As always Corbin, thanks for keeping us updated on all things Hyundai, Kia and Genesis Evs. Though I love my 2022 I5 Limited, like a lot of us I am getting tired of the trips to the dealer. At the dealer I bought my I5 from, it takes over a month for me to get a service appointment and I called just after seeing this video. First available appointment was January 3rd. Called another dealer who said middle of December. In October my 12 volt started to die (like a lot of us) and when I called the dealer they said I could bring it in for them to test it the following week, but made no promises about when they could replace it. I ended up buying the AGM Weize (works great thanks again Corbin) and installing it myself. I did reach out to customer care and they sent me a check for the battery.

What exactly did they do? It sound's like it's a faulty ICCU (which is a large piece of hardware the size of a large King Size Pillow) is determined defective now, is not fixed via software, but a hardware change, that sound's rather involved, taking hours ????

Just last week, I had my 2023 Ioniq5 12V battery replaced under warranty because it wouldn't hold a charge anymore after I used the compressor that was included with the car to inflate a slow leaking tire. They also did a recall that had something to do with Level 2 charging. I guess I'll have to take it in again. Nice that Hyundai is staying on top of this, but it sure would be nice if they could program those ICCUs over the air...

Ironically, my ICCU died 2 days after this recall was announced. Fortunately my dealer had one in stock, so it was fixed in 1 day. At least I managed to get the updated software at the same time!

What a coincidence. I just got my '22 I5 SEL back from the dealer after having the Iccu replaced. They had it 2 months and tried several different fixes (replace charger door!) before the final fix. Hyundai national got involved and worked with the dealer to find the final solution. I was given a brand new Sonata loaner and was reimbursed by national for the week's rental cost before they gave me the loaner. The problem announced itself when I tried to charge with my level 2 home charger. It would begin to charge and then 'click' the charging would halt. My local service dept was mostly unfamiliar with EV repairs, it seemed, so they depended on national to steer them to the solution. This was the first problem the car had given me in over 2 years. Hats off to national for making what could have been a real pain in ass into a mostly painless process. If this happens to your I5, go straight to national and request that they monitor the repair process. The dealer was Phillips Hyundai in Bradley, IL.

I put a BMS on the OEM lead-acid 12-volt battery. It cycles once per day. 1) This is not normal. No wonder it does not last the typical 5 years as a typical “starting” lead-acid battery would. A deed-cycle battery instead of a starting battery would be a better fit for the 12-volt battery. 2) Regardless, something is draining this 12-volt battery. Therefore, I’d be real surprised if the ICCU charging is the root cause.

I just finished an eight service adventure with my 22 Ionic 5 RWD. It started with my inability to slow charge my Ionic5. It would charge DC (level 3) no problem but level 1 and 2 charging would not work. It would start the charge for about 10 seconds and then announce the charge "terminated". I took the car into my local Hyundai dealer 3 times over 3 weeks then, on my fourth visit they said they needed the vehicle on site so they could investigate further using external (national) resources. I was given a loaner. Finally following 6 weeks of work I was informed that the ICCU had to be replaced and this would require an addition 2 weeks of work and testing. I got my Ionic 5 back in full working order.

Thank you for posting this, I'm currently in the market for a used IONIQ 5, so I'm following all of this closely, but I'm confused still on what the latest recall still means: Does it appear in your opinion that if the dealership's determine your IONIQ 5 (either 2022 or 2023 model year) has some type of ICCU defect, it's more likely now, your getting a entirely new ICCU , right away , or do you still face an uphill battle with long drawn out software patches first?

Corbin, thank you for staying on top all our issues and presenting solutions. Really appreciate it. I just did the recall. In my case, there were no codes and they did the software update. My car was needing jumpstart over the past 2-3 weeks and the voltage went around 9.7V. Once it is running, voltage held around 13.5-14.3. Do you know how the 12V is charged while the car is being driven? Is that done by ICCU? I asked this to the service people at the dealership and they were throwing jumbo mumbo at me. So basically they are clueless. reason is, this past weekend i jumpstarted the car and drove it for 60 miles. I tried starting it back up after 15 minutes and the car was completely dead.

