I remember one race. I was like 5 years old at the time. I got separated from my parents. I was crying because I thought I had lost my parents. I was in the midway behind a merch hauler. He saw me crying. He stayed with me until we found my parents. He saw that I was a Carl Edwards fan. He took me to the JGR hauler and bought me a shirt hat, and Diecast. And autographed both. He was a super duper guy. He just was a cool man. I miss him…

I miss him because of how down to earth he was. The story of how he got into NASCAR is truly a hustle! He went out and put his name out there on business cards and it worked! I could go on and on! But I’ve never felt heartbreak over a race as much as I did in 2011. It was HIS year. To this day I’ve never felt more emotion from a tie breaker.

He retired because he was fed up with the direction of the sport. His career ended on a phantom caution, with a poor package, in a gimicky points system. Fans want him to come back because it would be an acknowledgment that the direction of things has really changed, and the ship has been righted. It would be a clear and obvious bellwether.
@DevinEMILE

Not to mention the one against Tony he probably could have won with the older system but they had the stupid chase system to deal with. Man got screwed by two shitty point systems where it isn’t about who’s the best the whole year. But who’s the best in the Fall. F1 proved last year in 2021 that a full season of points scoring can still be interesting.

I miss his personality, he was always a good natured driver. He did have a few moments but most of the time, Carl was always a fair driver who like Mark Martin should have won a championship and unlike Mark Martin came the closest without winning one, because he lost in a tiebreaker to Tony Stewart. But to be technical, he didn't really lose on points, just on wins.

He was asked in an interview what would get him to come back. He replied with something along the lines of wanting the cars to be faster again. He got fed up with LOLCAR's antics. The playoff system stinks, I think all nascar purists would agree with that. But when you have someone who just dominates year after year, it gets boring to casual fans. I think teams won’t say anything because they’re scared of repercussions. Nobody wants to make nascar their enemy.
@tsholts5173
@tsholts5173 2 жыл бұрын
@@-Jared It seems like that's only a problem in F1 though. Correct me if I'm wrong, but every other racing series tries to have the different manufacturer's cars be as similar as possible, except F1. The Chase just continued the problem that was starting to fade away (4 different team owners and 5 drivers won championships in 5 years from '99 to '03). '06 to '10 alone should've ended the Chase experiment, not doubling down. And viewership/ratings would tank in the final 10 races every year after starting it. Hindsight sucks as there wouldn't have been a back-to-back champion in 21 years, Kyle Busch in '18 and '19. Sure Harvick was the best in the 2010's and Johnson in the 2000's, but it's not like they would've won it all every year and there's more parity now than ever. And Harvick ridiculed the playoffs in 2020 after Martinsville and hasn't won since, so you may be onto something lol

The biggest mistake of his career was blocking the 22 at Homestead. All he had to do was hang on Larson’s door, he’d have had the lead or at least a run down the back stretch and would have been fighting for the lead coming out of 4. There was enough laps left for his car to take the lead and disappear down the road.

I looked it up and as soon as I saw it once I got home I completely burst into tears. One of the most upset moments I've had, felt like such a gut-punch especially with how 2016 ended (I still cannot watch that race to this day it was just way too painful). I never had the oppurtunity to watch NASCAR Live in his era because in Germany you have to really try to find it and after that, the Timezones. But nevertheless, I startet looking for him in 2011...and it just clicked. His character and Karisma made him for me the most loveable Driver in the whole field. To see the "99 Aflac Ford Dusion" win was so awesome...his switch to JGR was cool, a new challange and immediatly he was at the front. The Moment I heard about his Retirement, I was sad and for me, even though there where many other Drivers to watch and like, I had no real interest in try to watch it and looking up what happend week after week. He just was a natural person and a magnet for everything in that sport. He was just real and wasn´t afraid of telling the truth and beeing pissed if he had to be pissed, but also he get us and himself laught, when he made a mistake or crashed out but told it straight into the camera. I think a big point, why we all miss him so damn much, is because he has no social media and don´t really wanna have it either. When I saw the videos of him this year as a commentator for NASCAR, it was so great so see him again. And you could hear it from all the fans too...there were exited! With many other drivers, they gave us a glimps of what are they doing after there Racecarriers. But Carl does not do that...and I think because of that, we miss him so much. He feels soo far away for us fans...Like real gone

As a Carl fan from the beginning looking back as much as 2011 hurt 2016 hurt 10x worse. David Wilson just came out and admitted what I knew then, the bogus caution screwed him out of a title.

Carl and Tony were my Dad's favorite drivers at the time, because of that I HATED them. I hated them because of how amazing they were, I was simply in awe at how many wins they snagged in such a short amount of time. I was a huge Dale Jr fan as a kid so seeing them celebrate practically every weekend was torture for me. Now since I'm older I really appreciate and love the both of them. Both are class acts.

