I was just thinking. My parents generation was called "THE GREATEST GENERATION". They knew how to make due. I am so happy to see that your generation has turned to homesteading. Growing, cooking what you grow, cooking from scratch! You are doing SO well for your family. Continued blessings to your family..

My parents were of the Greatest Generation. They grew up and served during rough times and made it trough. Being raised by them and supported by my dad's business, my mom always cooked from scratch and fast food was limited then and never became a part of our food. I am a product of my mothers example and only cook plain, real, food. Veggies and small protein. Those who have gone through ups and down in the economy know how to manage the issues and have come out of each one with greater knowledge and do not moan, point fingers, lay blame etc. for the times. We just buck up and get trough it. No chicken little in our gene pool. And so it goes. Joy Giles

Nothing better than being raised by parents of “The Greatest Generation”! Both my husband and I grew up that way. Today our children (both in their forties) say they remember rarely eating out when they were growing up except after their sporting events, which we all enjoyed. That was something our parents never did try! Both my husband and I loved cooking. (He’s gone now and I don’t cook a lot). Yet I have times when I want at least two veggies and home baked bread! (Which I did for my evening meal, the past evening. Being raised the way I did was the best ever! No other generation will ever equal that of The Greatest Generation!

The "greatest generation" were a bunch of misogynistic, homophobic, entitled racists to be factual. Lol of course the more you go back from present day humans were more engaged with the earth but don't call it the greatest generation you just sound uneducated no offense. Lol

Just an 85-year-old grannie checking in from Oregon. When I was a kid growing up we were little poor folks living on a little ranch and what you cooked for supper tonight is very similar to things that my mother would throw together for us to have. Because we had the livestock for meat the garden for vegetables and fruit trees we never went hungry. I really really enjoy watching your family. Keep it up and God bless.

Loving seeing buggy dig taters! She is so cute. You have done so much with the garden and eating supper directly from it is priceless. We are inundated with green beans right now in our back yard garden in La Mirada Near Whittier. The plants have passed the roofline and my hubby has to stake and pick beans from the roof! The tomatoes have blight but will give us a good harvest this year as well. Our potatoes are not ready yet but soon! Love your vlogs. keep it coming.

Oh my…. So many memories. I was a little toe head (white hair) like buggy. I have so many memories of helping (sorta) my mom in the garden. I was also the youngest of 5 kiddos. My dad farmed wheat, corn, and soybeans. Mom and us kids worked in the garden. The cores of the cabbage…we fought over them. So good with a salt shaker. We kept a salt shaker in a old bread wrapper at the end of the tomato row. Most of the time we ate out of the garden for lunch. Thank you so much❤️

Fab vlog! Buggy just melts my heart, she’s the same age as our first grand daughter. I’m undergoing lots of surgery this year, but next year Harper will be helping with the harvests 😀. She popped round for lunch yesterday and had to share her playhouse with a recovering hen that had a stroke! They played together happily and shared some crackers for lunch. I’m enjoying your channel more and more. It’s lovely to see homesteaders like you and Sow the Land, who aren’t thinking big business!! We live in a small terraced house an hour from London UK, and we grow loads of our food and keep hens. It’s a matter of priorities really. I think most people are very unaware of what’s coming, community is going to be so important in these difficult times. Xxx stay safe and keep doing love all,of it 🥰🥰🥰Ps your boys are precious and so well mannered.

I am in my 60s, I spent summers on my Grandpas farm when I was a kid. A local farmer raised 100 acres of pumpkins every year and had a huge pumpkin patch festival at the end of the summer, When it was over, I and my cousins would go there with my grandpa in the dump truck and we would buy several dump truck loads. We dumped them in a huge pile in the pig pasture as they can’t bite into them and every day we would go out and chop a few open for them. It made great pig food and saved a ton of money on feed! We were in northern CalIf so winters did not freeze

Allow me to introduce you to vegetable graves, now you have a tractor. Before there was climate-controlled storage this was used by farmers in the UK. Dig out a trench, line with straw, lay in your root vegetables (avoiding damaged and diseased ones) cover with more straw and then the soil you have dug out. This will protect from frost and keep your harvest for months.

Leeks are so healthy and versatile, when freezing, have some white part separated, they are great for replacing onions in many dishes. And don't chop off that much of the green part!

We are trying to grow more food this year too guys. I have always been amazed at how much you grow on your place. I love that you put those raised beds on the edge of the swales. Okay, Bret and Taylor and the younger boys and Corbin and Jack are the twin older boys. I'm an identical twin too. Lillianne is so cute and she wants to be helpful! Looks like a wonderful dinner from the garden Meg! Your pork too. Yay, you got some blueberries before Buggy ate them all. nice that you are growing animal fodder. Fantastic! Squash and those beets sound like a great idea. We store our apples in aluminum garbage cans in our breezeway for the winter and giving them to the goats and the chickens over the winter. We also pick corn out of the fields after the harvest and put them in a stall in our barn so the chickens can eat them over the winter. It keeps them happy and gives them something to do. I started my asparagus from seeds too. Those tomatoes do look really happy. Cool, cukes and scorpion peppers. Thanks for the garden tour Hollars!
