Still recommend to others in this price range who live in cold climates the Niro EV over the Kona since Hyundai hates specifically the US for whatever reason and wont let you get a heat pump for improved efficiency. Heck, its not even a North America market problem as Canada has had the heat pump in the Kona EV for years now.

@AdamPranda11 ай бұрын
@@bnovak2937 From previous experience driving a Bolt EV, which doesn't have a heat pump, the steady state difference in power draw is ~1-4kW depending on the temperature. So for longer drives the efficiency difference will be more pronounced. As for the US trim differences, it's always been about the profit margin. Hyundai cuts a ton of features here to try to be competitive on price, rather than options/features. Kia is significantly more competitive on features but is slightly more expensive, but at least you are given the option to choose.

No heat pump? With our current weather, I am pulling almost 7kW to keep my 2023 Ioniq 5 warm inside. Really cannot imagine a resistance heater that big in a car.
@TheIoniqGuy11 ай бұрын
All Ioniq 5s actually also have a resistance heater. The heat pump only works down to a certain point where it begins to slowly not work as efficiently and then the resistance heater will compensate. The resistance heater will also be used on startup to rapidly heat the cabin and then transition to the heat pump to maintain
@leslarson264211 ай бұрын
Correct and I understand the limitations of heat pumps. Basically, once the ambient temperature drops below a certain temperature, say 10F, a heat pump is no better than a resistive heater, losing its thermal advantage. But the heat pump still produces heat, which is added to the resistive heater. If there is only a resistive heater, it better be really large to compensate for the lack of the heat pump. Like I have said, I have seen almost 7 kW on my climate display. That is a lot of power. Thanks for the reply.

What's the charging curve for this model year 2024 Kona Electric? Its max 100 kW charging speed, how long is it maintained in ideal conditions? eg, for a brief period , say around 50-60% SOC, or longer, say 20-70%?
@colinsullivan841611 ай бұрын
Teslabjorn has videos showing the charging performance. It’s pretty good! It starts at 90Kw below 10% SOC and slowly creeps up higher and higher as the battery pack voltage increases. Its true peak is at 63% SOC at 100kw or slightly above. So you can think of it as basically flat 90-100kw all the way to 63%. Then it drops to 79Kw until it reaches 69%. Above that it drops below 50Kw. All this to say is that they are emphasizing the wrong charging time in their marketing materials. It’s 10-80% in 43 min, but 10-70% in just 27min. 16 extra minutes for the extra 10 percent is a waste in my opinion. Get back in the road at 70 and you’ll spend overall less time charging over multiple stops.

At least add a page to center section for those that would like that
@colinsullivan841611 ай бұрын
I agree that centering speed would be nice. One thing I did notice on my test drive was that navigation directions appear in the instrument cluster both for built-in navigation and Apple CarPlay. Does the Ioniq 5 software do that?
@TheIoniqGuy11 ай бұрын
Oh really? Ioniq 5 only shows built in nav directions in the instrument cluster

I know you like the front charge port but when you drive in winter I think the door might get iced in. Plus with slush and dirt you would get your hand dirty when opening the door. I think you get as much winter as we get in southern Ontario but aren’t you thinking about those problems?

@@TheIoniqGuyI have the 23 Niro EV which is the same platform. If you go to the info screen on the driver display and scroll down via the steering wheel buttons the speed is displayed.

Is it quieter than the previous Kona?
@TheIoniqGuy11 ай бұрын
Been a while since I drove the old Kona so will have to do a back to back soon

Much quieter. Much less road and wind noise. Smoother too.

Interesting. This car compare to the Niro IMHO. 24:42 So does the higher trims has double windows (I guess no)? Also, compared to the ioniq5: no AWD, less range, 400V architecture, less rear room (if needed), a tad less cargo if I'm not mistaken, more noisy, etc. Smaller wheels is a plus. IMHO, it's an interesting car but I found the price/performance better on the ioniq5. Funny because it's a bit what peoples say about the Niro EV: interesting car but not the best price/performance. I'm asking because I'm in Québec (thus the imperfect english) and provincial rebate goes from 7000$ to 4000$ in january. I wanted a 2025 ioniq 5 and news are not good. Seems they will build them late this year and start to deliver early 2025. A bit frustrating. So I either take a B plan or keep my 2017 priusV. The later seems the better option. Oh well, first world problem I guess... Thanks for the review.

Don't jump on the Kona before trying a Niro. We own an I5 and a Niro and I've driven a Kona Ev as a rental many times and I feel the Niro EV drives much better. Give em both a try.

You won't have to wait very much longer for the refreshed 2025 Ioniq 5 if you prefer that
@igiveupfine9 ай бұрын
@@TheIoniqGuy my 2023 just got totaled due to bad weather last week. Not sure if I should start one of the amazing leases that are going on right now, or hold out for a 2025. I got spoiled by all the features my 2023 limited had. I would hate to go back a car that had "less than that". But 10% more battery, rear wiper, ccnc, full OTA updates and digital rearview mirror? Might be worth the wait.

I personally hate the looks & the size. It’s ridiculous that we can’t have at least a few small cars.

The size increase is a definite negative for me. I prefer the smaller size greatly.
