The way you explain is so eloquent and easy even for a beginner who just interested in making their own sample product. This helped me to clean up my already thought out product list and I def made a sheet on the List A ingredients list now I’m changing my list to phases and changing my liquid water percent to 100 rather than the total grams to Oz ratio I originally had because I can just adjust if I already start with 100%=100g =3.52 oz and that’s enough for sample product plus all the other percent additions of extracts and such

If the preservative is heat resistant (and you are heating the formula) then you could add it at the start; a lot of times it gets added at the end so that the product has formed and then it gets added, and final pH adjustments are done to suit the preservative and actives.

Should the water phase always appear as phase A in o/w emulsion? Is there any rule in regarding the phases?
@theinstituteofpersonalcare64013 жыл бұрын
You should phase your materials and write the method in a good flowing order - what makes sense? Then it helps avoid human error when the formula actually gets put together. If you write your phases such that the first listed phases don't get processed first, it can get confusing/human error can occur .

Does determining PAO periods always include tests for stability for specific actives in a formula? So testing to what extend eg Retinol or Ascorbic Acid in a formula degrades during that PAO period, or are only bacterial/yeast growth, pH-changes, shifting test etc mandatory.

You will also benefit from our Beginners Cosmetic Science workshop series, which will help explain and show this, as well as the grams and % aspect. What kind of water is most suitable for.making cosmetics? Distilled water or deionised water?
@theinstituteofpersonalcare64013 жыл бұрын
It depends slightly on the supplier but they are usually the same (you may need to double check specific to the brand of water you choose to use). Distilled water is usually boiled and then recondensed, to destroy micro-organisms, then deionized to remove all ions. Deionised water is one with ions removed, but they usually also boil it too. Please double check with your supplier but they are usually both treated in the same way, just called different names. 57% refers to the content of that material in the formula (out of 100%), please refer to the screen or email us for formula details: info@personalcarescience.com.au So if you are making 100g, you would then measure 57g. If you are making 200g, you would still measure 57%, which is 114grams. You will also enjoy this workshop (first video is free and will really help you understanding this): personalcarescience.com.au/CosmeticScience/BeginnersCosmeticScienceWorkshops-469/ Happy formulating!

do you make your batches by oz or grams?
@Karamelmocha323 жыл бұрын
example: 250gram batch body butter 45%mango butter 30%coco butter 5%coconut oil 5%olive oil 5%jojoba oil 5%avocado oil 4%vitamin E 1%essential oil All of these percentages added up equal 100%. Your equation should look like this Percentage ÷ by 100 × the batch size. Check out detailed example below 45 ÷ 100 = .45 × 250g = 112.5 30 ÷ 100 = .3 × 250g =75 5 ÷ 100 = 0.05 × 250g = 12.5 5 ÷ 100 = 0.05 × 250g = 12.5 5 ÷ 100 = 0.05 × 250g = 12.5 5 ÷ 100 = 0.05 × 250g = 12.5 4 ÷ 100 = 0.04 × 250g = 10 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01 × 250g = 2.5 To check your work you add all answers together and they should equal up to 250 which is your batch. Now you know how many grams of each ingredient you need. If you're sizing up your batch size your percentages would stay the same Just increase your batch size and follow the same steps above to find out how much of each ingredient you would need. If we size this up to 750grams your equation would be 45 ÷100 = .45 ×750 = 337.5 so you would need 337.5 grams of mango butter.

How do we convert from volume to percent

Hi Demi, Belinda suggests that you could: -Measure everything out -Weigh each item -Then convert the weight into percentage. I also suggest rewatching and pausing as you go. I hope this helps. Happy Formulating!

How is water at 100% if we are trying to get the batch to 100%?
@theinstituteofpersonalcare64014 жыл бұрын
Water is not AT 100%, it is TO 100%. Please watch the video again, you subtract all other inputs from 100%, and that gives you the remainder = water. Ie water is added up TO 100%. To learn this in more detail, please watch this video: personalcarescience.com.au/CosmeticScience/BeginnersCosmeticScienceWorkshops-469/

What do you mean when you say 100% by weight
@theinstituteofpersonalcare64012 жыл бұрын
The total formula needs to equal 100% by weight inputs only, not by a combination of volume + weight. Please watch through to the end you will see it explained. why your formula starts with : A : TO 100 % WATER ... I thought that the formula should add to 100 % INCLUDING ALL THE INGREDIENTS and not only one INGREDIENT. What do you mean by : TO 100 % WATER ? THANKS :)
@theinstituteofpersonalcare64012 жыл бұрын
We write 'to 100%' so that when you subtract everything from 100% you are left with the water content.
