About the child labor laws roll back. There was 67 different McDonald's locations in Kentucky who were employing children as young as 10 years old. In one case the 10 year old wasn't even getting paid, and was working until like 2am on week nights. There's no upside to any of that.

I was homeless in SF but kept it on the DL because I’d shower at the gym and could spend the night with a different friend night to night. I had a full time job and was going to school full time, but eventually dropped out so I could spend that time trying to find permanent housing (and never ended up going back). I don’t think 1% of people looking at me could tell I was homeless, but the shame and fear I felt from that time was so profound I’m a completely different person now and not in a good way.

The sad part is that it does not take all of society to fix these problems where there are strong communities and support systems. For instance, friends, family, religion, or any other strong form of cummunity. Instead we rely on the government to take more money in the form of taxes and expect them to be efficient in how they deploy it to do what communities could and would otherwise be doing if we incentivised it. But we don't incentivise it. Instead they hold their hand out to the tax payer and then proceed to be very untrustworthy and flat out shitty stewards of what we give them. I am glad that you made it out, but man, more government is not the answer to these problems.

Graham immediately talking about public housing as a way to attract people to an area that has declining populations right after Hasan mentions Vienna is so insane I actually laughed out loud. Vienna is a massive city and is widely regarded as one of if not the most livable city in the world. Additionally, as an American who now lives in Germany the perspective that most Americans have on housing is so brain broken. Like I grew up in the suburbs and the way that those communities are structured feels like it’s made to alienate you from your neighbors and overall larger community. Whereas here I feel like housing is used as a vehicle to encourage community though the use of shared common space. Lastly, Graham comes off overall as someone who is well intentioned but really needs to spend some time out of the bubble he exists in. It feels like he doesn’t even recognize how messed up his perceptive is on issues like this because the only people he receives input from are people who agree with his worldview.

Would like to point out that those child labor violations were for kids as young as 11 working overnight shifts at slaughterhouses. Using extremely hazardous chemicals that regularly burns their skin to clean the dangerous butchering machinery and mopping up the blood and guts. Imagine being 11, going to school all day in a new country and trying to learn another language, you go home and then go work 8 hours at a slaughterhouse, and coming back home at 2/3/4am to get a couple hours sleep. You do this 5 days a week and then you work the weekends too so you get no days off.

Really, I thought the opposite. I feel like he sucked at explaining himself in this podcast and instead does a way better job on his own streams. Point in my favor Graham still doesn't understand what Hasan meant when he said "the US deserved 9/11" cause Hasan didn't simply state "what I meant is that the US government constantly destabilizes third world countries for profit or influence and we've done it since pretty much the 1820s with the Monroe doctrine and it only increased once we became the most powerful country in the world after ww2. So not only did we create the reason they hate us by like destabilizing countries but we also fund extremist violent groups in order to destabilize said nations. Like we funded the Taliban in the 80s and legitimised them as freedom fighters allowing them to pretty much take over Afghanistan and spread out throughout the entire region. Well some of these freedom fighters decided that they didn't like the US destabilizing shit in their backyard, became terrorists, and took the training we gave them and turned it on us. So what I meant is that US foreign policy literally gave them the reason they hate us but not only that we funded them too, thus allowing them to actually attack us."

The interesting part of the discussion about being a landlord and public housing is very similar to healthcare. If being a landlord is truly a service that the private sector provides that has great value, why is public housing a threat? Shouldn't they be able to compete with the public sector even if they operating on a revenue neutral basis? At the end of if the private sector can do a better job they will prevail. But the reality is that landlords don't actually provide real value other than eat up my yearly raises by rent increases while not providing any value for those increases in rent.

Now that major corporations like Blackrock are getting into the real estate and landlord business, there will be less and less for mom and pops to have available in the pool and they're less likely to be conpetitive. So why choose a large corporation to evenetually take over majority housing (they're only incentive is profit) when you could choose a government to take that role. They would be efficient and profit is not an incentive, so housing would be affordable.

The issue with ‘public housing’ is it comes at a cost to everybody else. Public housing isn’t just free, nothing is. You pay for it one way or another. So if I want to invest in real estate, but I have to subsidize my competition, that’s an issue. It’s becomes not worth investing in real estate since I will have to fight pricing with a competitor that doesn’t need to worry about cost since tax pays for it. If you reduce the incentive to invest in real estate, we’ll obviously less will invest in it. This leads to lower inventory, and higher prices, meaning we need to raise more for this ‘public housing’ to continue. Eventually you have most of the market is public housing, you likely see reduced home ownership and higher prices. As for the service landlords provide, it’s the cost and headache of homeownership. If you think these things aren’t factors, then you’ve clearly never owned a home.

