Hi! Looking at the full recipe I see that you are using 2% Salicylic Acid (SA) and 6% Propanediol which is a 1:3 ratio. However, in your other video re: "Working with Acids", you mentioned needing a 1:10 ratio to properly dissolve SA and prevent recrystallization. Just curious if a 1:3 ratio is truly effective or if the ratio is dependent on the brand/quality of SA and Propanediol? Thank you!
@theinstituteofpersonalcare6401
@theinstituteofpersonalcare6401 2 жыл бұрын
There are other stabilising factors in this formula that assist. The video where I show just the 1:10 ratio is where it is a very simple liquid/water type formula. Also check your final pH and keep it low to prevent issues too. Of course, make the sample and find out/test for yourself. Hope this helps! You can learn how to formulate with salicylic acid (along with many other acids and actives) in our Certificate in Advanced Cosmetic Science, as well as how to conduct stability testing to check this. personalcarescience.com.au/CosmeticScience/CertificateinAdvancedCosmeticScience-478/

I wouldn’t recommend a scrub for the hair, the particles would be hard to remove, its bad enough after a day at the beach! You could make a foaming product with the salicylic acid just make sure your surfactant will suit the low pH (some don’t) and you will need to stabilise the product well so its doesn’t thin/lose viscosity over time. Learn how to make appropriate surfactant and stabilising selections for this type of formula with our Diploma of Personal Care Formulation: personalcarescience.com.au/CosmeticScience/DiplomaofPersonalCareFormulation-479/ Happy formulating!

@@kristiankarrman6974 these polymers are all synthetic and unlike thickeners such as guar gum their bacterial count is little to none. Even still, having that much salicylic acid at pH 3 mixed in later on would almost disinfect the entire batch let alone preservation!
@theinstituteofpersonalcare6401
@theinstituteofpersonalcare6401 4 жыл бұрын
The pH is still above 3; which means some growth can occur. We need to make sure products are safe for consumer use for the whole shelf life and some opportunistic organisms can grow even at this low pH. There fore you need to use a preservative still to protect against this.
