Jaxson Stauber. Watch him. He is 7 for 8 games played in his rookie career for NHL and 29 and 18 in the AHL. Score a goalie goal and shutout last year, first one in AHL history. He is the one to watch out for in Utah.

@@bucketophil You're right of course; plenty of time yet to kamikaze the season. But like many I'm sure, I am amazed that such a tandem has done so well so far. And as an Oilers fan, I'm SMFH that Stolarz was in our system not all that long ago and we tossed him.
@20thCenturyManTrad

@@bucketophil I'll just say, thus far, this tandem has paid dividends. The playoffs are where the real test begins, however, both Stolarz and Woll have had statement wins, something the Leafs have lacked for a long time. I'm always fearing the collapse, however, this tandem has been great.

"Minnesota penalty kill near the bottom at times this year" ya you could say that. In fact that is the one thing that is preventing the Wild from being realistic contenders in cup discussions. If they either focus on not having any penalties or dramatically improve their PK faceoff, watch out as they somehow will be the force no one saw coming. At minimum a 2-3rd round exit!

They did have Stolarz last year out playing every other back up in the league, i mean all the starters. I wanted to keep him and move Knight. Maybe Knight figures it out in 3 or 5 years but right now he isn't even a quality back up. His talent is there, but his head is all screwed up. You can see it in his body language and facial expressions after each goal given up. One goal is like the end of the world to him even when they are up 3-1 after that goal.

These advanced metrics stats for goalies look like rocket science if you don't know their meanings and how to read them. I honestly don't bother. Goalies don't go out on the ice thinking about metrics on the saves they make. They just go out there with one job, being the last line of defense(an Omega Supreme) in preventing the opponent from scoring goals. Goalies are either there to try to steal games or given their team a chance to win the game. Goalie SV% is down because goalie IQ of goalies has gone down quite a bit! Goalies are trained by repetition now with the VH/Reverse VH Butterfly technique. A lot of goalies are overusing it, going down too early and getting beat up high, just over the leg pads and on near-post shots. Goalies are cheating too much and getting burned for it at times. It used to be goalies were taught to stop the first shots, and if they stopped the rebounds that was like delicious gravy on the mashed potatoes! Now goalies are taught to stop the first shot and react to be in position for the rebounds. Some of them are looking bad in doing it! Goalies are bigger nowadays and they seem to overall play closer to the goal line. Goalies are not as aggressive coming out and challenging beyond the goalie crease, as compared to years past. Martin Brodeur use to say he hated the modern butterfly technique and good reason to why. He wasn't the biggest goalie, but he was one of the smartest goalies in his prime days. He was part of a select few goalies that studied the shooters and their shooting habits. Brodeur knew where you were going to shoot before the shooters shot the puck. He was very good in anticipating what type of shot would come in certain game situations. Hasek was good at it too, but also was a ridiculous great athletic goalie. He made it art that no one else could duplicate. Roy's art, was he was master of the original butterfly technique set forward by Tony Esposito. He made you shoot where he wanted you to shoot the puck. He gave the look of that is a good shot and then he took that look away. My point to these 3, plus some others goalies not mentioned, was their mental game(I call it the Goalie IQ, was top notch.). A good deal of today's goaltending, are dumb goalies. They don't use instincts/knowledge as much and just go on repetition of stopping certain type of shots their goalie coaches teach them to stop. Goalies are just becoming computer programs on how to stop pucks, like they are robots. Guess what, robots/computers are as dumb as the ppl who program them! The mental aspect of goaltending that was always important, has become lost!
