DUDE! This is how people die! I was on the edge of my seat watching this! You are fortunate to be okay, glad you are. I say the following out of concern, I have seen too many serious and fatal accidents that could have been prevented. That jack not kicking out from under him surprised me... a few tapcons and a block wood in the concrete would have been so much safer! Invest in a come-a-long, you could use to anchor the other side and have a friend - a few friends when dealing with this weight - and have negative pressure applied opposite the positive pressure you were applying. With th way you were leaning, one slip and that could have crushed you. Please be careful in the future!

I am shocked that the foot of the jack didnt kick out on the initial lift. Hi-lift jacks on concrete floors not a good combo. For others watching, you can rent engine hoists do this type of work. Also never ever ever leave a hi-lift handle in the down position with weight on the jack, and never straddle the handle.

@@thepitpatrol probably could have made a jig with a come along, that way he was not close to the potential hazard, I've been on construction sites and seen the type of injuries that occur from these metal plates falling on people. People are dumb and monkey see monkey do, that's why it should have some sort of warning. With hi-lift jacks the test is given right before the lesson. Lesson 1. Never ever let go of the handle. The handles are removable for a reason. A beter idea might have been to weld the chain to the plate allowing things to pivot, and the jack to remain vertical. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Good luck in your ventures.

Great build! My 10 yr old son walked away saying NOPE when you were trying to flip that beast of a table. Hahaha! I said around 650-700 lbs, so I was good on the weight calculations. I built my own table some years ago that is similar to what you have here, but 5x10 by 1/2 inch plate. That plate on what I built weighed over a half ton alone. Some of the moves I've seen you do in this video, I'll put in the phrase of "you are one lucky dude." Be glad you are still around for the people who love you because your guardian angle was sure on the job and I'm sure she had backup waiting in the wings.

I liked the work you did. Here is my thoughts: You have planned to make a heavy duty table to hold up all future heavy duties. Handling heavy machinery requires bigger lifts. You shouldn’t try to skip any step to arrive your goal set on your mind always remember.

I don't like to put people down when they're having a go, but so much of that stuff was straight up stupid. When you don't have experience (and clearly you don't) doing something that may kill you, get some information rather than just having a go. There are lots of forums out there full of helpful people who are generous with their knowledge. Any one of them would have given you a dozen good safe ways to accomplish that task without risk of personal injury using nothing but tools you already have. Learn some basic principles of timeless tools like wedges, levers, and wheels. Having your wife reverse the car into you? holy shit mate... You can lift plate much thicker than that using wedges. To the point you can get a lever under it. Almost anything you have can be a lever if it's strong enough. At that point, a block under the lever is a fulcrum. Chock the plate with some wood. Put two steel pipes under the plate and now you can easily roll it - not with your fingers under it, but using a lever. And FFS put some steel can shoes on. When it comes to lifting/flipping, much the same story. That hi lift jack has its place, and can be used many different ways. Using the above technique you can roll the constructed table to where you have an exposed beam in the roof of suitable strength, weld an eye/chain to the table and lift it using the jack as a hoist. Don't weld cast - presumably the jack and possibly the clevis are both cast and not forged. alternatively, as mentioned, at least triangulate the braces, and then jack from under the brace only in a vertical dimension. With a long enough lever, one man safely lever/flip a plate of that size. Same story lifting the table when it was on 2 castors. So many near misses and close calls, you won't live through too many days like that. Put your safety first, live to spend time with your family. Hopefully that knock in the head knocked some sense into you and lets you see just how many times you came close to either killing or disabling yourself for life that day. I'm no safety nazi, worked in some rough places. Seen enough guys crushed to death, lost limbs and killed. The rest of your life is a long time to be reflecting on your own stupidity if you get a permanent disabling injury. Don't be that guy - get advice and information before you act.

I am no expert in metal working but I do know that table can easily be a killer and weighs a hell of a lot! I was waiting for that jack to slide out from under the table across the concrete and then see the table crashing down the entire time. That was damn scary. The fact you held it up then braced it with that thin angle iron too whilst releasing the jack...one small piece of angle iron versus 600 pounds of force pushing down and OUT at the bottom too! It could have easily slipped out and the table come crashing back to its original position, The I beam would do nothing to protect you. I like what you are making etc but dude please learn some basic safety...your heavy lifting technique has been *very* lucky in this instance. Please take care - for your family's' sake!

First I was waiting on the jack to slip or Break. Second when the table flipped I was wondering if the tacked angle iron and the jack was going to become flying objects into orbit let alone the ground lead still hooked to the table from the welder. That could have jerked the welder and bottle over breaking off the regulator and possible valve to bottle.Then once you had it upright you mounted the table to the casters on all thread pencils. Crazy man just crazy. Please don't do anymore heavy metal work and lower the legs all the way down to the casters.

Honestly I enjoyed the video, because of the suspense. I was thinking 'ratchet strap around the jack base to the table' and '2x4s to the wall' or 'chain to the car bumper' .... You can rent a mag drill and broach bits. Figure out what size you’re going to use for your clamping posts and drill your holes 1/16” over that. The one I built at work I drilled my holes on 4” centres at 13/16” because I made my clamps out of 3/4” round bar stock.

