I am kinda middle of the road on a lot of this. I dont go 650+ and I dont shoot a single bevel. I have messaged Ranch Fairy several times and he has ALWAYS gotten back with me and answered my questions and been more than helpful. I build my own arrows. nock tune and spin the inserts to get good arrow flight. I shoot 125 grain brass inserts with 125 grain magnus or slick trick broadheads. The total arrow weight is around 525-535. I have not had a single issue with this setup

Wow, mine is almost identical and i dumped an elk with that setup. 150 grain magnus 75 grain brass insert, 300 5mm arrow

That right at the sweet spot of arrow weights. I'm right at 550 myself after all the tuning and it's dead on at 20 and 30 yards. I haven't had an animal in front of me yet to actually shoot one in the last 2 seasons. After shooting magnus stingers and having success and switching to a single bevel Grizzly I was disappointed how dull the Grizzly was after just shooting my target to check the flight. I will be trying the new magnus single bevel this year

Man I still shoot 455gr arrow with both fixed (QAD Exodus) and mechanical grim reaper fatal stealing deer elk and hogs and have had awesome luck with it I haven't lost an animal in 12 years. I did pick the weight up from 380 to 455 and do believe it helped me all around

Both of y'all have really helped me out personally and since I've switched to heavy arrows and broadheads I have seen all my deer go down. The BEST advice I ever heard was from TBone....shoot the heavest arrow you can get as long as it goes at least 260fps and use whatever broadhead makes you confident.

Except if you're a woman with a short draw length and you're never going to be able to shoot 260 fps.... So, that advice cannot be universal to all bowhunters.

Always tried to have the highest poundage bow and lightest arrow and always wondered why my arrow would basically stop in the deer. Went to Ranch Fairy tunning, 65 lb and 600grains and never looked back. I hated sighting in my bow because of "tuning" my bow every year. Heavy setup and Fairy tuning makes it much more enjoyable! Deer always fall in sight and bow is much quieter! Thanks again all!!

600 grain on whitetail is way overkill. Sacrificing alot of speed as well!. 440ish to 500 gr is perfect weight imo especially for trajectory as well

@@nathangroseclose2071 The whole heavy arrow isn't new to me. I grew up shooting browning storm and 2219 arrows. Yeah they were slow but they hit hard and never had issues with pass throughs and hitting bone if on accident. Ranch just gave me a reality check of why that was and why bow hunting was so simple. I never worried about "tunning" my bow all the time. I shot it and used what worked with the bow not tune the bow to the arrow. I just got wrapped up in sales pitches and the need for speed. Btw no one looks down on someone using a 30 06 on a deer when they could use a 243. So why is this any different?

Enjoyed the conversation. My local bow shop closed down several years back and i felt like i was alone in navigating how to make my arrows fly better. I always had issues with arrow flight anyways. Even with my proshop tuning my bow. Thankfully i found a small KZbin channel called thr ranch fairy and through troys videos i was able to drastically improve arrowflight. I also had interest in heavy arrows and this guys testing helped me answer some of my own questions. I like the fact that he is still learning, and excited about learning. I have had correspondence with Troy and he has been a great help, and he is a great guy. There is definitely two sides to the argument, and until i start seeing heavy arrows with robust broadheads start bouncing off animals or flipping and flapping on impact while penetrating thin skinned game only a few inches ( likr most peoples setups do) , i think ill stick with adult arrows.

Have great results with 550 grain and 790 grain. Multiple deer with each. All with single bevels. This year im building some 625 with single bevel. Cant wait to use them. Keep up the good content!

I appreciate all of you! Both of your channels have helped me in my archery journey. I moved up from a 410 grain setup at 55 lbs last year to a 60 lb setup using 530 grain arrows this year. Did I lose speed? Absolutely. I am now at about 253 fps but the arrows are hitting like a freight train and the penetration on the target is consistently at 7” plus. I have the Magnus Buzzcuts & the “foamer” as a fixed blade just made more sense either way less failure points. Sadly, I just found out I didn’t draw this year but I am looking forward to practicing for next year. Keep up the great work!

