I think 1987 was the year to watch hockey ever! You have Gretzky, Lemieux young and amazing, The "Chuck" Norris Division with Bob Probert, Joey Kocur, Wendel Clark...Neely an Bourque in Boston, the Quebec - Montreal rivalry, Punch-Up In Piestany bench clearing brawl in World Juniors, the "The Easter Epic" playoff game, pre-game playoff game brawl between Montreal and Philadelphia...and after the NHL season , Canada Cup 87! Unbelievable year, the best year for hockey, the best hockey played for me.
Philadelphia was one of those really good teams that couldn't get that many cups.

Just a quick update on the consecutive games streak for Doug Jarvis. As of May 24, 2021, there could be a possibility that the record could be challenged during the 21-22 season. Keith Yandle of the Florida Panthers is at 922, which puts him in second, only a few games ahead of Gary Unger. He presently has two years remaining on his contract with the Panthers, so he's someone to keep an eye on.

Another update about Yandle. Despite the final two years of his contract with the Panthers being bought out, he did sign for a year with the Philadelphia Flyers, and as of October 19, 2021, his streak is still active at 924 games, 40 behind Jarvis. There's also presently another active one in Phil Kessel of the Arizona Coyotes at 903 games. Also, Patrick Marleau technically still has his streak active at 910, but he's presently still a free agent as far as I know.

As of January 8, 2022, Keith Yandle is at 956 consecutive games for the Philadelphia Flyers, putting him only eight back of Jarvis. Also, Phil Kessel of the Arizona Coyotes is at 932, so he has a decent shot at the record as well.

To me - one of the proudest moments in Philly's history. A knackered Flyers team without their best goalscorer took on one of the greatest teams in history and took them to seven games. No one has put it better than Gene Hart - "My friends, years to go, in '95, in 2000, as long as this league exists those who have seen this series, will say - "You should have seen the series in '87 between the Oilers and the Flyers".

If the Flyers had Tim Kerr that finals...could have been a different outcome. Losing a 50 goal scorer against that Oilers team was just brutal.

This was the year of my earliest memories following the NHL. I remember when the Leafs beat the Blues in the playoffs and when the Oilers won the Cup.

Speaking of Hanlon, one of the best games I was at that the Capitals lost was a game against Detroit in the 80's where he was in net. I sat first row behind the net the Caps shot at twice, so I was behind him for the first and third period. He shut the Caps out 1-0.

Back to '86, Edmonton should have been up 3-1 in that series and 6-2 in that game as they were the superior team (no disrespect meant to the Flames of '86 who were also a very good team). Steve Smith's fluke-r may have been the straw that broke the camel's back, but in the grand scheme of the series and playoffs it was a pinch of salt in an Olympic-size swimming pool.

not enough credit is given to Mike Bosse, my father always told me that he was the best pure goal scorer he's ever seen and his numbers back it up. So why don't we talk about Bosse like we do Brett Hull or someone of the same ilk?
@patch83766 жыл бұрын
Panthers Hockey some do. It's a good point that he's probably underrated and doesn't get in the all-time conversations as much as he should. Part of that is also likely due to his shorter career. Both Brett and Bobby played a lot more, and Ovi's already been around longer, too. Plus everyone's offense got overshadowed in years Gretzky was basically competing against himself and his previous season's totals for the Art Ross.

As decent of a pick as Turgeon was at the time, the fact the Sabres and 14 other teams passed on what would become the ultimate prize of that draft in Joe Sakic is rather head scratching to say the least. Granted back then scouting wasn't like it is now and I am seeing it through the power of hindsight, but I mean even back the scouts would have had to see that Sakic's junior numbers were much better than Turgeon's numbers and by a decent margin. On top of that, Sakic performed as good, if not better, in the World Juniors for Canada than Turgeon.

Say what you will about the Norris division but it was evenly matched. Only 9 points between first and last. And the teams that missed the playoffs in the other divisions were worse.