I'm in the US, and just had my recall handled today (2024 Limited). It took two hours. They said the time depended on their network bandwidth to download the software fix. The repair order showed that they did not have to replace the ICCU (quantity zero for part 36400-1XAA0-QQH, ICCU ASSY). They ordered a high-voltage fuse (375F2-GI040-QQH), which I assume I'll have to come back to have replaced. My service advisor gave me two tips: don't park the car with less than 20% battery unless you start charging it right away (so that the 12V battery doesn't go dead), and also to turn the headlights on during the daytime. This drains the 12V battery, which triggers the drive battery to recharge it and keep it healthy. He also warned against car washes that clean the undercarriage, because that's where the big battery lives. He says it's well-protected, but still... Great advice!

It seems like every 6 months that I have scheduled service due with my GV60 there is yet again another recall. The upside is that Genesis still picks up my car and leaves me a loaner at my convenience so no real skin off my nose at least while I still have warranty coverage. I suspect I will be cutting the car loose at that point if they can't get their recalls under control. Last service visit I asked my service advisor about any resolution to the AC charge port overheating issue, nope, apparently Hyundai still working on it. Really its been 2 years. I kind of feel like they are tossing out questionably useful software band aids for clearly significant hardware problems and hoping it buys they more time to kick the can further down the road.
@trainingtheworld50934 күн бұрын

EVs are still pretty new tech. The Mach-E had the HVBJB recall which is a very similar issue. Tesla has had plenty of issues over the years too. For that matter, combustion cars have recalls all the time too -- Toyota just recalled 100,000 vehicles for machining debris in the engine which can cause loss of power. It's a pain but I don't feel (yet) like this is a reason not to buy Hyundai/Kia. You can make your own call of course. Nothing wrong with waiting a few years to get an EV, the tech will be more mature and you can also get a model with NACS (assuming you're in North America).

I was there for a previous recall on the tire inflator kit that they didn't get replaced due to our hurricanes. They said they could start right away on the ICCU work but might not finish it today since it was early afternoon when I dropped off the car. I think they jumped on it right away because they were a little embarrassed at having dropped the ball on the inflator recall. 🤫 I've never had any issues with the ICCU and have 12,300 miles on it since buying it in April. @@MrHockey1720-G Corbin said all dealers know about it, but I don't think they all dealers get updates right away. Some might not get it till January when Hyundai mails out letters to affected owners. My local dealer sells lots of EVs, so they probably get first dibs on that stuff. I didn't go in asking for it, but they told me I was "on the list." The blacked out display isn't a 12v issue. The root cause for a couple I've seen reported were caused by a failure to apply thermal gel to the heatsink on the gpu. One instance had a plastic film that was supposed to be removed, but wasn't, preventing proper cooling of the chip leading to periodic screen blackouts which recovered after the chip cooled enough.

At this point, Im convinced there’s zero safety margin for the dielectrics in the ICCU. They can probably tolerate 700V in theory but those pesky inductances will cause spikes above that when it tries to stop charging and the dielectric eventually fails. They probably found the worst corner cases and “patched” it with software to get the spikes low enough that the EV9 can live with its lower voltage. I’d guess that each subsequent software update is helping more of the corner cases which will make the ICCUs last longer but I doubt they’ll be reliable long term, akin to ford transmissions…

So the fix is a simple software update. Why can't Hyundai/Kia fix it with a simple over the air software update like Tesla and Rivian do?
@scott44274 күн бұрын
25+ cars can. Older cars don’t.
@ev_kimchi4 күн бұрын
only the newest or refreshed eGMP cars with ccNC infotainment can update all of the car's software OTA. I'm sure HMG regrets not having this functionality from the outset, the multiple ICCU recalls at the dealer for 200,000 cars must be costing them a fortune
@sprockkets4 күн бұрын
I don't want a car that can do ota stuff for everything. Rivian already botched that up once. Even tesla botched an update for cyberturds.
@lanceareadbhar4 күн бұрын
@@ev_kimchi This is also frustrating as a 2024 Ioniq 6 owner as they marketed OTA updates as being a new feature that was available on the Ioniq 6, but then every recall still has me coming in to the dealership for a software update that I assumed would have been an OTA update. Thanks though for finally helping me understand why my Ioniq 6 doesn't get these additional OTA updates.

Hi, I got my UK version Model Year 2025 (MY25) IONIQ 5 N Line S AWD last week. It’s great. With a rear windscreen wiper! I bought a magnetic sunglasses holder and a charging port lights blocker from you on Etsy. The sunglasses holder is great, but the item to hide the lights during charging does not (a) cover the newly-designed charger lights, and (b) won’t fit anywhere when you close the charge door… it’s just not the right shape for the new design. MY25 items from your on-line shop will need to be amended/redesigned to fit. Thought you’d like to know. Jim

I didn't see the Ioniq 5N listed as an affected vehicle either. Unless it's considered to be an Ioniq 5 (I feel like it's often listed as a different car but maybe they just consider it a trim level).

