the first thing I thought when watching videos of reviewers complaining of the open storage and not hiding their crap, is that as an open storage, large purses and small bags will fit in there securely while still flowing out. Can't do that in a closed storage area. Smart, imo.

Still recommend to others in this price range who live in cold climates the Niro EV over the Kona since Hyundai hates specifically the US for whatever reason and wont let you get a heat pump for improved efficiency. Heck, its not even a North America market problem as Canada has had the heat pump in the Kona EV for years now.

Yeah, I wonder how much range you might lose driving a Kona in cold weather without a heat pump. British versions have heat pump, why not US? ☹️
@AdamPranda

@@bnovak2937 From previous experience driving a Bolt EV, which doesn't have a heat pump, the steady state difference in power draw is ~1-4kW depending on the temperature. So for longer drives the efficiency difference will be more pronounced. As for the US trim differences, it's always been about the profit margin. Hyundai cuts a ton of features here to try to be competitive on price, rather than options/features. Kia is significantly more competitive on features but is slightly more expensive, but at least you are given the option to choose.

Thanks for the comparison video. I also happen to have Kona EV which is coming up on lease this year. I have the Ultimate trim but looks like if I'm not mistaken, the torque on the new one is less. The previous gen was 201hp and 295lbtq. Also my range since day one had been between 280-302miles and of course more fluctuation in the winter as I'm also in snow country. Bigger size is huge help especially with a car sear which makes the front passenger seat almost unusable. I have been getting about 4.2kwh with the higest I saw was 5.3kwh which was of course city driving.

I had a 2019 Kona EV Ultimate that I loved it until it was bought back due to battery fire issues. My biggest issue remains - I don't want a car with FWD and EV torque as the power delivery is uneven and torque steer is annoying. Having now lived with both 2023 Model 3 RWD and a 2021 Polestar 2 (AWD/Dual Motor), I just can't ever see going back to FWD. I am curious how this stacks up to the Volvo EX30. On paper, the Volvo seems significantly better in most areas with the notable exception of rear seat/cargo space. I am glad to see Hyundai improve the Kona - I just really wish they would give it RWD/AWD.

@TheIoniqGuy
@TheIoniqGuy 11 ай бұрын
All Ioniq 5s actually also have a resistance heater. The heat pump only works down to a certain point where it begins to slowly not work as efficiently and then the resistance heater will compensate. The resistance heater will also be used on startup to rapidly heat the cabin and then transition to the heat pump to maintain
@leslarson2642
@leslarson2642 11 ай бұрын
Correct and I understand the limitations of heat pumps. Basically, once the ambient temperature drops below a certain temperature, say 10F, a heat pump is no better than a resistive heater, losing its thermal advantage. But the heat pump still produces heat, which is added to the resistive heater. If there is only a resistive heater, it better be really large to compensate for the lack of the heat pump. Like I have said, I have seen almost 7 kW on my climate display. That is a lot of power. Thanks for the reply.

What's the charging curve for this model year 2024 Kona Electric? Its max 100 kW charging speed, how long is it maintained in ideal conditions? eg, for a brief period , say around 50-60% SOC, or longer, say 20-70%?
@colinsullivan8416
@colinsullivan8416 11 ай бұрын
Teslabjorn has videos showing the charging performance. It’s pretty good! It starts at 90Kw below 10% SOC and slowly creeps up higher and higher as the battery pack voltage increases. Its true peak is at 63% SOC at 100kw or slightly above. So you can think of it as basically flat 90-100kw all the way to 63%. Then it drops to 79Kw until it reaches 69%. Above that it drops below 50Kw. All this to say is that they are emphasizing the wrong charging time in their marketing materials. It’s 10-80% in 43 min, but 10-70% in just 27min. 16 extra minutes for the extra 10 percent is a waste in my opinion. Get back in the road at 70 and you’ll spend overall less time charging over multiple stops.