I am so glad I started watching y’all’s videos on heads and sharpening. I swapped last year to a 150 grain single bevel. And smoked a 5 1/2 year old 10 point in the shoulder and ended up punching through and heart shooting him. Head would still shave when I found it. Thank y’all so much!!!!

30 years ago my Dad was shooting 125 grain Snuffer broad heads with Easton XX75 aluminum arrow and 5 inch vanes. It was the best 15 yard set up you could find. When bows got faster and technology happened, longer range shooting became more of a thing. With his old setup, accuracy became an issue and we went to light carbon arrows and expandables. Seems like technology has allowed us to come back full circle. Everything you have mentioned makes sense to me. Good video. I still like my 2 blade rage.

The talk on thinking an animal is perfectly broadside lines up with my experience last year. Thought I had a doe at about 8 yards broadside and she was actually quartering to me slightly and I hit guts and liver. Just as they described as well. From me having an opportunity to draw and then take my shot was 5 seconds or less.

I really enjoyed the “put your ego aside” part. It’s true. The results you get are only good for the medium in which you tested. They aren’t transferable. We should be testing in animals if possible (and legal, etc). Thanks for the clarity!

I love how ive come up with this in my own head 2013 after i lost 1 aiming for that 10 ring you shoot at a target and she ducked the string and hit the top end / black hole. Next doe i shot was quartering away vital v i hit both lungs and cut the top part of the heart completely out of the sack and main arteries. Ever since then i have talk about aiming in the vital v but i called it the heart shot . Till now . This method is astounding the difference in tracking.

Ranch Fairy videos got me interested in building my own arrows …2 seasons ago I got to test my work …620 gr arrow complete pass through on a mature buck ….arrow penetrated so much I could not find it in the dirt ….buck piled up in 40 yards ! ….If only I knew about heavy arrows when I was young I’ve lost 3 real good bucks due to lack of penetration over the years

My doe last year was heart shot with my bow and ran 20yds before she dropped. My buck I hit with a clean heart shot with my rifle and ran 80-100yds. Both were double lung heart shots. It’s crazy to think a good placed rifle shot deer ran farther than a good placed bow shot. Proof that no two “identical” shots end the same. My buck the year prior was double lung and we spent 4 hours and 300yds tracking him to find him bedded down struggling but still alive.

I'm just speculating that the adrenaline dump from the rifle shot deer carried him further for longer after the shot. Or he just had a greater tenacity by nature and a greater will to survive. It's been so unpredictable in my experience as well. They're crazy animals.

Agree with the Vital V on broadside shots 100 percent, BUT, on shots that are quartering away, you have to start aiming further back or you're gonna start having "one lunger" hits, especially if they drop AND roll. It was hard to tell the shot angle on Zack's most recent pig loss shot, but straight on, it looked a like a boiler room pass thru, but if it was quartering away, could have been a "one lunger". I have tracked several deer like that for hundreds of yards thinking I had a deer down, and never recovered. True- the arrow redirect from bone ricochetes, and arrow impact at the drop and roll away reaction, can create some unmatched entrance and exit holes.

@JimRyser I have a Jackal that I occasionally use. It's a little painful after shoulder and elbow reconstruction surgery is all. I tend to hunt more with my firearms at longer distance propped up on my stand. I hunted with a PSE @ 70# for years, now I can't.

I liked the point made about how the skin, muscle, and bones move as the deer runs. And the point made on how a deer may not bleed out of a hole (regardless of placement or size of the hole). I made a 60-80 yard shot on a buck with a 30-06 slightly angled towards me (about at the point of the “V” that was shown in this video) the deer ran like hell and after running about 40 yards I could not see it anymore. Growing up it was instilled in me to never take a front on or quartering toward shot so I was really worried I had missed or shot the brisket. I did not see the deer go down so I waited an hour to go check around where the deer was standing. My heart sank as I did not find hair, nor a drop of blood and I could see his running tracks in the snow. I backed out and told my dad everything I saw, where I held the crosshair, and how I felt that I had missed it. Without any hesitation he said that that deer was dead so reluctantly we went back to where I shot it and followed the running tracks for about 60 yards and found that deer piled up dead. STILL NO BLOOD except underneath the deer. It appeared that the deer died mid stride (not bedded). The shot went in right at the forward arm joint (right at the point of the “V”) and never exited. I’ve never seen the inside of a deer so mangled, everything turned to soup. If it were not for my dad I may not have ever looked for that deer and I have never had another track job like that since.

