I'm a new subscriber. I enjoy these longer videos. You're an interesting person. Back in the 1930's -50's my grandmother would give food to hobos. They would come to the back door then sit on the back porch while they ate. This made my grandfather nervous but they were always polite and thankful. The house was close to the Chicago & Northwestern stop in Beloit WI. One hobo told my grandmother there was a symbol nearby indicating food could be found there.

@@TheHoboShoestring I'm praying you can keep riding and teaching us this life story as it unfolds, and those symbols maybe you can draw them or film some that exist. It's certainly enlightening to hear from the hobo themselves to dispel the myths and stereotypes. That the hobos of you're era aren't like some of the newer millennial you mentioned "dirty boys" who don't wash and competitively WTH. I don't wan't to ask you how was the longest you went w/o washing but from what you said you could go 2 weeks without anybody knowing so I gather it greater. I start gutting bit sticky after one day w/o shower. I wonder more of the stories of in the storm when things go bad how you endure like the long walks when you got stuck on the coal line or any adventure camp stops in sheer wilderness and how long that could cater for yourself before needing to restock at town. How you funded your survival? And how long is the longest you've walked. I'm so happy you don't drink and you chose life, I gather the lack of fresh stable diet was perhaps 1/2 the problem because I know of people who drink 12 beers a day and eat well but are in 50's even if they look 60's still keep a job but only just. Thanks again and MGBY Hobo Shoestring, keep them laces tight brother !

You and your life story are amazing demonstrations of freedom. I'm so glad you stopped drinking before you lost your life to it. I've been clean and sober for 34 years, the best decision I've ever made. Everything positive in my life is directly related to my continual discovery of why it is that I needed to medicated/anesthetized myself as a young man. You and what you share about your life and train travels have become my favorite choice of education and entertainment. I've always been fascinated by railroads and have spent countless hours at many favorite spots waiting for the next train to come by. I really appreciate all I'm learning about a subject that I love, and yet, have known so little about. The freedom you represent is what many, including me, are missing in life. If ever out west in the Roseville, CA area, look me up, I'd like to meet you in person. Safe travels and wishing you good health. Chris Conley

Let me preface w/this: I've been a train enthusiast for 40 years. Model railroading, real train watching & photographing and just learning about freights and various lines I liked and their history. I've learned more technical stuff from Hobo Shoestring in the last month or so than I have the last 10 years and I sincerely mean that. Especially the point at :56 where he zooms in on the hoppers brake piston being out and that indicating the brakes are applied and that car or train is going nowhere soon, I never knew. I'm now a subscriber. Great stuff here, stay safe out there Hobo Shoestring and stay sober my man!! Gotta keep your wits about you around the trains.

I was able to quit drinking quite easily. I would drink about a thirty pack per week. I didn't think it was a big deal but my Dr. got all over my ass for drinking that much so I stopped drinking in 2009, at the age of fifty-five. I have read that most people can't stop drinking without help.

His life will be difficult as serious damage was done. It’s funny how you can drink a couple and think “that didn’t help much, maybe another will work.” But it usually doesn’t. It just gets worse. Anyway, the train terminology reminds me of my model trains when I was young. Air brakes were an invention of George Westinghouse.

God bless you. You are so lucky to have survived alcoholism, it killed my son a month after his 34th birthday.
@craigfazekas39234 жыл бұрын
I am so sorry to hear that- genuinely. When I was 30 or so, after started drinking around age 14, I became a blackout drunk. I was waking up in my own backyard without a clue as to how I'd got there & so on. My parents pulled me aside one day & said these words, "guy, you're starting to scare us". This for me was reason enough to stop. I did & the next 10 days were a horror. How did I even continue to go to work ?! I was drinking a 30 pack a day plus a pint or more of bourbon.... My ability to stop is a thing that I feel blessed about. And believe me, as a 30 year old, I would NEVER even think of saying things like "blessed". This is a result of aging & perspective. The ability to stop alcohol ?.... Therein lies a difference in folks, or maybe even part of God's plan for each of us. Why I had the ability ? Where THAT came from ? I honestly had no idea- 'cause I was in pretty deep. Real friggin' deep. I continue to feel lucky to this very day. If I'm being honest, did I stop everything ? No, I did not- not in the least. I am an addict- I purely switched gears. But I knew the road I was on meant destruction. What is it that makes some people realize this sort of thing, and others not ? I am eternally grateful that I saw myself going down a bad road. Why could I ? Why can't others ? What's the difference in people that can & cannot ? It's a question that I marvel at almost daily. What the hell- why me ? There'll never be an answer, but it doesn't ever make me stop pondering- why, exactly ?.... And others not ?.... I'd like to potentially counsel others, but I have issues still. Addiction & self esteem being prime among them... Potentially, what I choose to do now has damaging qualities, too. So I'm no saint- I've been addicted to one substance or another since age 13. I am now 51- and have stage 3 colo-rectal cancer. If anything, I'd like to try to convey this to you concerning your loss. And that is that life takes some wild turns for all of us. I don't pretend to fully, truly know your pain. I never had kids myself to better understand your pain/plights concerning his loss. Yes, he was lost to alcohol. But, as life is a truly funny thing, he may well have gotten clean, but succumbed to a potential, say, brain aneurism or form of cancer just a short time afterward. An auto accident.... There are no guarantees. This actually reminds me of one of my musical heroes- Stevie Ray Vaughan. He was a big time alcohol & cocaine addict. He cleaned up, only to have his helicopter pilot fly into the side of a mountain in fog, after a show in Wisconsin in 1990. Got clean & died. Where's the justice in that, exactly ? I just wish to convey the uncertainty or "no guarantees" of life. Maybe this does not help you one iota, but I felt your pain when I read your entry- and my input is only put out here to possibly help. God has a plan for us all, and strange as it is to consider ? That plan included the loss of your son. I have lots if trepidation saying that to you !! But, this is what I have come to believe over my years & my intention is to recognize you and possibly help in some small way. He has a plan for us all. I hope you're able to take some solice in at least part of what I've said. Your post in this thread made me want to respond to you and hopefully I was able to ease you in some way... One thing is for sure- it's the goodness of ol' Shoestring, that you & I can see, that brought us together to begin with....and KZbin, too ! Feel free to respond, if you'd like. I only want what's best for you, so don't hesitate, k ? Warm regards, Craig 😎

@@craigfazekas3923 All I can say at this point is that if no one in this world were proud of you, I am. I know your parents are proud but just know others care too. I know the decline alcohol puts a person on. It takes a lot to beat it and to stay on top of it. My son drank vodka and he was so bad he even drank rubbing alcohol one time. His father was an alcoholic and I guess it was in my son's gene's. I'm not a drinker at all, yes I did party now and then as a young girl but I haven't done that in years. A lot of people have no clue how over powering alcohol is until they experience it or watch someone decline from it. From the UK. Always thought I'd become a tramp when I got old. Until I met a disabled lady who'd lost her parents and nobody to look after her. Gave me a good reason to help her and get over my rebels. Knew a few who killed themselves over alcoholism, one even jump in front of a train. Best of luck.

Loitering is not the 998feet for a lot more to be seen than in this country but the fact of this country was a bit like this is the fact it has to go down to make 6AM the most important part in this world
