It's actually a lot easier than you think in this day and age, if it's China you want to go to. Just do a little bit of prep (for e.g., installing a good VPN on your phone for overseas travelers to access apps that you are used to within China), plus Google translate (by image), and you are pretty much good to go. English-Chinese translation on Google (and vise versa) is fairly powerful. And don't you worry about bypassing the Great Firewall by using your phone; ten of thousands of foreigners (and actually millions of local) do it on a daily basis in China without ever facing any problem. The authorities don't give a damn unless you are a spy or trying some shady stuff.

The first time that I visited my wifes family home in a small village in Guangxi, we went to buy fireworks and my in-laws insisted that my 8 year old nephew hold my hand so that I wouldn't get lost. I went along with it, but being that I was the only caucasian in town, I'm sure everyone knew who I belonged to 🤣 Spending New Years with family in rural China has been one of my fondest memories.

The lion dance is normally performed by martial artists, it is likened to the Scottish sword dance to condition the warriors to be more agile. A true lion dance is best experienced in Foshan as it is a martial arts Mecca.