I am in the "in between" right now. Used to shoot lots of mechanicals...... Had mixed results... Started shooting more of a mixture the last few years but more often than not a good quality cut on impact solid head . Just doing that has had good results . So probably keep moving in your direction. I do have a 32 inch draw with pretty heavy poundage so get good penetration most of time no matter what I'm shooting lol

I've followed RF for years. Never understood FOC. The archery shops could never "explain" FOC. They just talked it. Sold only 8%FOC arrows and sold to the chart specs. I'm just an old FK'r bowhunting 40 years. I was the shop slut until I started understanding FOC and building "adult arrows". Thanks Troy for all of your content. Apollo 300/100 gr sleeved insert/ 125 gr single bevel Tough Head BH. Bare shaft@7' and at 20 yds. Stacking bare shafts like tooth picks in a box. BH tune, lateral adjustment to my rest, BH/FP on top of each other. A daunting task to achieve perfect arrow flight? Yep. Worth every minute of effort. Nay-sayers....take up golf, it might be easier.

I know you guys like your single bevels, but I shoot a crossbow because I have torn rotator cuffs. Man do I love Tooth of the Arrow 150grn 4 blades. They do work for bows, Do it Yourself Hunter uses them. Ranch Fairy broad heads look like VPA's which work awesome. Last year I put a TOTA through the heart, he trotted to 30 yards and dropped.

I cant explain how many times ive had this conversation with people! Pick a set up for when your stomach is upset because it didnt go the way you expected because its going to happen! Perfect shots just about anything will kill a deer but sh&t happens so narrow it down to eliminate as much as you can

I am a huge fan of Dan Fitzgerald and i know he used to shoot about an 80 pound bow i think if not more and he would use an 80 or 100 grain muzzy and he definitely killed deer but in several videos you can see the arrow hit and just immediately stop and not pass thru. That right there tells you that high poundage bows and light arrows doea not mean it will penetrate.

Came into archery as a young teen 20 years ago with my dad we were shooting heavy aluminum arrows at the speed of smell with fixed broadhead and we were killing deer. then without question we went to the carbon arrows and mechanical broadheads. We needed the fastest bows. We were shooting so accurate we wouldn’t shoot the same dot twice out of fear of ruining an arrow. BUT THE DEER WERE NOT DYING ANYMORE! We weren’t getting pass throughs and lose a ton of energy through deflection.

So in the video you touch on mechanical’s and deflection when the deer is “rolling”. I seen a prime example of this in a Levi Morgan video with Ben Roethlisberger. Check out the video and watch the buck Levi shoots. Where the arrow enters and exists is crazy and that’s from a ground blind.

The fact that more people don't necropsy their animals is something I've been shocked to find out about lately. I've been hunting for 14 years now and all but a handful of deer I've killed I've looked at what the bullet/broadhead did. I've always found it so interesting, and maybe that's where my opinions on bullet and arrow setups comes from. Surprisingly I like copper/bonded bullets that penetrate extremely deeply, and yet for some reason prefer arrows between 460 and 500gr with either sevr mechanicals or 3/4 blade fixed heads.

I got a doe last season with my bow, basically shooting straight down at about 17yd to target. Severed the spine (cracked a vertebrae) and exit wound came out behind the scapula. I truly believe that shot was only possible because I was using single bevel and a heavier total arrow weight. (About 640gr and 19-22% FOC) Can't remember exact numbers, I have since changed my entire setup for this upcoming season.