Boy, those ICCUs are sure a tricky piece of equipment. I guess we can only hope that THIS time they fix the problem, once and for all. Shall we hold our breath? One question I have is: if the amber light on my dashboard periodically turns on, indicating that the 12V battery is being charged, does that mean my ICCU is working okay? Do those whose ICCUs have failed NOT see that amber light ever? Maybe it's a way to check?
@lanceareadbhar4 күн бұрын
Interesting idea as I see the amber light on often and have yet to have this issue owning two different Ioniqs (2022 Ioniq 5 RWD and 2024 Ioniq 6 AWD). This probably isn't the last time unfortunately given how often this happens, but what is surprising to me is how they haven't been able to eliminate certain EVs that were manufactured during any of the time periods from this recall or excluded any EVs based on having any of previous recalls done. This feels like more of a doctor visit every 9-12 months just to check that everything looks good and here's your medicine that should keep you healthy for at least another 9-12 months, but maybe longer if we're lucky.

I definitely buy into the theory that this is Hyundai’s way of delaying NHTSA from fining them and frankly eventually leading to the buyback of these models similar to what VW had to do. The constant tweaking of software won’t fix anything, it’s a bad design and I am unclear there is any fixing that can be done or it would be. Think about it, it’s been a year or more now and there have been multiple updates. Do you really think Hyundai engineering hasn’t been able to figure out the real fix? I call BS completely here. It’s a shell game of updates. For example: I owned a Kia optima years ago. Hyundai messed up the engines and left metal debris in those when manufacturing them (Hyundai sonata too). They literally gave everyone who had problems a complete engine overhaul for free. If they had a solution to the iccu issue they would do it.

How long does this take? Wondering if I can wait for it to be done or if it's a drop off and pick up later kind of deal.

If it just needs a software update you can wait for it. But if they find the ICCU needs replacement that will take much longer. Unfortunately there’s no way to know until they actually run the diagnostic.

YES -- we have an Ioniq 5 *and* EV6 GT .... Hyundai already has our VIN listed as needing the recall, but even though the EV6 also needs it, KIA hasn't attached the recall to our VIN yet. Your new ICCU might not need replacing, but you definitely need the new logic to properly protect it from damage due to thermals and on-off arcing

Do you have the Hyundai recall pdf that would list the new ICCU version number? I need that before going into my dealer. Last time when I went in for the VCMS L2 charging fix, they claimed there was no update available and marked the campaign as completed. I had to raise hell as the software version was still the old one. They finally took me in the back and showed me on their tablet where it popped up in auto mode but supposedly the tech was trained to ignore and go into manual mode and did not see anything. Basically had to show the tech and service manager how to do the update lol.

This won't be the last ICCU recall I bet given the stories on reddit. I'm pretty sure they'll eventually do a recall to replace the ICCU with a new model with less faults at some point otherwise they will lose money constantly dealing with these ICCU recalls.
@dperreno4 күн бұрын
I think you're right. Up until now they've been tweaking the software so that the hardware doesn't break, but the real fix needs to be a new hardware design.

@dperreno now what would be REALLY great is if they somehow not only change to a better ICCU but enable higher charge speeds at tesla super chargers than the current 100 kw limit for first gen cars
@dperreno4 күн бұрын
@@eddi3x3 My understanding is that that limit is more a function of the supercharger design (500V max vs. 1000V max on CCS stations) than it is a problem with our cars. This is because all Teslas have 400V battery packs. Our EVs have 800V battery packs. kzbin.info/www/bejne/sInQZnaDZrCkrq8#

you'll probably get stranded if you do. Your car gives no symptoms (or, at most, you see your 12v die) before it craps itself to a stop.
@lanceareadbhar4 күн бұрын
Only time will tell if newer cars will have it fixed permanently. I understand the frustration as I've had two different an Ioniqs since December 2021 which have all required a visit to a dealership for the update. I even got the 2024 Ioniq 6 as that was marketed to have more OTA capabilities assuming that I wouldn't need to go in for these updates anymore. The chances of failure are still very low compared to the amount of EVs manufactured and this is my only complaint so in another sense I feel very lucky that this is it given that it is always a crapshoot when buying a 1st generation car.
