I couldn’t care less when a label makes a color variant limited edition direct to consumer exclusive. When they make a high quality sonically superior limited edition ( all while having a sub par copy available worldwide) record that’s a problem. Great sounding records should be widely available.

I agree Mike. The big problem is that now these labels have "closed off" their market. The buyers that are "in" are of course going to buy these audiophile direct pressings, but they're not expanding their buyer pool in any way, and eventually the established pool will buy less and less over time.
@about.the.music... Жыл бұрын
Especially if these same buyers get damaged copies from transit due to their careless and cheap packaging that goes through the mail to a residence instead of through a distributor and arriving for the most part minty to the record store. Future sales to this constituency will dry up fairly quickly. I've yet to see Rhino go the extra mile and package properly. Although not as good as In Groove, even Amazon now for the most part knows how to package vinyl records, with a carefully designed box. Rhino and Universal Music are happy to take your money and send you a damaged product. Good luck trying to rectify the damage -- customer service is also awful in this regard and they play games.

Well said. I think Rhino will take a while selling 5000 copies through one source. If you are in Europe postage and customs from the USA makes these expensive. When vinyl sales were minimal I was buying superb Warner AAA releases. I think a management change resulted in most of these being stopped just as vinyl sales took off. Also increasingly European versions of US AAA titles were being pressed from digital sources. It became a struggle for European buyers to find the AAA SH/KG Rumours.

As one of the average vinyl buyers you’re referring to, I 100% agree with what you’re saying. I’m getting to a point where I’m burnt out on all of these exclusive types of presses of records being released in limited quantities. I’d rather the focus shift towards making quality control for the mass produced reissues better overall as opposed to making one specific press of an album sound great and everything else can just be shit. Especially when I’m usually buying the cheaper presses because I can’t afford the high end “amazing” sounding presses of things that is exclusive to a website or a subscription service.

I agree though on these being aimed at a specific consumer, had I not gotten the email, I’d have no idea that this even existed. However videos like yours have exposed me to titles I had no way of knowing about otherwise. My local record store doesn’t carry any high end audio titles, they could probably order them I suppose, but they didn’t normally stock these titles. I imagine lots of indie stores, especially in small towns, are the same. So for these people, shopping online isn’t that odd and is probably the only way to get these titles.

Completely agree with this, Mike, you're spot on, we need to get back to quality presses as a default, where analogue sources are available, they should be used. Then digital reproductions of analogue recordings could be a cheap $20 option. Sure, still have AAA audiophile presses here and there, but you're so right, the masses need access to good pressings. My nephew has just got into vinyl, currently he's pretty much exclusively listening to modern hip hop which is all digitally recorded. That's fine, but as he grows, he's undoubtedly going to discover classic rock, good classical, maybe even jazz, and I want him to be able to get the good quality pressings, which by then with the way things are going will be astronomically expensive as they're in huge demand and low volumes. I'll leave my collection to him, but that's not the point.

The frustrating thing about Rhino is they will often times have multiple different masterings/quality reissues of the same title. A few examples that come to mind are their reissues of Television's Marquee Moon, The Stooges debut and Fun House, Love's Forever Changes, and the Ramones first few albums all of which had all analog well done reissues which were later substituted with digitally mastered pressings usually without any indicator. Some records were initially issued with high quality tip on jackets and then later changed to flimsy constructed covers. Then there are records which Rhino continues to reissues all analog like Talking Heads first 5 albums, and I believe also T. Rex Electric Warrior too to name a couple examples. I just wish there were some more transparency between the reissues they do because when I was first getting into vinyl I ended up getting some of the digitally mastered records before learning and having to seek out the older pressings on the second hand market. Why does it have to be so convoluted? I believe it should be mandatory to have the source information somewhere clearly stated. I am not even against digitally mastered LPs, I remember when I had the reissues of Wire's first 3 albums they all said they were remastered from hi res digital and they all sounded amazing too.

I'm sure a lot of people would buy this title, but now, if they want it they will the to pay the inflated prices. The same goes for exclusive releases sold by artists/bands only sold on their website, it sells out in a few minutes and most people that want it miss out on it. If they want to do an initial special release then have a standard drop later that would be the way to go. Often it probably cuts into their profits.

That the Cars are one of my favorite bands, and the lack of audiophile Cars records, along with Kevin Gray at Coherent involvement became a no-brainer for me. I imagine that the secondary market will see a smattering of these. Hopefully not alot, because I don't like to see the "Flippers" reaping this kind of award. Maybe that is why it is a direct from Rhino product. Then too, it could be just a toe in the water. That if things go well, Rhino will involve the Record stores in this enterprise. Like it should be, record stores, plus great Mastering , manufactured by a reputable company, would be a win for everyone.

Lacquers are made from chemical compounds, those chemicals literally evaporate over time through chemical reaction, they degrade quite quickly if not stored appropriately. IF they’re stored properly in an airtight container though, they can last for decades. The Pink Floyd debacle is a strange one, why they won’t do a triple A cut is a mystery, I would have thought the 50th anniversary would have been the perfect opportunity but perhaps the original tapes, lacquers and metal parts are in fact all gone. Or they simply believe it wouldn’t sound any better over the digital masters they’ve been using for years.

What is worse, Rhino selling direct to consumer for $40.00 or Chad Kassem selling over priced boxed vinyl for $125-150.00??!!! Most people just getting into vinyl and the general audience you’re speaking about would not pay that much for a record, and most could not even afford it. Not the plating and pressing once the lacquer is ready and plated for replication. Tapes vs Files. Material fragility and limited preservation vs. flexible manipulation and convenient storage of bits and bytes. That is a major rationale for the creation of the file in the first place. Blue Note is handling their own tapes, and releasing, not licensing, the product out. That goes into it too as to how they want to go about handling the tape and cutting the lacquer(s). MoFi was allowed to work with the tape on a limited basis and on Sony's terms, make their file, then pack up and go home.

$79.96 order doesn’t get you free shipping at RHINO? Me thinks I’ll pass.

Do you do your work for free? Why do people always think they earn a discount? $79.96 c’mon…..

@@pieterbalk-ht7kq This is all profit for RHINO… no middleman. They can’t offer a small discount on shipping if you order both? I’m a poor old man. Just sayin’

Thank you for making this video..i personally feel more people are never going to get into vinyl as a viable audio experience because of manufactured limited runs..Erc Anolog productions and even Mofi need to come to grips with the gact that longevity is the key not quick bucks at the expense of a format that lets be honest was dead 10 yrs ago..i fear vinyl will go away again but this time at the hands of their own rather then competing formats

Q: “I don’t know who Rhino are serving by doing this?” A: Themselves.

The one MOFI Cars album I have listened to thus far sounds great. If the rest sounds like that they are one of the best MOFI releases in my opinion (a big if).

these days it seems to be about, how can we keep reissuing the same records slightly differently so people will keep buying them over and over.

While I don't care about Rhino records I also don't care about records stores. Where I live nothing is more inaccessible than a record store. 99% of my collection over a thousand records was purchased online. I'm a two hour drive from a record store in any direction. From my perspective record stores represent exclusivity, a buyers market that's more niche than online buyers.

I agree totally. I love the hifi jazz, but not everyone likes jazz. Mofi's latest one step release are pretty "med", I'm not into hair metal or the eagles. Probably like most things, it comes down to money. Most people who are looking for these records are more likely older and therefore higher disposable income. Although to your point they could make more producing a high quantity items.