Crazy how worked up everyone gets about arrow setups. Throw your ego out the window and just see what you can learn from. Nobody cares if you shoot X or Y brand. Just acknowledge what you are doing, using a sharp (maybe?) stick to kill an animal. Too many people chewing on nonsense pushed from the outdoor industry at large from all aspects. This type of content is the only thing out there diving into the why/how to improve based on their experiences. Some folks may have better marketing than products...

Excellent content and open-minded discussion. Arrow weight seems a no-brainer to me. Shoot the heaviest arrow you can that gives you an acceptable trajectory. Then top that joker with the SHARPEST and toughest broadhead you can get to fly well. I also found that my bow is quieter at the shot with a heavier arrow. Seems like an easy choice for hunting. Thanks for the great content.

It’s a great idea, but If the idea is to use the shoulder blades in testing, unfortunately, Troy has talked about this before. Once an animal dies, the bones begin to change. They become more brittle over time and they quickly become an irrelevant test medium. That’s why he has done some testing on freshly killed pigs.

You never completely know when looking at the arrows. Shot one 2 years ago. Recovered my arrow and it was straight green. Backed out. My buddy asked it I looked where it went. Walked to the edge of the path where it was and it was dead 20 yards down the trail just out of sight. Shot was perfect double lung but severed the esophagus. I've seen a LOT of variables in my 700+ depredation kills in the last 2.5 years and no 2 kills have had the same reaction. I prefer a 450 grain finished arrow with a 100 grain single bevel at 311fps in my current setup. Currently shooting Trifecta and love it.

What I’d like to see is a good single bevel broadhead on a 420 grain arrow and a 650 grain arrow and see the difference in penetration. In the same spot of two similar pigs. I wanna know if it’s the weight of the arrow or all the broadhead?

I shot sub 400 grain setups for years. After the second arrow stopped in the scapula, I switched to a much heavier setup. Shooting a stiff spined Easton Sonic with a high foc and around 550 grains of total arrow weight. Have yet to have an arrow stop since the switch.

I use a crossbow and am curious if you think any of the info you included in this would pertain to me and other xbow users as well? This year I'm going to try a new setup with a total arrow weight of 592 and the new magnus single bevel 150. I'll let you know how my season goes and how i like this or if i change it completely by the time the season starts.

I agree 100% to testing on a real animal, as well as to the heavy setups and fixed blades. The most recent test comparison you did y’all’s setups last…. After the shoulder was weakened…. Prove it and do the first 3 shots with y’all’s setup in a row then test those mechanicals. FYI I am on the same page as THP but show the non-believer’s first!

I shot 2 bucks 2 days apart from the ground last year broadside 18yrds with a Rage mechanical. Both double lung, pass through shots. No reason to change right? Wrong, I'm changing arrows and going to a single bevel cut on contact 150gr head this year. The odds of last years' experience repeating itself are next to nothing. My hunting buddy thinks I'm nuts, but after listening to the data and experience from THP and the Ranch Fairy, I think it's a no brainer. I expect to make mistakes and I want to send the best projectile I can to make the cleanest kill I can. That's our responsibility as hunters.

My brother, shooting a Rage Hypodermic, shot a 3yr-old 8pt. Double lung, partially quartered away....the only bone it hit was a rib on entry. BENT the blade! We've never shot a mechanical since. I know there are some 'olay' ones out there that are decently durable, but I'm not gonna roll the dice. Got into tuning my bow properly now, so I can get fixed blades flying properly every time. Don't regret it one bit!

@@WMBCS False. Otherwise, there'd be a full 3+gal of blood in every blood trail before you find the deer. Deer die from suffocation or organ failure: Inability to breathe, if shot in the lungs, or lack of oxygen to the brain if shot in the heart....or organ failure if gut shot.

In my experience, the mechanical Broadhead was initially not the problem. The smaller 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 inch cutting diameter 3 blade mechanicals were extremely deadly and penetrated well. However, when everyone switched to these gigantic, 2 blade 2 to 2 1/2 inch cutting diameter blades..... That's when all the penetration went away. And we started loosing well shot animals. But i am never going to tell someone my way is better or the only way. Thanks for all the insight on other Arrow/Broadhead options.

