Sweetpotato harvest 2021 is here! Each year is a fun dig for buried treasure to see what we actually got. This year we experimented growing sweet potatoes in a 5 gallon bucket.

Cool harvest guys I just love how the boys are so into helping out and excited to see what they helped raise. I hope you and Meg realize the best crop you got going is the future homesteaders you are raising. Just stop and think how far ahead of the curve they will be from where you had to be do unhappy with life to start. They already know and feel the connection to earth food and life that God gives. Great job that's why I enjoy watching you guys. Keep up the good work and God bless you all

It's really interesting that the compost end of the sweet potato bed produced more impressive foliage but smaller, paler, softer 'taters. I wonder if it's the case that stressing a plant just a little often leads to less foliage but more abundant fruiting -- as though the plant is thinking, "This might be a lean year; better set more fruit (or tubers or slips) so we can try again next year."

I failed to plant my slips. They're still sitting on my window sill in the kitchen. I believe I'm going to keep taking care of them there until spring, then I'll plant them. I'm thinking instead of planting the slips in an actual bed. I'll make a long soil hill down the side of the fence, and plant the slips there, and see what happens. Nice sweet potato harvest!!! We love sweet potatoes as well.

have you thought about growing sweet tatters in a stack of old tires ? I tried it and got a bushel from one stack of five tires . You can cut the inner half of the sidewalls and turn them inside out so they will stand taller . fill the first tire with dirt or compost and plant your slips , when they have grown tall enough to peek above the next tire , fill it with more dirt . Continue until your stack is four or five feet tall . The vines will cover the tires and look like a bush . At harvest time just knock the tires over , no digging .

Put some olive oil into a shallow baking pan and cut the tators in rings about an inch thick. Don't peel them. Bake until bottoms of the circles are brown on the bottom. You wont ever want another whole baked one. It's like eating a dessert and they are sooooo good. It brings out the taste of them. OH I forgot, sprinkle with some salt before baking.

The happy family 🌟. ❤️ Halfway thru the growing season, cut back the vines. It allows the energy to be put into the potatoes (to grow). Also, those vines are extremely nutritious for people as well as livestock &chickens. Sautéed in butter, garlic, salt & added to omelets- YUM. Somewhat like spinach. Great vid 👍👍❤️ (sorry, already wrote my comment prior to watching your whole vid).

Sweet potatoes love bad soil. They love clay soil and hard soil. They thrive on awful soil and neglect! They hate nitrogen-rich soil; it makes them grow all leaves and no tubers. But they can help loosen up and break up compacted soil, so they’re good for those kinds of spots in your garden, especially new ground.
