Probably Trotz' fault, giving the kind of money long term to two aging stars might not feel like a reward for making the playoffs by surprise and almost winning a round. One acquisition too many, will be harder to resign guys in the future.

@@Nicovertime Capitals GM more impressive. I'm.a Devils fan and loved what they did both for the short and long term. But the Capitals did not have as good a cap situation and totally retooled their aging team in one off season. The Devils actually had enough cap to accomplish even more, probably missed on a top-6 winger because Nashville overpaid, I'm not complaining, just giving the Caps their due.

I've been a Nashville fan since they started in 98, and this is the worst team we've ever seen, and yes that includes the expansion teams. How Brunette still has a job today is beyond me. Brunette can not make adjustments, he refuses to mix the young players and Vets, the young players have an insanely short leash despite the Vets make the same mistakes over and over. If the younger players do get in the game, he only gives them 7-9 minutes a night. We are old, slow, beat up, and our coach refuses to adjust his system to the type of players he has. Trotz deserves blame for Tomasino and Fabbro ( Tolvanen happened before he was GM) but he moved players the coach refused to play. The Vets literally quit on Brunette in the 3rd last night in Ottawa. Marchessault made a comment about Brunette's line blendering. The had an optional skate and not a single Veteran player showed up. Brunette has lost the locker room.

Yep, and ol’ Bruno who was the PP coach before he took over from Q for the Panthers went 1 for 26 on the PP in two playoff rounds and the Cats only scoring 3 goals in that 4 game sweep the Lightning handed them. I think he’s better as an associate coach.

As a STH for the Preds, this is exactly what is happening. When your team isn’t scoring at this consistent of a basis, it’s time to play other guys. Just because you have a big name doesn’t give you the right to a starting spot - when you are at this low of a level. Del Gaizo and Parssinen continue to be scratched, Tomasino and Fabbro were scratched quite a bit. The lines have changed so much from game to game and even within games at such a pace that the players are now outwardly commenting. Those are coaching moves. Ownership isn’t getting rid of Trotz anytime soon, so this almost has to fall on the coaching at this point. Yes the players have blame and so does trotz. But those aren’t changing at this point. Everyone pointed to cap space with Wedgewood, and the others moving so maybe there’s a move or two left before the trade deadline? Until then, it’s almost got to fall on coaching.

There was a lot of hype about Wolf as the goalie of the future and coming into the season everything depended on him coz the Flames have very little attack. If Wolf lived up to the hype, they had a chance of being decent. If he was another Jon Gillies, then they were headed for a lotto pick. So far Wolf has been good. It's a lot to put on a rookie goalie so we'll see how he lasts through the season.

This was the main problem with San Jose before they plummeted into the basement. It's hard to be competitive when virtually your entire core roster is already 30+. The NHL in 2024-25 is also brutally unforgiving to teams who are slow. Older teams are going to naturally have slower players than average.

Not really. The problem was that Doug Wilson let Joe Pavelski and Chris Tierney walk to sign another offensive defensemen (Karlsson) when they already had Brent Burns. If they don’t sign Karlsson they’d probably be in a similar position in the standings to LA right now.

It was a team with an aging core with a couple of bad contracts, and they had no prospects or any future at all. It took Wilson getting sick for the team to finally move on from him, and bring in a new voice to finally say what the sharks needed to do. that it was time to move on from the old team and Rebuild.

The Preds (as a franchise) hate young players. They want "proven commodities" over 30 years old. The reason for that is that Trotz had already told both Askarov and Wedgewood that the plan was for Askarov to be the back up this season unless he just stunk it up. To be honest everyone seemed to forget that there were two Nashville Predators teams last season: the one going to see U2 and the one not going to see U2. People thought that their default setting was the team that played well beyond their ability down the stretch, instead of the actual default that was terrible before they called off their anticipated team activity. They let some solid depth pieces go that were more important than they thought and brought in some star players whose best years are behind them to add scoring, without address the huge hole at centre, and those new voices in the dressing room might not have meshed well with their new team.

Its one thing to miscalculate as a GM and build a win-now team without chemistry or merely underachieve. This is a win-now team with a league-worst record. Brunette has shown he can at least win in the regular season. This is 100% on Trotz.

Stamkos 5on5: 28 games, 1 goal, 2 assists, 3 points (-16). Yikes Well everybody but Lightning fans are surprised. There were many who said that Stamkos right now is basically PP merchant and there is no Nikita Kucherov in Nashville. Last year he had 40 goals but, 50% of them he scored during PP and he was -21. He's no longer a center and Nashville needs more C depth. Julien Brisebois was right "trading" Stamkos for Guentzel. Jake is phenomenal 12G-13A-25P in 25 games and he is +5. I believe that's the most points in NHL for players who changed their team during offseason.

Guentzel also is so solid defensively. Him and point together allow for kucherov to have more freedom. I love Kuch and he’s a wizard, but he’s also liable to make some crazy passes that lead to odd man rushes. But having Guentzel on that line really helps with both ends of the ice

The team in Florida is 10x better than the team in Nashville. He doesnt have much to work with in Nashville. Gretzky in his prime would have a tough time making Nashville a decent team. They disassembled a roster that made it to the WCF not so long ago. When they failed management gave up and traded pretty much everybody or let them go via free agency.

Awful, awful stuff from Trotz. One of the worst offseason's I can remember. One of Stamkos or Marchessault would be good complementary players on an already deep team/contender. Picking up both of them for the same team where they're both supposed to be primary players is not good or a recipe for success. They're both old and Stamkos was showing signs of being washed before this, if not for Kucherov, other than on the power play. I never bought them as contenders, just because they signed a bunch of 34 year olds. ''We got the Conn Smythe winner from 2019 and the Conn Smythe winner from 2023!''. I already didn't know what they were doing signing O'Reilly last year. They probably should have been blowing it up then.