Last year i hunted with 600 grain arrow single bevel. Killed a nice doe, arrow went through and another 10 yards beyond her. I have pros and cons. I think it is all situational based. In Michigan especially in beginning of fall is dense woods, being so thick in the area's i hunt. a heavy arrow can be really beneficial, short distance shots, etc. Its awesome. However, as the woods open up, leaf's are gone, but you still have all those branches, now my trajectory is terrible and i'm limited with a heavy arrow, it sucked. Didn't realize how much it would affect me. But overall, it really depends on the shots you want and where you decide to aim. If you aim to far forward, heavy arrow with single bevel is really good. But if you happen to hit to far back, i always prefer a mechanical for a larger hole. Again, were talking about what-ifs with single bevel vs mechanical, because i'm sure everyone has experienced both scenario's. Single bevels have a less chance of failing for sure. Problem with Mechanicals is, you have to be pretty knowledgable about why one is going to work like junk and the other is going to work good. I have lost deer on a single bevel shot by just barely missing the heart and have lost deer on a mechanical due to hitting the upper bone, what percentage are you willing to deal with. Giant bucks have been killed by both, due to shot placement and knowing what your arrow is capable of. Now FOC, you can build a light arrow with good FOC, FOC is important.

As hunters I can definitely say at least for deer hunting we are taught to shoot too far back in my experience. If you are using a compound bow, it would be best to shoot a fixed blade head. if you are using a modern crossbow that is shooting 400 ft./s I would say to use a expandable, if you take human error out of the equation, most heads will perform like they’re supposed to, but if you were taking shots like the Hunting public, you’re going to want to shoot a fixed blade head because of the bone contact if you wait for a better shot like you’re supposed toexpandable head will work for you now keep in mind most of my expandable kill shots have been with a crossbow that has more power than a compound bow

One thing I have noticed in my 40 years of hunting is that Gun hunters are more interested in bullet performance than Archers are about broadhead performance. Or at least seem to pay more attention to it. I know a lot of gun hunters that when you ask them about bullet performance will show you a box of recovered bullets, talk about their testing, and can show you bullets that failed and they retested in media and can describe why it fails. Archers seem to pick a favorite broadhead and just stick with it or worse yet switch every year. But don't talk about any real testing. (and I'm just as guilty of that mentality)

What is your opinion on the study that came out showing that even during the rut, most deer (including bucks) moved between 10 AM and noon, contrary to belief that they were mainly early morning movers? Are you going to stick with the old ways of hunting early morning and evening? Or try some hunts during the mid morning to lunchtime hunting? TIA

A arrow on the heavier side always made sense to me because when I take my 300WM out to distance, I'm loading a 215 grain bullet and not a 150 grain bullet. Yeah the 150 grain bullet might be a lot faster at the muzzle, but it looses its momentum a lot quicker than the heavier 215 grain.

Lost 2 of my best bucks to rage broadheads. One broadside and 1 quarter too me slightly. One arrow broke off 2 inches in and the other one about 1 1/2 inches. Within 25 yards. Both edge of shoulders. Luckily they made it. Say shot placement but nobody is perfect and unless your a competitor shooter your going to have a bigger arrow grouping.

I just got a Mathew’s phase 4 33 ata, my arrows are all within .7gr around 462gr, 75lb draw weight. So I think I’m in the good ballpark of arrow weight. I’m shooting g5 montec fixed, 100gr. I watched the potato vidyon single bevel broadheads, my question is, if I move to the single bevel, do I need inserts with a bearing? My arrows clock counterclockwise. So either an extreme amount of loctite is required or different inserts. I just bought the bow and built my arrows from the bare shaft, so replacing the inserts would be difficult. But I definitely don’t want to shoot mechanicals, but I’ve liked what I’ve seen with the single bevels. If I need to change the inserts, I will, but idk if that’s necessary

As a just some random internet user looking at what you're asking i might suggest going with a direct bond insert or epoxy the broadhead threads into the insert. Both are things that the ranchfairy has done or suggested for maximum structural integrity of the arrow system. You could watch his cape buffalo arrow build video for some more suggestions.

