7:19 coincidentally, that was the second time that day that a car sponsored by the National Guard lost the lead out of the final turn on the final lap. JR Hildebrand struck the wall on the exit of turn 4 at that afternoon's Indianapolis 500, giving the lead and the victory to the late Dan Wheldon.

From a fan aspect, 2 races had the most heartbreaking losses for me. 1. 2003 Ford 400 - Already a bittersweet week for a multitude of reasons on & off the track for me, this race had that last lap tire cut against Bill Elliott while he was leading his last race as a full-time driver on NASCAR... & no Johnny Benson finishing 4th did not make me feel better. 2. 2008 Cool City Customs 200 - This is the race with the infamous Erik Darnell/Johnny Benson photo finish. Yes I was upset over that, but the actual reason it was infamous is because it was overshadowed by a different last lap incident. That incident resulted in the Ron Hornaday & Kyle Busch fans of my racing group having a shouting match over that last lap & everyone else laughing at that while consoling me.

You didn’t put Bill Elliott’s blown tire in his last race in the #9 car at Homestead on this list?!? A lot of the guys on this list went on to win again, but Bill had his last shot to go out on top literally go up in flames. My ten-year-old self locked myself in my bedroom and cried for an hour. Still hurts seeing replays of it.

Harvick missed the playoffs last year because a faster Erik Jones (who was being kicked out of his ride the next season) was told not to pass his teammate because it would put Harvick in the Championship 4 and kick Hamlin out I believe. That was worse than losing a race.

There's basically a series that I'd love to see here, typically ones where it's a driver vs a track, where these drivers struggled to either get a win but performed well on those said tracks/races An obvious example is Ryan Newman vs Plate tracks, Dale Sr. Vs the Daytona 500, Jimmie vs Chicagoland and Hamlin vs Homestead(Before 2020)

Chase Elliott 2020 Coke 600. Would have won but his teammate William Byron blew a tire with two laps to go. This forced overtime and forced Elliott to pit. Brad Keslowski won the race. Chase Elliott fan btw. Also 2017 Martinsville fall race were Chase Elliott got spun out of his first win by Denny Hamlin with 5 to go. Took another year for Chase to win his first race. Finally Bill Elliott’s 1985 season which is was not alive for but my father was and he lost the championship to Darell Waltrip after winning 12 races including all the crown jewel races. Waltrip won only 3.

One a lot of people forget about is the 2001 Atlanta race when Dave Blaney was in the #93 Amoco car. He got the lead with a great car Doug Randolph set up and was pulling the field .3 a lap. EASILY the best(looking) car there. Caution comes out and his pit crew left a rear wheel loose. Wheel came off after a few laps. That was so hurtful for us at Amoco. But his son Ryan got revenge and won the race 20 years later. And I called it on twitter before the race! That place owed the Blaney family, and Ryan ran down Larson and won it.

Bill Elliott 2003 Homestead should have been on this list.
@twc6213 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. Towards the top too. Granted he did win the week before, but imagine losing what should of been your LAST win to a cut tire on last lap. FUN FACT, bill started 20th that day at homestead in 2003 and had he held on to win it would of been the 2nd furthest back he started to win. Once a 38th, otherwise 17th is his lowest starting spot to win. Crazy stat. Nearly all of his wins come from front starting spots in top 5.

Some of my takes: 1983 Carolina 500: Bill Elliott, who hadn’t won a race yet, loses to Richard Petty by mere feet. I can’t confirm but I believe Elliott was visibly discouraged in the post-race interview (this was his sixth runner-up finish), and the pit reporter tried to cheer him up. But maybe I’m thinking of a different race. 1986 Miller High Life 400: greatest short track race ever. Imagine you crash early in the beginning, only to rally with the team, lap everyone and find Earnhardt between you and victory. The battle gets as unhinged as a Twitter debate. Then you send it into the turn and come out on top, only for Earnhardt to dump you on the backstretch out of sheer spite. That’s what happened to Darrell Waltrip. But if it’s any consolation, Earnhardt lost control and crashed too. 1987 The Winston All-Star race: yeah we all remember the Pass in the Grass, but what’s not remembered is that Elliott’s car was the best, but the aggression between the both of them caused Elliott to blow a tire. He made sure to show his disdain after the race. 1989 The Winston All-Star race: Wallace and Waltrip are battling towards the end and Wallace sends Waltrip spinning in the grass. It seemed to be an accident but it painted Waltrip as a martyr and Wallace as a villain. There was a fistfight too. 2012 Pocono 400: Mark Martin was a few laps away from becoming the oldest driver to ever win a race, and also gaining his first win in 3 years, but Joey Logan’s bumped him out of the way and took away one of his last real shots at a win in his aging career. And let’s not forget the last two Talladega races: DiBenedetto has come so close and I feel so sorry for him.

I wonder what an IndyCar list of this variety would look like. I'm sure Michael Andretti's loss in the 1992 Indianapolis 500 and Marco Andretti's loss in the 2006 Indianapolis 500 would be pretty high on that list.
