To give understanding of the context of the current protests in New Zealand. NZ's most important constitutional document is the Treaty of Waitangi that was agreed back in 1840 as a partnership between Maori and the British Crown. It guaranteed Maori certain protections (particularly regarding rights to land and resources) while allowing formation of a British government, now the NZ government. In reality, since 1840 the NZ government violated the protections outlined in the Treaty of Waitangi. In more recent history in NZ, there has been establishment of principles in law plus an institution to go through a long process to attempt to redress these issues and their social outcomes. The current Bill essentially undermines these processes. Maori have not been consulted prior to the introduction of a Bill that directly contradicts long and well established conventions in NZ, plus the intention of the Treaty itself as a partnership. The Bill has been introduced by a minor political party (with 8% of the seats in parliament), due to the current MMP election process which often results in the major political parties negotiating coalition agreements with minor parties to gain a majority in the house.

The right think they can just reneg on a (peace) treaty because they have the numbers over the Maori. They may be surprised by the number of those who are not Maori who side with them. The right call it identity politics, but this is about the identity of New Zealand, which up until now, could proudly say they have lived in dignity with their first nations people.
@peterhind9401Ай бұрын
Thank you for your distorted propaganda on behalf of the Maori Party which in the latest political opinion polls scored 2.5% support of NZers. The theatrical posturing of the Maori Party MPs is a disgrace and simply an attempt to intimidate and shut down free speech. The Treaty Principles Bill states that all NZers are equal under the law and that noone should have more rights than others due to their ethnic background. That is called equality and democracy.

The power in her voice gives me chills Edit: many in the reply section are saying its cringe, noisy, embarassing, etc. So let me clear one thing that this is called Haka which is a cultural dance of New Zealand's Maori community and she is one of them. She did that as a warning to cancel the new rule which was not in their favor. She is not ashamed or embarassed about her culture like most of the people in here are. She is taking stand for her community and that power in her voice really got all the Maori people out there together. Just because you don't understand what she is saying doesn't mean she is talking nonsense. She is at that position for a reason and you aren't.

That’s democracy. But I don’t start a warchant because I respect the opponent’s rights. That’s also why demonstrating isn’t allowed in parliament. I don’t know why this isn’t common ground nowadays? @@poppi510I know what they said! I’m from New Zealand and Haka are a beautiful tradition of ours here🩷 What she says in the beginning is a call, something along the lines of “governor, respect whos land you are on” then they begin with possibly the most famous haka of all. I dont know its exact name, but its preformed by our rugby team before every game! worth a google! This one is more about self-empowerment than an actual declaration of war. The main lines are chanting “I will live! I will live! I will die!” There are haka that are war chants, but haka are also used for many other things. They are commonly used as a sign of respect at funerals, welcoming ceremonies ect. Understanding the political intricacies will help in understanding her and her parties anger in this situation, The Treaty Of Waitangi is the founding document of New Zealand and it claims that Māori people and the British Crown co-run the country. What was being passed is a law to cut out Māori people from that arrangement. When she chants in parliament it is far from childish, she is chanting for all Māori people and their rights to their land. She is chanting for her ancestors who had their land taken from them, and she is saying that she will not let it be taken from her. I’m not sure where you’re from, but its very easy to get in a western-centric view of the world and perceive something like this haka as childish or having no place in this setting, but this was a peaceful protest (one which got them banned from parliament for 24 hours in must add!) and at the very least when we have forced Māori people to have to fight for their rights in our turf, abiding by our culture, lets not ridicule them or put words in their mouth when they take back what little they have. If this haka was in any way obstructing the rights of any MP in that room, (they were asked for their votes on this issue so weren’t interrupting anyone) they would still be justified because what was being discussed is getting rid of Māori peoples right to their own country. Have a good day❤

How is that mental? It's a part of their culture. I'm sure you have traditions in your culture that other parts of the world don't understand either, but that doesn't make them "mental"

If you look into Triti it’s about keeping Māori land, governance, culture and traditions. Where separate health system for Māori, prioritise for jobs, receiving benefits etc coming from it’s a big question. That cause separation and people rights division for sure. All this need to be equal for all.

Bullshit, the English found that fighting with Māori wasn’t going well as they were skilled warriors and quickly learned how to utilise guns and developed trench warfare, and with the settlers being at the end of a very long and fragile supply line, they were not able to win by force like they had in many other parts of the world (a horror which should never have happened).
@JonathanRodriguez-bx3hmАй бұрын
@@johngillanders9694not true. you're the bullshitting one. 1.maori, they could use guns but not make them so that automatically limited their capability. it was the british might after all. 2.maori were susceptible to foreign diseases. so that's another form of warfare. please don't change the narrative as you see fit for your purpose. makes you look feeble minded. and if the maori were really winning? why treaty? does not make sense.
