I Love Drag Bars! My first time in Drag was at the 40 Watt Club in Athens, Ga. (Where R.E.M. got their start). I was with a mixed group of friends and the girls decided that they were going to dress up all of the guys for the club. Long story short, I ended up winning Miss Heinous 1999 at that club! I had an absolute blast! That night opened my mind to a lot of possibilities about life and what I was brought up to believe. It also opened my mind to learning more about myself. That was 20 years ago and I am 52 now. Far less of a party person, but with so many stories that I can hardly remember.

Never ever go to a drug bar alone unless you're invited by one of the entertainers otherwise you will 100% get roofied. Had a good friend in high school in theater club who became a drag queen after graduation. He invited me to a show at one of the bars. That's where I met his lover and found out that they were both bie. Everything was cool until I needed a place to crash for the night because I lived on the other side of the city. They were totally cool about not touching me, it was great. Consent is a giant deal to them. They actually ended up keeping me awake and giving me a makeover that was pretty awesome. I wish I had half their makeup skills. When I finally did get to sleep on the couch it was pretty cool. I don't really fall asleep easily in strange places but they were so respectful, it was really cool. I had had a minor crush on the guy who invited me. But after meeting his lover and finding out he was bie, that was just a bridge too far for me cuz I was young and barely out of high school. Explaining to my mother why I had a metric f-ton of makeup on when she hardly ever sees me in makeup at all was interesting.....

I haven't been to one since the pandemic began, but during the "before time" I used to visit a couple different bars on the way to or from other events (such as a concert, play, or social gathering). But the bar scene in the east coast, whose cities have decent transit and tend to be walkable, is quite different from anything in L.A., which is strictly a car city. So how did you get around? Did you hire an Uber or Lyft?