Lived in a studio apartment like that for quite awhile while I built my business. Isn't that bad. What is bad, is dealing with noisy "certain demographics" above me. Your ilk would probably call that prejudice, but it's true. Everyone else in that complex was quiet, even the illegals who had to be up at 4am in the morning to get to work. I felt for them, having to deal with DeShawn and his party guests all night before setting out for a job no one here would probably ever want to do. Anyway, for free? Yeah, you don't get a single-family house. I don't think you've ever touched a drywall spatula in your life before, or you'd understand these things aren't just made by drawing some lines on a notepad.

The part of the child labour seems to have missed a critical part. It is not about harmless side jobs to get some pocket money. It is about jobs that have quite the chance of getting children crippled or even killed, so jobs that kids will be forced to do, if they are from poor families. I can tell Graham is well intentioned (I've seen him around on the internet before but this is my first pod ep of his) and I feel that his take is one the majority of americans hold. Narrow-minded is the perfect descriptor, its as if everyone (and I mean everyone, me included) has been conditioned to jump straight to "oh but they won't make money so it won't work"... as in we judge and dismiss possible societal changes on the basis of -> "but the profits will suffer". Rarely do we think about the world in a humanitarian light, we think of the world as business first, people second. Graham is a perfect example of a well meaning and empathetic person who's 'brain broken' by 'capitalism' (scare quotes cuz internet-y buzzwords tend to set off alarm bells in peoples heads) and his questions betray that. It seems that Graham is curious and intelligent, however, which is nice and I do hope he doesn't just put on a curious character for the camera but instead really critically think about what he's talking about

I don’t even know why I used to hate on Hasan. Not like… a troll. I just thought negatively of him. But as a trans woman who now listens to him regularly- he is such an incredible man. The eloquent way he speaks, the care and passion he has- and the constant defending of me, and my trans brothers and sisters has left me somewhat shameful that I ever once felt negatively about him. There was a moment when Graham said "oh but having a house is such a responsability, it's better to rent, you have freedom to go anywhere" and that really upset me aout how the whole point was missed: people need shelter and food to live and to live a fulfilling life. They need to know that those two things are covered so they can actually focus on the extras like social life, work, health, etc. to a person renting is good if you have the income to actually go anywhere and rent there to pursue the oportunities available. but what if that pursuit doesn't bear fruits? what if by some misfortune/mistake you can no longer afford said rent? if at the very least, the state can grant you a house to live (a simple, poor person house, but a house) you can try again, restricted to the opportunities close to the provided house, yes, but a much better scenario than being homeless. if someone brings up the "oh, but then people will just be lazy, because the state provide house and food so they don't need to work" card, rember that no one likes being poor. people will always want to eat better, to live in a nicer house, indulge in hobbies and leisure. people want to have an impact, with basic needs met, they will want to work to improve society, that makes us feel good. but no one can even aspire to try and solve a major challenge for humanity, or create impactfull art, or anything like that if they are struggling with survival.

This right here. Absolutely right. Basic human needs are human rights. Protection of human rights is the responsibility of the government. Housing being one of the most essential basic human needs, and considering just how much demand exists at this time, it just seems outrageous that funds and tax breaks aren’t being allocated to it. If you really wanted to hit equilibrium between these two perspectives, make a rent controlled tax break for private investment in affordable and low income housing. If you provide these services (and maintain them to appropriate living standards*****) then I don’t have an inherent problem with private housing. Graham, I am a longtime viewer and I respect you for inviting Hasan and Brett to talk! This was a great convo! I appreciate you considering other perspectives than the mainstream media that controls narratives to push agenda favoring corporations and the status quo. One thing I would like to suggest is to avoid using "both sides" framing. I get that in America, there are only 2 main political parties, but there are wayyy more than 2 sides to every issue. This narrow framing of the political spectrum lumps people and groups who have many differences together and creates a general misunderstanding of what their actual beliefs are. Hasan is anti-capitalist and anti-imperialist, which is very different from neoliberals and Democrats who support a lot of the same policies as Republicans and conservatives, but differ on some economic issues and mostly on social issues. Hasan isn't "far left" and Brett isn't "far right", but Brett works for a company that receives millions in funding from corporations and billionaires. Be cautious about what she says bc "wokeness" is just companies trying to profit off of social issues by pandering to minority groups. They don't actually care about those issues, since they still exploit workers and treat them like shit. These social culture wars are a distraction from the real economic issues that most Americans face every day. I'm just trying to say that Hasan and Brett are not "two sides of the same coin", but differ vastly in their belief systems and who they align with. It's clear that Brett aligns with corporate interests and Christian fundamentalism, while Hasan advocates for the working class and basic rights and needs for all people.