You know, I don't know why some of you got upset about his having his wife back up the car while he aligned the metal push rod against his tow receiver, if you noticed once aligned properly he backed off a good piece before he had her backup, so he had plenty of room to get out of the way, should something go amiss and from the video, I'd say this isn't the first time he's had her do something like this, so if he trusts her, why are you so angry about it, it's not you back there! Now my comment on the video is wow, what a hell of a big table. I built a welding table a few years ago, mine is only 2ft x 2ft and My top is made out of 1/32" sheet metal with some diamond wire steel underneath to lend it some more strength and I used 1 x 1" square tubing. I think I might have around $50.00 into mine and I'd guess my whole table might way 10 to 15lbs, but looking at your welds you've got a lot more experience than I do when it comes to welding. I never even tried to weld until I retired from the PA dept of corrections and I did 13.5 total years of military active duty before that and worked as computer operator/technician for 15 years or so, between them. So, my hats off to you, if you feel you need a table that large just to weld, you must be looking to do some big jobs. Of course my garage isn't even half as big as yours and my basement doesn't have the kind of room to have a table that large either, but if I did, I might want a table bigger than what I have, but it works fine for the small jobs I do. I'm going to keep watching your channel, if only to see you smack yourself in the head again, that was a hoot! I've done stuff like that before, but I don't think I'd have the balls to record it and put it out there for all to see, but it did make me feel better knowing I'm not the only one that has dumb shit attacks every once in a while. KUDOS!

please .... PLEASE!!! When using an angle grinder, throw the sparks towards yourself or in your own general direction. Blades catch frequently and un-expectedly and will always jump in the direction opposite the sparks. The way your using that angle grinder, ONE DAY IT'S GOING TO JUMP INTO YOUR STOMACH AND DIS-EMBOWL YOU!!! This is the most common most un-safe habit I see self taught people develop. By throwing the sparks towards that nice new leather smock your wearing, the grinder will jump AWAY from you when it catches. Please correct the habit? Please, for your own well-being?

If you're going to do this, spend less time talking and more time behaving like a professional. I can assure you no one really cares that you lost your job and no one cares about your grading scale. What people care about when they take the time to watch a video is learning something. A few tips: Wear appropriate clothing. Don't weld in shorts & tennis shoes. Don't try and handle material that weighs 500+ lbs without using a forklift and correct rigging. I'm thankful you didn't lose a foot or break a leg during that exercise. I could go on but that's enough punishment for your novice skills except for one last observation: A true welding table doesn't reside on castors and isn't made from thin-wall tube. It's a precision instrument that sits solid on a true floor. You could get by with 1/2" plate for the surface but ours have always been 1" with heavy wall square tube for legs. The surface is trued, (in some cases within .010") from end to end, side to side. And last, a true welding table weighs in at well over 3000 lbs. They're built not to move, flex, bow or change shape at all regardless of the amount of heat. You have constructed a 'hobby table', not a 'heavy duty welding table'. And learn how to remove mill scale. You will find welding much easier. Be safe if you're going to try this for a living.

We've all been a little hard on you because this video basically scares everybody to death because it appears it's only a matter of time before you get pinned or crushed. That point having been made, it's clear you have good hand/eye coordination, you are very talented, and you can do anything you set your mind to do--welding, framing houses, fixing anything broken. There are a lot of videos showing how to drill 5/8" holes in the top of your table in a grid pattern. I'm going to do that with my table as soon as I get a magnetic drill press and the annular cutters. Good luck and stay safe.

I was scared like everyone else, but figured you must have survived without major injury because you published the video. I'll just mention if you haven't already done so, please cut off and round those sharp corners. We don't want you or anyone else running into them. Some yellow or red paint on the perimeter would't hurt either. On a side note, having worked in small shops for much of my career, I've learned to never stand or sit up quickly after bending down low to the floor, eventually there is going to be a table or a clamp or something sharp over your head.

To move the steel plate all you need is some scrap steel pipes or timber dowels, a timber wedge to lift one side of the steel plate up. then push the dowels or steel tube under the plate using say three lengths of dowels or steel tube to roll your steel sheet anywhere on your garage room floor. The use of 1/2 inch plate seems awfully thick, 3/8 plate would be more than enough to support most projects at home. I hope this of some help to anyone thinking about how to move steel plate and thickness needed for a welding table.

3 years later...how are you liking those little caster wheels? And how often do you move the table around? I'm deciding on caster wheel size right now for my current build. Larger wheels are probably more convenient if you're moving it around, especially when having to roll over any measure of debris. Thanks for the video, still helpful 3 years later!

Glad to hear it was helpful. The table is heavy and not easy to move with the casters. I changed to 6” casters a couple of months ago and they work better but it is still a heavy table and does not move very easily. I do not need t move it much or very far. Check out some of my other videos, I moved and have a much larger shop now.
