We finally take a crack at this bonnie Celtic classic, just in time for St. Patrick's Day 🍀We know it's Scottish in origin, but we feel like it still captures that essence we're all after these days regardless of borders 💚 How will you be spending your St. Paddy's '21?

This is actually quite a sad song, but all the more beautiful for it. The perspective is that of a Scottish soldier, captured with his brother at the Battle of Culloden, a disastrous defeat for the Scots. Their English captors gave them the choice of which would be executed and which would be allowed to return home. Thus, the "you take the high road and I'll take the low road, an' I'll be in Scotland afore ye" is from the perspective of the one who chose to die instead of his brother, as he states that his heart and soul will be there immediately when he is killed, to dwell there in peace forevermore. At the end of the chorus, he laments that "me and my true love will never meet again on the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond," meaning that although his soul goes to the lands of his youth, he will never again see the woman he loved. Note: Thank you Tanner Hurst for pointing out a couple details I missed.
@Alornai3 жыл бұрын
The song has been altered so many times between its creation and its first recording, so the "true meaning" is still very speculative. :) The soldier story is a pretty common theory though! Maybe one day we'll uncover some more evidence as to how the original song came to be and if/how it got altered by time & by oral sharing/misremembering. :)

The way I was told the story it was two captured brothers, not two random soldiers, and they were given the choice of who would live and who would die. Rather than draw straws or something, one brother volunteered to die for his brother.

Absolutely enchanting version that has me in tears traversing sweet childhood memories through a 50yr time machine. I can hear my Seanair, long since returned to his beloved homeland, with his gravely, deep Scottish voice and Nain's clear, high voice singing to 1 another as if it was yesterday. It will forever be sung in our homes. My children are now singing it to their bairns. Thank you for taking me back to beautiful memories that are truly never far from me. 💓🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸 (Edited to change out the English words for granddad and grandma to the Scottish and Welsh words that I knew my dear grandparents as. It just didn't seem right when I reread what I said about them with the wrong names.😔😊)

Okay I have a very niche memory of this song. A camp in the mountains, where we stayed for 3 weeks, and went on hikes every week, and we did crafts and games and went swimming in a river, and there were cows and goats and two cats, and every night, the counselors would sing us to sleep, and the best feeling I’ve ever felt is waking up on a misty mountaintop at this camp, and this song is one of the songs that stuck with me from that camp, and I know that I’ll never experience anything quite like this camp ever again. I haven’t heard this song since then, and so this is quite a special song to me