Although he believes crime is not a crime, he never says people should enjoy crime and roll over and allow people to commit crimes against them. His position is pointing out the reality that the systems we put in place have, for possibly eons, taken advantage of criminals to farm their criminal behavior. The more agitated you make the masses, the more you can write them off as unreasonable and need to be forced under an iron fist. This attitude is societally propagated so that the system can self justify subjugating and exploiting people and groups who do not benefit from majority / main stream privileges. (Typically being born into or closer in proximity to wealth and power) So the core of his stance is calling out the bullshit of the system. Along the lines of "it's bullshit the system designates punishments to those it deems as criminal, while it knowingly and willfully denies support to those that aren't born into enough wealth while actively exploiting said people". Much of our recorded history available in academia shows us that we have known since civilizations in ancient Greece that crime is directly correlated to wealth/access to resources necessary to survive and thrive. (these are both the same thing) That doesn't mean the rich never commit crimes. But it is factually inarguable that the less wealthy get directly punished and exploited by our systems far more, and more severely than the rich and wealthy. Especially in terms of dire consequences and availability of total options to undertake any opposition presented by the system.

Additionally, this does not mean there aren't people who are too far gone or that the risks of rehabilitation far outweigh the chances of success. Of course that is inevitable, but it is laughable to think that would be the majority of cases for people that need aid. It is also inarguable that there is an unacceptably poor amount of avenues available for people so as to attempt to fix their lives. Whatever social systems we have in place are severely underfunded, understaffed, and are held up with literal ticker tape like some kind of sick joke. All while an egregious majority percentage of all tax income the government generates is perpetually "reinvested" into the military industrial complex. All while the government actively cuts funding for everything else people need to survive, develop into competent workers, and thrive. Education, healthcare, etc. Said tax funding is "invested" so that the above mentioned military complex can fund R&D and, especially, "global operations for National Security". (Which is categorically terrorism by definition. When looking at the FBI, CIA, and military's own SELF reported publicly released declassified documents showing the death and destruction they cause in other countries. Including of course, economic destruction / turmoil. Which we all know that it is very likely the numbers they DECIDE to show, are definitely adjusted to be more "digestible". Or deemed "sufficiently acceptable given the nature of the circumstances".) Why jump higher than your competition when you can just cut off their legs.

I watch both Graham and Hasan. I align more with Hasan’s philosophy of socioeconomics, but I also learn a lot from Graham. I try very hard not to limit my exposure to the people I 100% agree with. I don’t 100% agree with anyone, because I’ve learned enough from different people to form my own opinions, which I continually challenge by introspection and exposure to different arguments. It is indeed possible to be open-minded without spilling your brains and being a mindless people-pleaser. The key is tolerance to disagreement and perhaps even a bit of a disagreeable nature, in the sense that you relish debate not for the glory but for the pursuit of understanding. I love being proven wrong even more than I love successfully defending a position.

Bureaucrats are incentivized by votes (regardless if it's efficient) C. Bureaucrats are no longer incentivized by votes after a certain threshold of control Some economic facts, subsidies inflates demand curve, increasing prices (Yes, your tuition increases are due to the protectionist government policies on colleges) price floors/ceilings can create shortage/surplus, now apply that to healthcare/housing/worker "protection", "Minimum wage is the most anti-black legislation, second only to jim crow, in post civil-war US" (Thomas Sowell, POC, born poor, economist. And yes, he has sources) no such thing as free lunch, only trade-offs Saw a macroeconomics study, governments should only account for 10-25% of the economy (forgot the exact range, search epb research). Current US is already at 35% meaning the US government is already wasteful/beyond it's peak efficiency in terms of economic growth. it's time to cut down (and allow market competition into healthcare/housing/education)

Also when Graham brought up isn’t leasing from the government the same as a landlord. The answer is no it’s not. Paying rent to the government the money would go back into the community instead of the pocket of the landlord. The money would have to go to repairs instead of it being at the whim of the landlord. This would be enforced by policy like Red Vienna. The public housing rent goes straight to providing more amenities or covering utilities. It’s a good housing policy.

