I saw once "sorry I can't remember where" this homesteader ran her duck through the garden to get all the snails and slugs. They didn't eat the plants and don't scratch everything up because ducks don't dig like that. Might be something to think about for your ducks. Everything really is looking good there/

Love what you guys are doing. I'm a Native North Carolinian, and I think it's awesome to know that so many homesteaders has chosen NC. By the way I think it would be a great idea to let the meat chickens out of the tractor and just keep them in the fence. They've grown so much it seems crowded.

When his people get too far away from him he starts running really fast to get to them. I had no idea turkeys could run that fast!!! You need to get a small fenced area that you and he kids can get in and really see how really friendly your little turkeys will be and turkeys love to eat bugs!

I just started watching different homesteading videos. I just came across yours and watched this one. Please don't get me wrong because i know nothing about raising chickens but your feeder chickens and ducks are in such a small mobile coop for so many. You said they are nothing special just for food but you said you wanted them to have a good life. Just from watching a few other homesteaders they have big grazing areas for them and they have a separate place for the ducks which to me if you had a large fenced area for them all would be sufficient enough. I know nothing on homesteading other than watching other videos so please don't take this wrong you guys are awesome and doing a great job. Garden looks awesome and i am loving your hairy pigs.
@Bennybob014 жыл бұрын
You have a good point and I’ll do my best to answer. We keep them in the tractors for protection from the owls and hawks. We’ve talked about just letting them run around in a fenced area but the problem is they have been too small and could easily just walk through the netting and now they are bigger we could probably let them out without worrying about them escaping but we still have hawks to deal with during the day and these things don’t watch for anything but food. We are still in the beginning stages and this is our first run of meat birds I’m sure we will improve as time goes on. Hope that kinda addresses you’re thoughts.

One tidbit for advice if you leave the trees slightly taller when you cut them they will sprout and the next rotation the animals will eat the coppiced top and brush against the tree trunk to scratch themselves. Eventually this’ll help loosen the stump to be pulled out a lot easier.

Looks like you have some muscadine vines in the pig paddock Good for you!! They make a really good jam, and you can even try winemaking. it's a real blessing to have them on your property!! According to Ashley Cobb, clinical dietician at WakeMed, muscadines are especially high in the antioxidants resveratrol and ellagic acid. ... “Muscadines are also fat-free, high in fiber, low in sodium and an excellent source of manganese - they're a perfect addition to a healthy diet!” said Cobb.
