Imagine they manage to figure all the stuff out and start selling kits you can convert an old cb into an electric bike in a day or three of rebuilding. Would be epic.

You're easily impressed. All the parts to do this are readily available off the shelf. The conversion process is well documented.
@vengefulrat30533 жыл бұрын
@@Zomby_Woof It's a matter of different factors. One, I don't have the time to go through a process of error finding like this. Two, I don't have the technical knowledge to run the math for most of the battery and controller stuff. Three, I don't have the tools to do all of that. Saying I should go do this on my own is like you saying you'll manufacture your own aspirin every time you have a headache. So yes, I'll be bloody impressed because I know, I can't build this.
@Zomby_Woof3 жыл бұрын
@@vengefulrat3053 The whole ebike ecosphere is cracking right now. But the approach these guys are taking is...weird - and hasn't been particularly productive. Some channels are successful because they offer great content - others like this one - they seem to have tapped into that 'famous for being famous' vein. for people wanting to acquire an ebike, there are two options: buy or build. For people who are serious about getting the most bang for their buck, or are looking for a high performance option tailored to the needs, building is the only option. Even models like the Sur Ron are mass market compromises. Don't get me wrong - it's an impressive bike, but it still represents trade offs chosen by someone who isn't me - and a bike is too personal an item for it not to reflect my priorities. You aren't wrong in wanting a less intensive process than welding your own frame and building your own battery pack. But there is a middle ground. The type of kit mentioned is already available from the people who do the math vet products for reliability. Qs Motors is the leading supplier of ebike motors, with their QS 205 and 273 being the hub motors of choice. They also offer packages at varying power levels and degrees of completeness. If you have a trusted friend knowledgeable about the technology, or are willing to invest a single afternoon in cramming, and just want to write one check, they can hook you up with motor, controller, battery, bms and all the parts needed to bolt your own rig together. If one is totally non mechanical, it's a project for a long weekend - if you've changed the alternator in your car, it's a one day job. The motors are available bare, or laced into a wheel style of your choice. If you aren't coming from a bike background, I would get the motor/wheel prebuilt, or if you have a particular wheel that QS doesn't offer, just have a local shop build the wheel. Truing up a rim isn't rocket surgery, but it cab be frustrating the first time you do it. I'm going the whole diy battery route, because I'm price sensitive and the battery is so critical to how the finished product will perform. For $720 and a little sweat equity, I can pick up the components for a battery that is more than I'll ever need. 84v full charge - 72v nominal - putting out 1200 amps. The controller will be the limiting factor. I don't *need* that much power - it's just phenomenal donor batteries. I'll most likely just opt for building a 24AH unit that still pumps out 600 watts. I'm building a dual motor fat tire with enough power to haul a small trailer through sand and mud. Good luck whatever route you choose.
@vengefulrat30533 жыл бұрын
@@Zomby_Woof well damn that's a lot of info. But insightful. The thing is, I'm not useless when it comes to learning how to do the stuff. I can figure it out. I've built some bikes before, not built a motor though. I've done electrical on bikes. So I have that back ground. Just last night I had to put on new sprockets and chains and bushes on my bike. So I can do that. My biggest issue comes down to having the tools for the job. Welders, wrenches, benches, grinders, all of those I don't own. Just your basic run of the mill, mismatch toolbox. And of course, as I said, time. Between work and a family life, having the time to do it all, well not always possible. Initial invest also is something to ponder on but I know it pays off in the long run.
@Zomby_Woof3 жыл бұрын
@@vengefulrat3053 You'd have no problem installing a conversion kit then. I get the time budgeting. But you have enough skills it wouldn't take very long unless you were going full customization. Of course, every project hits snags.

@jmcsoldo3 жыл бұрын
Very cool! Lord Curt is smart but Inja, you have some in your repertoire as well! For future speed tests, buy a RPM reader to get an immediate readout. It's $15-20 on Amazon and you WILL use it again with the stuff you do. That should alleviate having to film it and count revs. To find MPH, just take wheel RPM x pi x wheel diameter (in inches) and then divide by 1056 and 💥...MPH. To find desired gearing, take the speed you want divided by the speed you're currently at and then multiply that number by the number of sprocket teeth you currently have. That will tell you how many sprocket teeth you want in order to get your desired speed. Also, you had to get this huge input sprocket made, but did you do any research on whether there was a smaller output sprocket option? Always more bang for the buck.

Hey Lord Curt and Inja. I'm doing a similar build with the ME1507 and the same controller. I've had issues with the controller cutting out and I'm also getting a lot of hall sensor errors. Two things I've found that help: 1)Make sure your controller and motor sine/cosine sensor grounds/shields are solid. 2)Increase your throttle acceleration time to 15 - 20. It's still not 100% but it makes things better. I hope its not just because the Kelly controller is crap. When I turn on the regen I get that grinding noise you described. I'm doing a build on my channel too, inspired by you guys. Keep up the good work and let me know if you resolve the issue.

Don't forget a proper fast charger with a j1772 port. Battery nerd talk: imo the second battery shouldn't have been soldered, it should be welded with a good DC welder like a kweld. I worry if there was too much heat into the cells that would damage them. Oh, and the first 14v pack. She cooked. Would not trust it on the highway. I think those cells are ready for a fire, so maybe strap a large fire extinguisher on the back for the first few highway tests.
