I love seeing reactors get to Angel. Everyone knows something is up, but not what it actually is, and the curse. The curse is fascinating. They did explain turning in the pilot. Buffy: first they suck your blood, then you have to suck theirs. It's a whole big suckfest. So bites don't turn you unless they feed you their blood after.

These Buffy reactions are so fun! I get so excited every Friday. I would love it if you guys also watched Angel! It's such an amazing show! There are a few crossover episodes between the two shows. It has a bit of a darker vibe than Buffy which I loved and really just fit the character. It really develops Angel more as a character beyond just the 'mysterious love interest'. And there are some other awesome characters that I don't want to spoil who have some of the best character development I've seen in a show. Plus - more David Boreanaz!! which is always a good thing lol

Yes! Please also do Angel, the series! He goes through a lot of changes, but this is Buffy's show, so there's not as much for him here. On his own show, he becomes a full-blown character. Plus, there's a lot of other Buffy characters who show up on Angel and the full story is played out on both shows. The Buffyverse is 254 episodes.

I love that Darla said "you love someone that hates us." That told Buffy that Angel does love her, because Darla has no reason to lie on that point. The kid is a vampire. That's a demon speaking with the kid's voice. He died and was brought back as the Anointed, while the crazy fanatic guy was brought back to fool the Slayer into thinking she killed the Anointed. While we don't see it when they kiss in Buffy's room, Buffy was presumably wearing the cross then as well, and it probably brushed against Angel's flesh, startling him into vampire face. In the kiss at the end, he was prepared for the shock and just endured the burn. For episode 8...Giles and Jenny interaction is the best part. Technopagan!

Another excellent reaction. You are both starting to get the pacing and style of the show. The first season is belittled by many fans but the writers, actors, and producers were all trying to jell and get to their shared visions. The demon in the computer story seems dated but in 1997 the concept that something evil could control and corrupt teenagers was sci-fi. There was no social media, no Google, and teenagers hung out at the mall to catch up with what was happening. This was a warning episode that sadly was on the mark and like so many of the early Buffy episodes, the metaphors were ahead of its time. Good pick up on the strength and power Buffy shows when she is angry and focused. An overlooked part of the show is how Buffy becomes stronger, a better fighter, and a clever warrior as she ages and trains. Buffy will learn from her battles, retreats when she is in potential real danger, and always come back prepared to win. Buffy is a teenager with much to learn but unlike many other characters she will apply what she experiences to make her a better person and Slayer. Enjoy your channel and keep up the great content.

One of the only things I feel they didn't touch on enough was that in these earlier episodes we learn that the Master (and Angel, and Darla, etc) are members of the Order of Aurelius, and I think it was implied that that's the top of the heap in vamp hierarchy, but they don't really discuss that again. We get to see other orders that seem to have very little to do with vampires but they drop the whole Aurelius thing pretty quickly and I would have loved to know more about how that works. Can you rise up through the ranks? Are you screwed if someone of a different order turns you?

See, it was the demon/vampire Angelus who committed all of those atrocities, not the person who was living before being turned. We’ll call him Angel for the sake of this comment. So the curse actually punishes the human soul (Angel) for the crimes the demon (Angelus) committed, not the vampire, since vampires/demons don’t and never have, had souls. If it helps any, think of a soul as the conscience.

Angel didn't have much influence on Buffy - generally, they arranged things in such a way that you won't lose much if you only watch one of the shows. However, there are bits and pieces that would only be understandable if you watch both.

Angel is part of the Buffy Expanded Universe. The show has some limited crossover with Buffy, but it's its own thing. It is definitely worth a watch for expanding the Buffy lore, and there ARE occasional crossover storylines and guest appearances. The ideal timing to start watching Season 1 of Angel would be when you start Season 4 of Buffy.

Angel is one of the best episodes of S1. His back story and flashbacks are one of the great things about the Buffyverse. We now know Angel is a vampire, but of course a very different one as he has a soul, but is tortured by his past deeds. As I said before you are so enthusiastic about this show, and is it just gets better and better. The Seasons following have a much bigger budget, and incredible writers with better special affects and cinematography. Enjoy your journey. This episode I Robot You Jane always ranks very low on the favourite fan episodes which is rather unfair. It was really way ahead of its time regarding the potential dangers of online dating and social media. Willow is obviously very green, innocent and vulnerable as up to this point she has no romantic experiences. Great foreshadowing here again in this episode ( will not mention here ) as could be construed as spoilers. As has been said S1 is quite rough, but great perception here of how the future is now with the internet basically controlling everyone's lives.

This whole idea about Angel being who he is is both almost philosophical and troubling. That he has done what he has done before, not as himself, but under the vampiric spell. How many of the killers irl have used that 'I wasn't myself then' trope. Many famous court cases claim outside influence. Covert experiments, like in many shows, often point at lab-induced altered states, bypassing the human soul. Then leaving the culprit suffer the aftermath. I like comparing the contrast between the Buffyverse and real life.

Watching Angel isn't required to watch Buffy, but I hear it adds some to it. I personally opted out because I'm... I'm just not an Angel fan. I think there's a recommended time to start watching Angel though to best sync it up with the events of Buffy. You're not close to that time yet. I'm pretty sure that's like... season 4, maybe?

Thank you, Cody, for saying Romani instead of gypsy despite what this series said. I have Romani blood, and I try to spread awareness that "gypsy" is a racial slur and not okay. A show set in the late '90s, it makes sense that they used it, but it might make people nowadays think the word is alright to use, and it's not. Same with saying that someone "gyped" [jipped] you when you were cheated in a deal.

As far as Joyce not realizing Angel went back upstairs, remember this is Sunnydale. People there have inbuilt blinders to what's going on. And excuse me, but I can't believe the guy who has seen the show needs to have Angel's Curse explained to him by the first time watcher🤣🤣🤣. I do find id extremely odd that Giles, the Watcher, the Expert on all things supernatural, is always initially dismissive when Buffy brings up a concern (like in the Pack) and Giles is all "poo poo, I'm sure there's a normal explanation"

I agree with others that by the time Angel starts you won't need us to tell you to watch it, but here's my vote anyway. Note that the show does have a different tone, though. Buffy is about her, her friends, and doing the right thing even when it's hard and that remains true through all seven seasons. Angel is darker thematically, exploring shades-of-grey morality, if the ends justify the means, and the self-serving nature of redemption. Angel also goes much deeper into the mythology/ lore of this universe.

if you guys are pressed for time then watching Angel isnt necessary. although its worth noting that the Angel series has one more season after Buffy ends, so chronologically after Buffy season 7 and Angel season 4 end at the same time, Angel season 5 happens so its the furthest into the Buffyverse on tv. the rest of the story happens in comic books. i guess it depends how far you guys want to go.

Have to point out that “the curse” makes zero sense. If Angel’s soul is innocent, and wasn’t responsible for anything that Angelus did, how does punishing his innocent soul accomplish anything? The demon part would be ecstatic at getting a chance to see Angel be tormented for all the stuff he did.. This doesn’t change my opinion that Buffy is the best television ever filmed, just have to let ppl know that..

Luckily for the master, vampires are a pretty renewable resource. The way I handle lore in Buffy (and really in general) is the same way I think about history, it’s biased by the people who recorded it, who is reciting it and some details are just lost to time and translation.
