't help them in times of trouble or heal their bodies or calm their minds when they have negative and hurtful thoughts. God bless you and your family.

I always cook this with mashed potatoes thats how my mom made it most of the time. We did toast when we were low on potatoes. Its one of my favorite comfort foods. I think I will have to cook this with in the next few days, it is good... Anyone just starting out making gravy and having a problem with flour taste. I brown my flour for 2 to 3 minutes and you have to stir constantly you do not want a speck of flour to burn even the littlest amount of burnt flour will make the gravy taste terrible so remember to stir constantly and not on high heat I brown flour over medium heat. The flour won't burn if you keep stirring for the 2 to 3 minutes and getting every spot. Just dont let gravy making intimidate you its not the hard and gets easier every time you make it before long you will be a pro... Thanks for sharing and the kind words. My father served in the military and we had SOS on toast often growing up. We never turned up our noses at this dish. Then again we were raised, if it’s on your plate, you will eat it or go to bed hungry. Lol

We ate that alot in the 50's and 60's sometimes with tuna fish or salmon as we lived on the river. Grandma would bake the salmon and then shred it into the gravy for a change as they rarely went to the grocery store except for flour, sugar and coffee. The rest was raised and canned. Beef, pork, chicken, fruits and vegetables. It was great to be raised like that. God Bless 🙌

I'm the oldest of six children so we had a family of eight. Mama did not work a public job but she did work in the house. The old saying that a woman's work is never done is so true. Mom did everything from scratch..... the clothes she made..... blouses, shirts, skirts, socks and the food was wonderful. SOS was a main Staple in our home . Along with potatoes, a lot of dried beans, rice, homemade cornbread and biscuits and Cane or sorghum syrup. Dad retired from the military. When I got married I introduced it to my wife. Occasionally she will substitute and use bulk sausage instead of hamburger. I've always enjoyed fried runny eggs on top of my SOS. And you're right about the fat content because during the Depression that's the reason why the South fared as well as they did was because of the high fat content in their diet. Back then we always had true homemade lard. The Smokehouse is a handy thing to have. Back in the 40s, fifties, and sixties, nothing was wasted. I truly thank the Lord for all of his many blessings throughout the 7and 1/2 decades that I've been here on earth. Thank you Hillbilly Kitchen for your videos and for also sharing the word of God. And may God continue to bless us during these disastrous days that we no doubt are facing in the future. Look up for our Redemption draws nigh!

I tried this recipe yesterday for my Texas born husband and my granddaughter. I am a German immigrant, living in the US since 20 years, a proud citizen since 2013. Well, somewhere in the comments I read that this is a navy recipe, "save our ship." My granddaughter wanted butter rice, her favorite, with it and that seemed fine to me. When my husband came home from work, I told him that he would get an old navy recipe for dinner that day called "Save Our Ship." He looked at me, looked on the dinner table, and said, "this ain't no navy dish, this is shit on a shingle and you forgot the toast." LOL I am still laughing because it was so funny. Btw. he liked the dish even without the shingle LOL.

Hi Becky, I'm trying to catch up on some of your older videos but haven't had time lately, trying to use up the apples from our trees and this year was the best year ever for both quantities and apple size. So far I have canned 42 pints of applesauce, 9 jars of apple butter and 7 quarts of apple pie filling. I still have one of those big plastic buckets that have ropes for handles full, and I haven't had to pick all of the apples on my trees. That amount was only from the lower part of the trees without getting up on a ladder, so up higher is still full of apples. I know that this is a blessing but it's been overwhelming. So I have taken the last 2 days off because I'm older and haven't been well. Nothing catching, just my heart and I'm working with my heart doctor. I just wanted to tell you that I so appreciate your wonderful videos. You are so relatable and I feel like I am right there in the kitchen with you. Thank you for everything that you do.

One of my favorite meals is hamburger gravy over biscuits. I use the cheapest 70% ground beef to make the best gravy and it makes a little more. If you use a leaner beef you will need some additional fat. When I was raising my kids there were times I used 1/2 pound gr beef and added bacon grease to make a larger batch, and I'd save the other 1/2 lb gr beef for spaghetti sauce or hamburger helper type meals.
@glendagrant90423 жыл бұрын
I think it would be really good over homemade biscuits. My family never made it, either side. My mother could not cook even though her mother, sister fabulous southern cooks. I am going to make it and serve with biscuits. I like sliced tomato with plain gravy and biscuits so will go with that. It is just us 2 and I have started using 1/2 pound of ground beef in everything. It saves money and no waste. I recently bought lean ground sirloin and made salisbury steak. My husband wouldn't eat it saying it did not taste like "real meat". He just ate potatoes and gravy. That was a lesson. I did not like the texture much but wouldn't tell him that. lol