My bow is set at 70lbs and my arrows are 250 spine, 29” long weighing around 500-515 grains. Weighted insert and 125gr magnus buzzcuts. Shot perfect at 20-30yds, but at 40yds my arrows were dropping 2-3 feet. I just couldn’t get myself to shoot an animal using equipment I wasn’t 100% confident in myself being as accurate as possible at 40+ yds. Not saying you can’t be dead accurate with that setup cause a lot of people are, but with how much the arrow dropped at 40yds made me second guess myself. Going with 450gr arrows and cut-on-contact single bevels this year. Other opinions on this matter are welcome!

My bow is 71 pounds. My arrows are 29 inches and are 520 grains. I also use a Magnus, but it’s the Black Hornet Ser Razor. It’s no issue at all shooting way out there with the equipment I have……on targets. It makes my 30 yards and in hunting shots so much easier. Take the time to figure it out. You’ll thank yourself later for it.

Magnus Stinger 150 but I’m 99% sure it was my practice head. Took Miles that day and wasn’t focused on which arrow I took out of my quiver so I think i shot the deer with a dull broadhead on accident

When I first started deer hunting, I was all self taught. I had KZbin and one close friend who had hunted and helped me out along the way, but the first couple seasons it was definitely a learning experience, but once I started aiming to the vital v or the opposite side shoulder, my success rate has been a lot better and I haven’t lost as many Deer shooting to the opposite side shoulder. If you see this comment the Hunting public please respond. Do you think you would have the same opinions on Broadhead selection? If you were using a high power modern crossbow I know you guys mainly use compound bows, but it would be pretty good to hear your guys input ifyou think your broadhead selection would be different with today’s modern crossbows

ive had far shorter tracks and much higher success with Magnus black hornets over rage with a 420 grain arrow. when rage worked it was fucking magnificent. the black hornets tho the deer just run and dont even know their hit half the time stop and fall over. dont even get me started on the shoulder blades. magnus blows through

I got sick of no pass throughs, I went to a 100 grain brass insert with a rear deployed BH, deadmeats. More than enough now!!! I do notice a drop in arrow past 30, especially past 40. But who cares

I've hunted big Canadian game for 47 years now. My father swore that a big bullet left a dead animal. Speed was irrelevant. On deer we never shot beyond 200yds in our woods but the bullets were big. 44 Magnum, 30-30, 35 Remington, etc. They leave big holes on both sides and we never lost an animal. It's why the 350 Legend 180gr bullets have been so successful on deer and bear under 200yds. It's enters and leaves with big holes. People poo poo-ed that caliber but the results for North American are now well documented. It's not speed, it's weight. Shooting light archery arrows is akin to shooting deer with 223's. It's plain wrong. If you have a distance issue and need speed to compensate, get off you asses and get closer.

I completely understand why you guys from the Hunting Public shoot the set ups you do. The types of hunting you do sneaking up on deer and shooting from the ground a lot and a lot of close shots and odd angles ect. But one thing that should be mentioned is that really heavy arrow set up with a big heavy flat broad head might not be the best option for someone hunting open woods out of a tree stand where they might be taking 40 yard shots through the trees with branches in the way where your trajectory is a big concern. Also where I hunt here in PA it's windy way more than it's not and that can really affect your arrow flight depending on what broad head and fletching you shoot. Basically you don't want to shoot the heaviest set up you can shoot period. You want to shoot the heaviest set up you can that works for you and your situation. I have definitely went with a heavier set up than what I used to shoot with a heavier foc arrow and 125 gr broad head but I'm still not shooting no 650gr set up either. You have to find that happy medium that works for you. God Bless

Nor was this misconception helped by so many "suggested aiming point" photos in magazines or educational handouts from the sate (that were probably drawn up by someone who didn't get it either). Because they were always saying "behind the shoulder" but what they were really showing behind the LEG, not the shoulder. Which is where I aimed for years. Good stuff guys as always.