He’s the only one who ever said to Me, “Thanks for wearing My stuff.” After he WON Gateway in ‘06, he hung around out in the fanzone at Victory Lane for 30+ minutes after the trophy presentation, while all the media was in the media center awaiting him, talking with us fans(about 8-10) and taking pix. THAT was who this dude is.

The reason I missed Carl Edwards is cuz he was one hell of a driver he can will a race car right no other and I think the reason that he retired is money I think he was paid off to announce his retirement where Suarez could get in the number 19 and that's my opinion but I wish he would make his come back back to NASCAR if he did I'm accomplish fan right now I think I would jump back on board I was a Carl Edwards fan I was there in person when Carl Edwards won the Coca-Cola 600 I was there that race the one and only race I went to but I would have to jump back on the car Edwards bandwagon if he ever would come back to NASCAR

I think what happened was that Joe Gibbs was going to replace him with Daniel Suarez for publicity and then he had enough at that point and left. I wouldn’t blame him if that’s what happened.

we didn't appreciate him at all until he suddenly retired. Which is typical for nascar fans. It takes death, retirement, or competition fall off for us to even begin to appreciate some of the drivers we've had over the years. We are the most hateful, ungrateful and ignorant fanbase in sports. Bar none. Case in point, we hate guys like Logano, Kyle and Kurt Busch, Keselowski, yet the moment they retire or start to suck is when and only when we will begin appreciate what they brought to the sport. Not even realizing the ones who will take their place are usually as dry and vanilla and exciting as grass growing or paint drying, aka like Byron, Elliott, Blaney, etc

Valid point, I overlooked him a bit, but also liked watching him race. Always seemed like a nice dude Honestly, if I was him I would've walked away to if NASCAR threw a bullshit caution and took away my championship. I'd be pissed and never want to come back after getting robbed. I don't blame him at all tbh

Edwards was my driver during his time with Roush. I love Ford. So when he left for Toyota. It made me sad. That being said. I was also sad he didn't get that win a Talladega. Instead of seeing my driver win. I saw him flip into the fence.

About once a week, I always find myself asking the question: “why did Carl Edwards retire?” Did he suffer a bad injury that was never disclosed in the media? Was something going on with his family and he needed to retire to be home with them? Did Arris say they wanted Suarez in the cup series in 2017? It’s a question that I often think about.

I think it's the 2nd one you mention i think Arris wanted Suarez and paid off Edwards contract or something like that, but it backfired now Edwards was still winning and Suarez couldnt finish top 20 in points for JGR
@samharris3508
@samharris3508 2 жыл бұрын
Contract being paid off is one theory, Arris is a Mexican owned telecommunications company. They most likely offered him an enormous amount of money that he couldn't turn down. But he has stated on many occasions, that he would only return if the cars were like they were in the gen 4 and gen 5 era. 900hp, low downforce monster. He has no interest in these cars, and was not a fan of the direction NASCAR was going.

Carl should be at least a one time champion. He had 2016 in sight until nascar threw a fake ass caution to generate excitement. Would not blame him if that is a big part of the reason he left. Makes me see everything nascar is doing now as trying to manufacture drama and excitement in other ways because they are afraid the racing cant/wont speak loud enough for itself. Is pretty close to a joke and hard to take as seriously as I did 10-20-30 years ago.

Fun Fact: The defunct CGNR Team reached out to Carl Edwards to drive the #42 for the rest of 2020 when Kyle Larson was suspended indefinitely, but he turned the offer down, Matt Kenseth had a bad season, and the rest is history.

Carl became my favorite driver when rusty wallace retired because I just always like the way his personality contrasted with all the whiners in the sport. He would get wrecked and oftentimes would be bummed about it but would just say that is racing and sometimes it happens. Whereas guys like Kyle Busch, Jeff Gordon, Kevin harvick etc. would bitch non-stop when something would happen to them. It is also tough for me to have been a rusty fan and never watch him win a championship (he had won the title before I was old enough to watch), and then have him retire earlier than expected…then come to terms with it and become a Carl supporter, to then have him never win a championship and retired unexpectedly early too.

The first race I ever went to was Texas in 2008 which carl won. That day I became a carl fan. He was different from anyone else because he was realer than anyone else. He told it how it was and he treated people with respect and he easily could have won a championship by now if he was still in it. He deserved the 2008 and 2011 so in 2016 I think most wanted him to win

NASCAR drivers retirement is an issue, especially when it comes to them happening so close together. As of 2023, there are very few drivers racing that even raced just 10 years ago. When your favorite driver retires, it’s not like a normal sport where you can keep liking a team, you lose it all. That’s been so tough.