I mean they’re polite, which I guess is a lot today. Their views are still pretty abhorrent. The fact Hasan should have to spend two hours explaining that people who are homeless shouldn’t be summarily executed and children shouldn’t be working in mines and slaughterhouses and them still not getting it and saying they had fun while sipping a protein shake in their several million dollar home is disgusting. I’m glad they’re nice but I still hope they get vaporized along with the rest of us.

idk the upward mobility argument from Graham seemed kinda silly. Talking about would you rather be rich or have the motivation to one day be rich. Obviously one of those is a sure thing and no real person given that choice would turn down the sure thing. It's easy for people like Gary Vee to say they'd rather be poor because of the motivation but he doesn't have to be poor, he already won. So he can say it all he wants but it holds no weight.

I had the privilege to not work until I graduated college. My parents told me that "my job right now is school" they made my education a priority and supported me. However, I did get a good perspective of working a part-time job in high school to encourage me to not want to work a boring minimum wage job. I think kids should get paid internships at companies/trades (very part time) and work part time minimum wage jobs to help them see what degree they should be going for in college. The lack of awareness either causes people to not go to college or go to college and get a useless degree.

Hasan's landlord take here is very mild. You can tell he's toning it down significantly for the audience. I think Graham's point of "Landlords are providing a service because they tend to fix up properties that no one wants to live in" loses validity when you don't immediately sell the property after "fixing it up". But really the anti-landlord movement is about how you have a good that is necessary for survival, that people have turned into a way to make money (commodification). Because capital is needed to purchase a home, long-term rental homes are just a way for capital owners to siphon more money away from people who have less than them. Then as people start buying up multiple homes, supply dwindles raising the prices of the housing market making it that much more difficult to purchase your first home. Seeing how rents across the nation have gone up roughly 60-80% nationwide over the past 12 years "just cause" is a real problem that needs to be addressed. Unrelated, but I think Hasan needs to clean up his "America Deserved 9/11" talking point. It's obviously going to come up in every interview but I still don't think he does a great job of explaining it. Just saying "I stand by it in principle as long as I elaborate what the intention behind why I said it" doesn't really get his point across. He really needs to talk about it like "I want to be clear, I don't think that the people who died in 9/11 deserved it. What I meant by this comment is that the US Government has a long-standing history of destabilizing foreign countries as a means to either have access to their natural resource, or commonly as a way to halt the influence of the soviet union in the 80s and 90s. The US Government was directly involved in creating the Taliban and funding the Mujahideen when it it was a way to benefit our own interests. However over the years those same groups began to resent the US for what we did in that region, and retaliated against us"

Same with socializing anything else. You cannot force someone else to work for free in the name of “equality and equity,” whereas if you are actually looking for a way to help the homeless, start volunteering your own time, as should be given tax benefits like donating to a 501c3.

"If rising costs for everything continue, doesn't that mean they need more money?" Can we PLEASE have THIS conversation be broadened to more than the perspectives of Police Officers and Landlords? Costs rising for everyone without wage growth leads to the economic conditions that Hasan mentions. Why can't a McDonald's worker get overtime or benefits at a similar guarantee to a Police Officer, when they both provide a daily service to the public? (Note: Most McDonald's restaurants do not allow overtime to be scheduled and reserve the right to punitive actions against an employee that does work past 40 hrs/week without specific permission beforehand) The public becomes liable for a persistent increase in their own costs as well as a decrease in the realized benefits of where tax money is spent. Mismanaged funds in Police Departments or inflated budgets would never get scrutinized if there was no need for argumentation on why or how much a department's budget should be addressed. There is a lack of empathy for the individual, those people the Police are supposed to be 'serving and protecting' instead of being glorified asset/property bodyguards and ticket revenue machines for their state. Who is making a bigger difference on the community they participate in between the fast food worker and the officer? Who is more important, the workers or the business owners? If everything is for profit, where do you draw moral lines? Lastly, why would is be so difficult to address how much struggle is happening across demographics/geological areas with collective action instead of relying on those same people to harness a strong sense of individuality and fix it themselves, can substantial assistance programs be implemented in a way that eliminates the causes poverty/homelessness instead of exacerbating the symptoms?
