It doesn’t work!!! They just dig another hole!
@tommielourogers43273 жыл бұрын
They can’t dig a new hole if the chickens ate them when they came out to keep from drowning. However you might not want the chickens in that bed. Other possibilities are to train your boys to catch nonpoisonous snakes and let them go down the mouse holes. You could buy a havaheart trap and put lots of goodies like peanut butter, and chicken scratch in for bate. Then give the trapped mice to the chickens in another area. You can never have too many barn cats!

My sister gave me some amaranth seeds one year. I lived in the middle of downtown in my small hometown in a rural area. We lived less than a block from all 3 of the bars in town. I planted the amaranth around my front porch and was eagerly looking forward to harvesting them. They got about 8 feet tall and we're finely blooming. Then one night at about 1 am, I heard a drunk farmer singing "Hey Hey We're the Monkeys" off key and at the top of his lungs. By the time I got dressed and made it outside, he was pulling the last of my "pig weeds" out of the ground, and telling me: "That was a close one, but I got rid of them for you before they went to seed." I started to say something but he held up his hand and said: "No need to thank me." Then walked off continuing to sing.

Feeling for you guys with the rodent issue. There’s a mouse plague along Eastern Australia atm. Nothing seems to work or touch the sides on a massive scale. But the most quickest, humane way from what I’ve seen is the traps that electrocute quickly or the flip top rubbish bin (or trash cans) filled with water and peanut butter on the lid so they flip in. Best of luck.
@margarettt76753 жыл бұрын
We use a simple variation on this bucket trap - we fill a five gallon bucket 1/3 to ½ full of water, smear a thin, two inch long line of peanut butter just above the water line, and put a stick/board ramp up to the lip of the bucket above the peanut butter. Easy to empty into a grave. No chemicals or gore.

I know this is probably not something to help you this year, but when we redid our garden I brought the garden beds up off the ground far higher than yours to save my back. My soil level starts at 40 inches in my raised garden beds. The walkways around the plant beds is for the chickens to roam around and eat since we don't have the luxury of space for chicken tractor and such. This completely removed all my issues with weeds and bugs, because before i plant a crop each year, i turn the first 12 inches of soil out of the beds onto the ground, so as the chickens walk around in it, they fertilize it naturally and best of all... eat all the seeds and bugs in it. Then before I plant, I shovel it back into the beds, plant my plants and they do awesome. I stop having bug and weed problems because the soil is free of weed seeds and bugs are unable to reach the plant beds because chickens roam around the plant beds 360 degrees. If the chickens start jumping into the beds, I clip their wings and they can't make the jump up into them.

This is what they did when we had freezing temps earlier in the year. It wasn’t because our system can’t handle it. It’s because they’re controlling it. And they don’t want us on our own grid.

Best ideas so far in comments, easiest to try, 1 snap traps with peanut butter (alternative apples, worked in Mom’s house) 2) 5 gallon bucket trap with ramp, consult Sean Woods Mousetrap Monday channel for details, also he makes stables- like enclosures for his snap traps, 1 trap each slot, minimum 4, position against side. Mice are not deterred by multiple dead bodies, video proves that over and over. 3) Juicy Fruit gum, worth a shot. Similarly another channel I watched made covered offerings of dry oatmeal and seeds mixed with HydroCal powder to rid garage of overwinter rodents in vehicle 4) post season dig out bed to introduce hardware cloth and window screen on the very bottom, mouse only needs 1/4 inch to squeeze through. 5)there are vole/mole traps you can position around holes to fatally clamp moving critters in tunnels. Sean Woods again. 6) beware of measures that will cause mice simply to move to another bed. Some thought required. 7) maybe cats or terriers maybe not. Many cats are indifferent hunter. Maybe attract owls? Good luck!

Maybe try Nikand solar mole repellent from Amazon, for your underground garden pests. Supposed to keep moles, voles, snakes, & anything that burrows underground away. It's suppose to vibrate underground & chases them away, but a warning, you will here an annoying beeping sound, whenever you're near them. It drives me crazy! Lol. I can't say for sure if they work or not, but the Stivers Homestead uses them & says that they work.

Bummer. It's NOT fun to have pests destroy all your hard work!! we were having mice and rat trouble BIG TIME. We had to clean out the traps nearly every day. It took 2 1/2 years of my husband faithfully tending the traps and this year we seem to be free of them. YAY! Good luck !

Your squash is gorgeous. My squash and cucumbers are being attacked and eaten by those cucumber beetles. NASTY things they are. The adults fly so it’s hard to swish them but... everyone around here are out squishing so maybe they’re caught before they lay eggs at the stem root. But??? 😡 mine were a little bigger than yours and one day I went to do the chickens and 😳 leaves were chewed, and yellowed so bad 😡😡. Even DE didn’t help. 😪

Have yall thought about allocating some area for an egg-layer chicken run for making compost? Filling a trailer with leaf bags with the kids on the way back from town is kinda fun. Field mice: brutal but affective when you don't have predator snakes to solve it - plug all but one hole with rocks, adorn ppe/expel children, fill last hole with gas from flame weeder or whatever, wait a minute and light the hole. Now, that last step is not 100% needed as the gas usually kills them but it will burn off the excess gas. So, its brutal, but when you have 1 bed housing mice, next season you'll have many beds housing mice. Thx for the vids.

UGH... On the mice issues! I was just googling ways to get rid of the little b**tards! I am so sick of solutions mean buying something like those noise things...my strawberries are finally getting ripe ad now 3/4 of them r half eaten...😫 I like raised beds..." sort of"....but there sure r a lot of issues I have never had with my in ground garden. Oh well....from now on I will just plant what mice don't like in them

Enjoyed that 😃 Just looked up Amaranth on the internet (I’ve heard of it but didn’t know exactly what it was) and it says it’s banned in the US because it’s a suspected carcinogen!!! I’m in UK.

I am green with envy over that garden!! :) We had Very cool rainy weather here in Oregon for the last of May and first of June... I am just now feeling comfortable setting my huge tomato plants out in the garden... finally evening temps in the 50's and not 40's... :) Enjoy your harvest!!

You're doing fine on planting time. In your area, you can still plant most things and get a harvest. I lose a lot to weeds, but don't stress over it. I think y'all are doing a great job! All your kids are good and everyone's alive :-) Spring and summer are hard, and I'll bet you're all a little weary. My husband and I usually argue more during gardening season because of all the work, never feeling like we've done enough and just being hot and tired. I hope you guys give yourselves extra breaks, hot baths (with the AC on!), and some fun time. You're doing enough, trust me!
