Another fact about the poem ‘In Flanders fields’ is that it was written by a Canadian soldier, who had lost his dear friend on the front, and wrote the poem for him. The last line of the poem being: ‘we shall not see the poppy’s grow, in Flanders fields.’
@t5ruxlee2108 ай бұрын
Poppies grow best in constantly disturbed earth. The most disturbed earth behind the front itself were the temporary graves located near to field hospitals which received the bodies of those soldiers under treatment "who didn't make it".

Sie Harold Gillies is one of the most prolific plastic surgeons who developed groundbreaking surgical techniques during WWI which are still being used today. He and a handful of doctors practically invented modern plastic surgery. He is also famous for being a pioneer in gender reaffirming surgery on Michael Dillon (1946) and Roberta Cowell (1951). I recommend reading „The Facemaker“ by Lindsey Fitzharris if you want to learn about Gillies‘ work in the war. It’s a fascinating read.

@@knifegaf266 it is due to the fact that Canada's army were always one of the best trained. Also have been noted for their willingness to fight to the death (probably due to being one of the few countries not to have conscription, so every soldier was a willing participants). One of the most well known examples of this was Vimy Ridge. 100,000 soldiers we sent up the ridge with over 10,000 deaths, but they managed to do what neither the British or the French went able to do.

Third world countries did not mean any country who wasn't in NATO, the First world were democratic western countries, most of which just happened to be in NATO, for instance, most Scandinavian countries were neither in NATO nor were they communist, but they still were not considered Third world. The Second world countries were communist dictatorships, most of who were in the Warsaw pact. Third world referred to countries who weren't affiliated with either of those. Since the first two "worlds" were supported by either the USA OR the USSR so they were generally poor, many African dictators claimed to hate the USA just because the Soviets would dump thousands of weapons, mostly AK-47s and RPG-7s since they were cheap and several countries were allowed to build them. I was a tester for a weapon magazine and got to try AKs from different countries, I preferred the Romanian AK as did others but many chose the Chinese or Russian models. For many years though I owned a Chinese SKS until I got an insanely cheap AK-74 which is my favorite among all "Assault" weapons, though the AR15/M16 variants are far more accurate but AK/SKS variants are far more durable.

The Tiger in Fury was most definitely not the first time a Tiger was captured on film, there are DVDs available with over 2 hours of footage of Tigers in action in WWII. If you _mean_ in _popular_ films, then yes, even the Tiger in Saving Private Ryan is a mock up based on a T-54/55 hull.

Why has The Infographics Show been putting out lately so much of these "The Best of the Infographics" compilations? Are they having some problems behind the scenes making new videos?