There was a graphic last night that showed the two former Preds in Columbus and their production. Olivier would be 2nd in goals on the team and 5th among forwards in points [6th whole team]. Fabbro would be 2nd among defenseman in goals [T-7th whole team] and T-10th among the whole team for points, and 1st in +/- with +10 the next closest being Fedor Svechkov at a +2.

You can GM and put together a hockey TEAM or you can collect hockey cards like Barry Trotz. Filip Forsberg, Steven Stamkos, and Jonathan Marchessault are all similar right shot players. There is no need for all 3 of them as they don't fit on a team dynamic. Yes they are all good. It doesn't work that way. That's all. There are only so many situational moments in a game and only 1 puck to go around. Nice dual Tomasino stats for the Pens and Preds proving my point.

As a reminder, Tolvanen scored the first playoff goal in Kraken franchise history, and had 16 goals and 11 assists in 48 games that same season we picked him up. And who had Stephenson having a more successful season than Marchessault? I definitely didn't call that.

This exactly… I’m a STM sitting in the stands in Nashville and I actually think Stamkos is playing well. He’s skating well and finding open spots, but the puck never comes or if it does it is a garbage pass he can do nothing with. I see a lot of individuals at this point, but not a team. Trading a bunch of talent away that does well in new markets tells me it is a coaching problem.

This problem that you outlined seems decades old. I remember Canucks had this problem, if my memory is correct. I think the NHL will have to acknowledge that a player over 30 is going to be a liability. Second the NHL will have to form their teams around 75 percent younger players and 25 percent older player. The older players bring the skill, knowledge of the game, and experience, but to relying on them to be your scoring line is not a thing any more. But hey what do I know, I only watch the game occasionally.

The ONLY person I saw saying all those off season signings were a bad idea was former NHLer Rhett Warrener of Flames Nation. He essentially said the team was gelling at the end of the year, probably should have beaten Vancouver in the first round and clearly had great chemistry. Now you add in these old players who weren’t part of that and think just because it looks good on paper it’s going to work.

The dilemma he was facing was many of Nashville's high end prospects (Wood, Kemell, Molendyk, even L'Heureux) were arguably 3-5 years from being ready to produce at the NHL level. And that wasn't soon enough to help aging stars like Josi...and probably even Forsberg and Saros. So, if you're not going to try to compete with the last remaining members of your Cup run...what do you do with them? I guess he could have decided "they had their chance", keep Askarov, trade Saros...and just let Josi and Forsberg's careers fade into the distance. But instead, he opened his wallet and brought in talent to try to give them one more shot at a Cup. And so far, it's not working out. The biggest thing he needs to do is not panic and mortgage the future. Between the prospects in the system and the high draft picks that have been acquired...even if these players don't work out, just don't add to the dead cap that already includes Duchene and Turris (Still!) The only silver lining of these big names not working out is Trotz didn't have to give up any part of the future to bring them in. It could be a waste of money...but really, the rebuild isn't any worse off than it would have been. Honestly, these stars being awful might actually be helping it, haha. Just not how we expected.

Tire fire is an excellent term to describe Nashville's current situation. GM's banking on has been players to fix scoring is a lesson to be learned. As a Wings fan, I am happy Yzerman didn't get the Trouba deal done. We're hoping Kane can start finding the back of the net, but I'm not holding my breath.

Recency bias and player reputation are huge issues for GMs and commentators. While it is very difficult to do, GMs should trade out stars on the wrong side of 30 to get the best return possible. At least Nashville will have a high draft choice.

It’s also important that the reverse is true. Just because a player is playing badly on one team doesn’t mean a GM on another team isn’t going to pick him up and all of a sudden he improves.

This is exactly what I was saying in the off season. All the pundits were gushing about the roster and putting them in the tops of the power rankings, I looked and said I don't see it, sure maybe a few years ago, but not now. Too many older players. O'Reilly has been on a downward trend for years, same goes for Stamkos and March. Barry Trotz is a sucker, he overspent on aging players.

I'm 60 and remember 37 still being young. Thing is 37 is fine even for a physically demanding job like roofer or carpenter, but not for being a professional athlete in a physical sport like hockey. Some guys can continue to be strong at that age (Crosby, f'rinstance), but even they slow down. But most guys are cooked by that age because they don't start where the Crosbys do at 18.

I’m a bolts fan. Was so glad the bolts did not resign Stamkos at the comp level he wanted. Our gm took lots of flak, but as much as I loved stammer, he became a one-trick pony - PP from the circle. Not a two way player and was a liability on defense. Never in on the PK. But a great leader. Now Preds are stuck with a lousy contract. And Bolts have Guentzel who is younger, plays two way game and has better stats than stamkos. He even plays on PK occasionally. While the preds will likely get better as season goes on, their age is alarming - and not getting better.

Well the advantage they have is that on the 17th they play the Rangers, a team who currently not only has forgotten how to play Defense but seemingly the very concept of what Defense even is, so they might get some goals there.

You mention that there is something with the young players that they aren't either being given opportunities or they aren't being deployed correctly, and from a Nashville fan, both are correct. Young players are being disproportionately punished for mistakes and are getting benched and if they aren't getting benched then they are receiving minimal ice time. Both Fabbro and Tomasino, when they were played in Nashville were stuck usually in the bottom 6 or on the bottom pair. The current system just isn't willing or able to grow young players and doesn't seem to want to change because they want to try to force the playoffs. The off-season was fun, but I think it's time to cut bait and make the best of the situation they have.
