Erin, don’t worry about your mangaves. I have had mine for many years. Some are huge. I take them in every year. I put them in a spare bedroom. I am a horrible houseplant owner. My mangaves live on neglect in the winter. I use regular potting soil. They don’t care. They are amazing. The only thing I have to be concerned about is my back. I put mine in light weight pots but boy are they heavy. I live in central Pennsylvania. I love your videos. Keep them coming!

@@TheImpatientGardenerGO for it!! There is a gardener here in Utah that has unheated greenhouses where he grows citrus and peaches in the winter. He piles wood chips along the sides of plastic greenhouses and it keeps them warm all winter and cooler all summer when it’s 100+ degrees outside.

Erin, you don’t wish you lived in an eternal summer climate. Originating from Southern California, I can tell you that the climate excludes planting an endless number of beloved perennials that require a cold and dormant period. It painfully limits your palette!

I take a garden marker and write the name of the plant that I need to overwinter on the container and store it in a save stack. All other nursery containers are up for grabs for whatever use I need them for that year. I use a tag for the plant and place it inside the container after writing the plant name on the tag with a waterproof garden marker. Just an idea/ thought. Thank for sharing your garden time with us.

(My great aunt always grew it on her balcony in pots) I deadhead or cut off the baby pods and avoid those painful spines. Wow...and I thought I was doing well with bring two plants into the house! You need a greenhouse....so you can keep your darlings in there and you can still putter around in it in the winter! 💚🏡 (I'm mourning a tragedy. I hired someone to trim some of my shrubs and he butchered (repeat-butchered) some of my Spreading Junipers. Big gap...what to do now! I'm still in shock.)

I live in Zone 9B (California) where the majority of my perennials over winter in the ground with an occasional cover if a hard freeze is forecast. If I had to go through what you do to over winter plants, there would be a lot of dead stumps in my garden! In fall, I focus my efforts on multiplying a few tender perennials/annuals that I really love - - I take a bunch of cuttings and over-winter the rooted cuttings in an unheated greenhouse. I also have two banana plants. I wish they would just die, but others in my life think they are wonderful They are huge (more than 20' tall) ! And totally ruin the cottage garden look I prefer. I cut them to the ground each year (honestly kind of hoping a nice hard freeze will take them out), but they always come back, larger than ever. The leaves are so enormous and heavy, I can barely lift them!

If you take a bag of topsoil and a half bag of sand, mix them together, and plant those agaves in that mix, they should be fine. For my potted plants, such as my little Meyer Lemon tree, I water it with 1 part hydrogen peroxide to 3 parts water for a couple-3 waterings to kill off any unwanted bug eggs. Then it comes in the house. Thanks for sharing!

Z5a, WI just north of you we will get frost Monday night I’m sure. If 32F is the forecast we will be 27F. I don’t like babysitting plants in winter and the bugs are too much. I have only a couple herbs-bay leaf and rosemary and if there are any others I want to keep I propagate them. Digging bulbs is enough work. The couple houseplants I do have are tuff and don’t mind my less than stellar plant care.

Is your garage insulated? We insulated ours a few years ago and it made a huge difference. I am in Manitoba, we regularly see temps in the -30 Celsius range, without heating the garage it did not fall below -10 Celsius all winter. That’s with opening the overhead door regularly. I just park all the plants as far away from the door as I can.