Looking at the potential of getting the Kona EV Limited (power liftgate + all LED lights) instead of ICE Limited if my math is correct and the dealers in NJ STILL deduct the Federal and NJ State tax credits from the MSRP (when leasing, as I do). Wish they actually gave you a small spare tire like the ICE Kona versions. Especially since there's room for one. Also looking at a Toyota Cross hybrid but those don't give you a spare tire either, and that hybrid model is still in short supply (WTF Toyota!?). Let's see what happens when I'm ready to give our my "final rose" come this summer.

2 Questions: Does the USA spec model get a heat pump? Does it come with VTL adapter included?
@TheIoniqGuy

No heat pump in the US. V2L only works on the limited trim and I’m not sure if it comes with the adapter
@blurrylens
@blurrylens 11 ай бұрын
@@TheIoniqGuy I know they need to cut some corners to keep the price down but kind of disappointing. How much could it cost them to give every trim level VTL? Seems a bit short-sighted on Hyundai's part.

I’m with you! I even brought my adapter for shooting this video thinking it was going to have it. I told Hyundai the other day they need to make it more obvious. None of their marketing material even says the Limited has V2L. It’s almost like they’re trying to hide it

The Kona looks decent for the money. I'm worried about the efficiency on the Kona. Larger battery pack, more weight, colder weather. I'm still getting close to 5 kWh in Upstate NY in my 2021 Hyundai Ioniq EV. It's looking like I'll be crossing the Kona EV off my list. No heat pump as well. I preordered a 2025 Volvo EX30 anyway.

I'll take a charge port in the back of the car any day of the week just like a gas car. I back into my driveway, don't have a garage and the charge cord is only so long plus I don't want want to expose that connection to bystanders on the street having it on the front. Kia has at least been consistent on the back right but I suspect it may move to the back left to match Tesla when they move to NACS.

does it feel a lot slower than the outgoing model with a far lower torque rating?

Definitely feels slower off the line. But it’s still plenty peppy. Less wheel chirping too with the lower torque figure.

If I were to get an around town EV, this would be high on the list. Looking forward to the CCNC coming to the IONIQ line up. If they could just get iPhone as a key and wireless Apple CarPlay on my 2023 IONIQ 5 Limited it would feel like I spent my money wisely, they were glad to have me around and were welcoming my to the next purchase. #forgottencustomer 27:26

I don’t understand still putting the speedometer on the left, I’m 6-4 and still haven’t found a good sitting position that allows me to see speed in my i5. The speed should be dead center imo.

I know you like the front charge port but when you drive in winter I think the door might get iced in. Plus with slush and dirt you would get your hand dirty when opening the door. I think you get as much winter as we get in southern Ontario but aren’t you thinking about those problems?

Interesting. This car compare to the Niro IMHO. 24:42 So does the higher trims has double windows (I guess no)? Also, compared to the ioniq5: no AWD, less range, 400V architecture, less rear room (if needed), a tad less cargo if I'm not mistaken, more noisy, etc. Smaller wheels is a plus. IMHO, it's an interesting car but I found the price/performance better on the ioniq5. Funny because it's a bit what peoples say about the Niro EV: interesting car but not the best price/performance. I'm asking because I'm in Québec (thus the imperfect english) and provincial rebate goes from 7000$ to 4000$ in january. I wanted a 2025 ioniq 5 and news are not good. Seems they will build them late this year and start to deliver early 2025. A bit frustrating. So I either take a B plan or keep my 2017 priusV. The later seems the better option. Oh well, first world problem I guess... Thanks for the review.

@@TheIoniqGuy my 2023 just got totaled due to bad weather last week. Not sure if I should start one of the amazing leases that are going on right now, or hold out for a 2025. I got spoiled by all the features my 2023 limited had. I would hate to go back a car that had "less than that". But 10% more battery, rear wiper, ccnc, full OTA updates and digital rearview mirror? Might be worth the wait.
