Let's consider things based on the most basic logic. All media in China are controlled by the government. All the military and police in China are also controlled by the government. If I want to persecute some people or this place was once very dangerous, would I still allow tourists to come in and travel and let them take some evidence? Why was Xinjiang not open to tourists before but is open now? In China, it is always said that Western media tell lies. If they tell lies, why don't they open up media freedom and Internet freedom and allow Chinese people to go on KZbin? Is it because they are afraid that Chinese people will tell lies and slander them? What happened recently in Urumqi, Xinjiang, some people were burned to death in fires because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the government's lockdown policy. You can search for these on KZbin and see all the videos. But in China you can't find any information, and all the tourists like to talk about China's security issues. China has a lot of cameras and it's very safe, but these cameras can only find criminals. You can't offend any Chinese officials, otherwise the cameras will find you quickly. If your friends, classmates, and family are persecuted by public power, you can't speak out, otherwise the person with public power will use the camera to find you quickly. When you travel to a place and you don't see anything, you say these things didn't happen. That's very unfair to those who were persecuted and died, just like when I traveled to Germany and I didn't see any Jews being persecuted. In fact, you can. If some things have never happened, why does the West choose Xinjiang and Tibet? Why don't they mention provinces like Guangdong and Guangxi? Because Xinjiang is for Uyghurs and Tibet is for Tibetans. You can search for videos of the suppression of these two provinces on KZbin, but you can't find videos of the suppression of Guangdong and Guangxi. Why? Because it really happened.

The main reason why security is much more visible in Xinjiang (technically, it, along with Tibet and a couple more regions, is an autonomous region and NOT a province) is the sad fact that it has suffered several rounds of terror attacks which were incited by foreign governments (we can all guess who they are). I suppose common sense (dressing modestly especially the ladies, not consuming alcohol so openly or overly display of physical intimacy etc) would suffice and ensure a pleasant trip along with the usual situational awareness. My understanding is that Tibet is the one of the stricter and more sensitive region (for non-Chinese) where foreigners need to be in a registered tour group (thus, 'permission') to enter. Anyway, given Tibet's high altitude, it might not be suitable for children. Looking forward to seeing your other Xinjiang videos. Hope that you would get the chance to visit its natural scenery (which is the main attraction) rather than just the big cities or towns.

It is correct that an autonomous region (e.g. Xinjiang, Guangxi, etc) has more delegated powers than a province and less than a municipality (Shanghai, Beijing, Tianjin, Chongqing). I think my concern about the Hutchinson journey is that it reminds me of my first reaction to China. Great culture, polite, etc. But nothing is as it seems. They are extremely naive. That is coming from a former long-term expat (University Senior Lecturer (retired)). So, for example, a number of excellent female students confided in me that the collectivist spirit (rather than (post-enlightenment) Western individualism/competitiveness) within a class was not based upon anything other than fear. The good students (particularly from poorer backgrounds without connections (guangxi) were heavily pressured to do the work of lazy well-connected students (higher proportion of males). When I asked, what if they refused, they said they would be beaten or otherwise punished. Sp don't be taken in by such simplistic naivety and shallow observations. Beware the (once) sleeping Tiger

You should know that in China, we don't need to protest to get heard. The hotline of 12345 in EVERY city is the way to go. It is called the mayor's hotline. File your complain, and if there are more than 3 or more similar complains, the mayor WILL form a special committee to handle the complain, and it is obligated for the hotline to report back to the ones who complained with results.

Everything is fake in the west. I live in the west. In my life, I only witnessed once, the government changed their policy due to a massive protest in London. All other protest large or small gets ignored. The powerful media especially BBC brainwashed the ordinary folks to think they have freedom and democracy.

I used to think how we can conserve the energy from exercise bikes in the gym (with ppl riding them) and use it for something. So, imagine my surprise to see this in a Chinese children's park. 👍😂

Kashgar is a great ancient city worth visiting in Xinjiang. Strongly recommend. Unlike other provinces, they have military police in streets to provide people with sense of SECURITY, as once there was influenced by Central & Western Asian radical Islamic terrorism somewhat around two decades ago, but it's VERY SAFE in XINJIANG now, I think it's much better than any Western country in the aspect of public security. Actually China's minority ethnic groups enjoy MORE benefits based on policies, and they even have more college & university admission opportunities with relatively lower exam scores.

The Hutchinsons really go deep into Asia to experience the culture. Showing the world the true China and Asian lifestyle, not what is portrayed in Western media. This is a real adventurous family, not afraid to immerse themselves with the locals. Maybe 0.0001% of Western families are going to China in general, let alone Xinjiang. This is where the Hutchinsons separate themselves from other travel youtube families.

As a mom with young children I just want to compliment on your kids, it’s not always pleasant for young kids to travel somewhere completely unfamiliar and without kids entertainments, not to mention if the parents are always working/filming. They are sooooo gooood!!!

When I went to china a professor from Hebi province Nie Huie put me up for a week, I have difficulty remembering how to pronounce the town, it had a nice boating lake with lots of weeping willows and with the little Chinese style bridges and cascading different willows turned it into a living Chinese painting, middle age woman were sparing with swords in the park using slow tai chi Style moves, I witnessed things people like us ever go, the Chinese treated my like I was a famous person, I went for a ride on their public bus, everyone stood up to offer me their seat, but my eyes were drawn to the back of the bus with a young Chinese Boy offered me their seat middle seat, he sat on my right and looked at me and smiled, on the bus they have Mr Bean videos playing all day, and it was like they think we are all like Mr Bean, The boy wanted to try his English on me, he was holding a white mug agains his chest and he told me it was a gift for his brother who’s Birthday it was, I gave him some English coins to take and I wished him to tell him happy birthday, also he told me that They love English people because of David Beckham and Mr Bean, Even at a restaurant where you can eat as much and drink booze as much as your life, it was £2 in English money value, it worked out £1 is £16 , so people in china it was catered for wealthy people, also because I was probably the first English person they ever met, the member of staff brought a knife and fork to the table just to be nice, they didn’t realize I wanted respect their ways by using chopsticks also, so I picked up my knife and fork and used them like chopsticks, they all found it funny,

Yeah, I experienced the same courtesy on a public bus in Guiyang City back in 2017. A boy offered me his seat once he saw me getting onto the bus, it was quite instantaneous, which made me think this practice of offering a seat to an elderly was quite common (I was about 68 and my age must have shown through).
The roller coaster that requires parents to work the kids up the slide is brilliant!😅

Love the kids playground. Beautiful city too. Thank you for sharing the video. Can you guys visit "Lijiang Ancient Town" in the Yunnan province if you haven't visited it yet. It's a change of scenery from the urban megacities and gives you the chance to see what parts of rural China looks like.
