My mother was the “Queen of Begonias and Sweet Peas.” My Dad prepped her trench in the Fall with manure and loam so it was ready for early planting. She always planted her sweet peas on Washington’s Birthday. We celebrated Washington’s Birthday with a cherry pie and the sweet pea planting. 🤎All summer she brought bouquets into the house nearly every day! She used to freeze her sweet pea seeds in ice cube trays. Then she planted the ice cubes and quickly covered them to control spacing! It worked like a miracle until that one year I came home from school and made a pitcher of koolaid.....😂😂

If you don't have root trainers, sweet peas grow well in toilet roll tubes which you can plant straight out into the ground when they have reached a reasonable height as the roll will bio-degrade.

Sweet peas are a must. Usually I just grow big box store, off the shelf variety mixes. This year, I’ve gotten some specific varieties from Floret and I’m pretty excited. Most of my previous sweet peas have been pastel pink & lavender and I’m excited to try some hot pink/cerise colors plus the deep dark purples and I have a nearly blue variety as well. I always grow them in my veggie garden so I can smell their heavenly smell while I do mundane veggie tasks. Here’s to happy sweet peas!

ERIN!!!! I have been gardening for over 25 years. I was fascinated by gardening at a young age. The first time I heard of Sweet Peas was watching Martha Stewart Living. Although they are so pretty in bouquets, they never appealed to me as a garden plant. Well today my friend you have convinced me to grow sweet peas. I want to introduce more things in my garden besides abundant flowering and beautiful foliage. The fact that these have a heavenly scent (I'm embarassed to say I have never smelled a real sweet pea)- I am sold. So I bought three packs of mixed sweet peas. Sugar and Spice (pinks); Little Sweetheart Mix (pastels) and Ocean Foam (purples). Some I did as a winter sowing method- the remainder I will start in trays. Thank you so much for this informative video! Now I need to figure out where to plant them in the garden!!!

Such great info! And Erin, your hair! 😍 I tried growing sweet peas for the first time last year. I planted the seeds in a big pot that had some daffodils in it from the spring. They sprouted and grew about a foot...then I went on vacation. I put a call out to my neighbors to ask of anyone could water while we were gone, and to my surprise and delight a master gardener said she would! when I got back everything was fine except for my sweet peas. She missed them in the watering. So you're right, if you don't water them that is pretty much the end 😅😭 I also didn't realize they wanted it cool, so I think I planted them too late as well. Thanks for a great video!!

I couldn't find trainers last year (and they are still sold out now) so I saved all of my paper towel rolls all winter (I use a lot of paper towels) and plan to bunch them up in a plastic pot. They are longer than toilet paper rolls so I hope they will work. Even if they disintegrate too soon the roots should hold together. I have never been able to get sweet peas to germinate in the ground so I gave up on them until I watched your videos. I think I'll also use the pre-sprouting method. I can't wait to see if they will grow. Thank you!

This was helpful! I've grown sweet peas at our old house but we've now moved back to the farm where I grew up. Last summer, I noticed masses of sweet peas growing wild in the ditches beside a gravel road. There had been a homestead there at one time. So in the fall, I collected a bunch of the seeds and I'm going to plant them. I figure if they can survive for decades unattended in a ditch, they should be fine in my garden! My favorite thing about them was that they continued to bloom all summer long with no supplemental water or care. My previous sweet peas could never make it through the hottest parts of summer.

I just planted orange and dark blue sweet peas today here in Iowa City. I soaked them overnight. I got them for a Ukrainian seed seller on Etsy, Elenaseeds. I erected bamboo stake teepees over them. I have some little cute terra cotta pots so I'll try those on top as finials too. Right now the stakes are just tied at the top. I"ll have to put some fencing around to keep the rabbits away. Thanks for the advice. You are fun to listen to.

Great video with a ton of useful instructions. You and I are certainly on the same wavelength! First our love of the Chanticleer black water display pot, now sweet peas. We just moved to Central California (Zone 10) from 6 years in the UK, where I was gardenless but purchased bunches of sweet peas often at our local farmers market. I never had sufficient sun to grown them in our NJ garden, so I am trying them here in a galvanized raised trough. I direct sewed them mid February and they have about 4 inches of growth. We get frequent days and nights with high winds, so I used a pre-made 5 foot tall rusted iron trellis that seems solid enough to hold through those gusts. My seeds are from Burpee, and I'm growing Sweet Dreams (mixed colors), High Scent (wh/lav bicolor) and Eckford's Finest (heirloom mixed colors). If it gets too hot too early for maximum flower production, next year I'll plan to pre start my seeds in the fall, as you advised, and set them out much earlier. Question-should I place mulch on the raised bed, and if so...do you have a suggestion of which type?
