I’ve come across some anhydrous formulations that contain fruit powders, such as beetroot powder in a body butter, but it’s always noted that a preservative isn’t needed because the formulation contains no water. I just want to clarify if that’s incorrect and a preservative is indeed needed? also thank you for all the information you provide, safely formulating recipes should be highlighted more from other creators

It depends on the ingredients in the body butter , usually a butter doesn’t need a preservative because there is no water that can cause germs. Powders go well in butter.

If the powder will dissolve in oil it would be fine to use - and then a preservative would not be needed in an anhydrous formula, as you don’t need preservative when no water is present.

I would like to add that the pH of your formula can also affect the colour of the natural additive. These natural powders will change colour whether the system is acidic or basic. Also none of these are approved to be labeled as "colorant", and should be represented on QQ's as 'emollient'.

Hi, Belinda. What is your advice to prevent color change (oxidation) among herbal extracts, such as teas, other than simply reducing the quantity used? Is airless packaging really the only way to go? Thank you.
@theinstituteofpersonalcare6401
@theinstituteofpersonalcare6401 2 жыл бұрын
It would depend on what else is present, and how much of the ‘tea’ is used. I would recommend using a glycerin based herbal extract instead, and you wouldn’t have a lot of these issues (where it is suitable to the extract and formula, of course). You can learn a lot more about how to improve the shelf life of your formulations with our Certificate in Advanced Cosmetic Science, which also includes a quality and stability unit - to conduct your own stability testing, interpret results and then identify and fix these sorts of issues: personalcarescience.com.au/CosmeticScience/CertificateinAdvancedCosmeticScience-478/

Can you strain powder herbal and fruit extracts like it's a tea and add it to a formula like shampoo and conditioner? Will it have the same or similar effect as a liquid extract you purchase from cosmetic supplier? I ask because I notice those extracts have a high percentage of solvents, but very little of the actual extract which is why I wanted to make my own. Of course, I will be using a proper preservative system.

thank you so much for this great information! I would like to add some powdered botanical extracts to a powdered clay mask. my MSDS sheets say maximum 2%. If it is going to be an anhydrous product, where the customer adds water on their own to make the mask....then I can just add the powder as is and not worry about ph level or preservatives? Thank you!!
@theinstituteofpersonalcare6401
@theinstituteofpersonalcare6401 2 жыл бұрын
Potentially, yes, but that 2% may not be suitable when adding in a concentrated form like this. Always run some trials to make sure it will work appropriately for the final product. You won’t need to worry about preservatives but you may need to check the pH of your finished product, when mixed with water as it is to be applied, to make sure it is skin compatible. Please watch our FREE Masterclass, lesson 2 in particular, where I cover this concept for a dry powder product: personalcarescience.com.au/Workshops/CosmeticFormulationFundamentalsMasterclass-7441/

All material I've read say that if the herbs, flowers, and fruit are dried there's no water content therefore no need for preservatives. All my formulas are either plant butters or oil based and I only used essential oils or absolutes. No water in any of those. Now I want to diversify and use powdered dried flowers like hibiscus and blue pea using 190 proof alcohol to extract most of the benefits, which I'll macerate in a carrier oil for 4 weeks in a paper bag on my windowsill. Using the alcohol will give me about 5% water content, which I hope will be lost via evaporation. Some articles claim the alcohol helps preserve the formula. Would Vitamin E or rosemary essential oil be a solution? Now I have to worry about the Ph of my formulas. Fruit extracts would be acidic so I'm going to avoid them. Mind you a high Ph can be just as damaging to the skin. Could you please recommend any books that would help me in my new venture quest? Thanks for your insights.

When writing out a formula using powdered ingredients such as zinc oxide, how do we know what percentage to write if the ingredient dissolves when added to the oil/water phase? For example if i've weighed 10g of zinc oxide powder and dissolve it into 90g of oil base. Would this still mean that 10% of the formula is zinc oxide and 90% is the oil base?
