Something I LOVE about this episode's Tao story is that Tao is a GIGANTIC movie fan and many romance movies contain the trope of the "necessary makeover" that is a part of "winning the prize" of another person's love but, that doesn't translate into life at all. So, they have Tao enact that trope and - unlike movie characters - Elle is not drawn in by this. She genuinely cares for and is interested in Tao for who he already is, so the enactment of the movie trope (which makes so much sense for a young person steeped in movie references) backfires. Because that trope isn't a healthy trope and this show is very much about underlining healthy ways of relating to others and yourself instead of enacting more traditional movie and TV tropes surrounding love. Its a really strong and splendidly subversive choice. Tao's hair is a great example because its a very specific and personalized style and cutting it, symbolically, for this makeover is about conforming to an expected norm... which is not what Elle is about and not what Heattstopper is about. So cutting it sets Tao back rather than advancing his aims or his narrative. Smart writing. Love this show.

If you go back and rewatch the confrontation scene at the cinema from last season, Otis, Sai and Christian were visibly very uncomfortable with how Harry was acting. I’m glad they worked them back in this season as ‘still’ Nick’s friends - like Imogen.

I didn't find Tao and Elle's date disaster that surprising. They've been friends forever and hid their feelings for each other. Elle just wanted to let Tao know that she loves him for who he is. She fell in love with the Tao we've seen since episode 1 and he doesn't need to do anything special to make her happy.

I think the fact Elle was starting to distance herself from him to get over him created this strange new aura to their friendship and Tao was trying hard to get it back to a status quo but instead made it worse by ignoring the fact they already had a bond established based on things they both like, but he chose a thing she really likes but he doesn’t. And it only illuminated the difference between them he see creating a drift.

I know that Nick should take his time and come out on his terms and his own time. But Charlie really worries me,. He takes on everything, he accepts everything, he puts his feelings last , its like he's invisible. The look on Tori's face on episode 1, still has me hunted.

this is exactly the kind of thing that people don’t pick up on!!! charlie is really suffering but he’s like pretending he’s fine and avoiding the real issue. it’s such a good way to bring awareness to mental health because it’s something we can’t see but is happening under our noses and we should really strive to paying attention and picking up on our loved ones behaviors/actions/habits etc. because you never know what they might be going through internally. it breaks my heart knowing that charlie is fighting this alone and hasn’t even told a single soul…i wish people would appreciate charlie more 💔

@@rottenangelx3 Tori knows. Charlie is always putting himself dead last to the detriment of his grades, his friendships, his physical and mental well being. He's been told he's 'less than' and sadly he's internalized it. This is going to take a long time for him to learn he needs to care for himself as much as he is so willing to care for others. He breaks my heart. As good as Nick is, I feel Charlie is even better.

@@JessIrais i wouldn’t say dragging. that’s exactly why charlie doesn’t tell anyone because he doesn’t want to “drag” or “burden” anyone. this isn’t nicks fight, it’s charlie’s. nick can’t really do anything no matter how much he loves charlie. nick will struggle with figuring out how to help him but realize he can’t. such an important message for spreading awareness that someone’s love or effort can’t fix the others mental illness, it has to come from the one with the mental illness. charlie is so strong and we know he can overcome this❤️ it will just take time.

The final scene in this episode was just so cute, warm and comforting. Nick resting his head on Charlie, it feels like whenever Nick cuddles up to Charlie, he feels the most secure, protected and comfortable. Such a simple scene, but conveyed so much emotion.

Promise has multiple parallels and connections with season one. 1- the episode title slide parallels the last episode of season one, the beach scene/the episode title of s1e8. Which is referenced later when Nick apologizes for not keeping his coming out promise. 2- in that parallel 3rd episode of season one. That’s the Tao-Elle reference. In s1e3 was the movie night that Tao and Elle ended up alone (Charlie went to the party and Isaac was sick). During that episode Tao made Elle promise to prioritize their friendship. And then they held hands and it was natural, but in the movie theater it’s very awkward and not-like them. 3- s1e3 Harry interrupted their moment and Nick was alone when he went to confront Harry. This time Charlie found him and told Harry off.

As a teacher, Coach Singh catching them in the shed and then making that little step out before coming back is so relatable. The amount of times I’ve caught kids doing something they technically shouldn’t be doing but that isn’t dangerous or harmful. I try to pick my battles, but if the kids see that you saw, you HAVE to address it… even if you don’t want to 😂 Like once I saw my student kissing her boyfriend between class on my way to the bathroom. They’re not supposed to kiss at school, but I 1) Don’t personally care as long as there’s consent between them and 2) If I don’t catch them, someone else will sooooo I’m just going to keep going on my path. But they saw me… and so I HAD to get involved. Ugh 😂😂😂

The short moment between Charlie and Nick's mother, where Nick's mother says Nick caught a bit of sunstroke when out walking Nellie - this was done because Kit in real life is has very sensitive skin and gets sunburnt a lot. Nick (or at least Kit) is definitely a ginger. The makeup covers a lot of his freckles this season, but in season 1, we got to see just how freckled he is, even having freckles on his hands. And they're the orangey freckles that gingers have. Definitely a ginger, even if his hair is more brownish red than orange red.

Yes, Kit Connor ergo Nick is a ginger. If you look at his hair, and skin in the right lighting you can tell his hair is reddish brown, and he has LOTS of freckles on his face and arms as well.

Not debating, just musing... 1. Does Kit Connor have freckles? I have been going back to season one and comparing season 1 and season2 Nick/Kit. (When Kit was filming season 1, he was 17; when he filmed season 2, he was 18. Within the space of time between the 2 filmings, Kit had a growth spurt and filled out. -- Just an aside.) In season 1, Kit had a gazilion freckles on his face, arms, even fingers. (Love the freckles!!) (Check him out during the kissing scene of 1x03 (as good an excuse as any to re-watch that scene 😉)) (Nick was also a bit baby-faced compared to season 2 Nick. (Just an aside)) In season 2, the makeup department seems to have decided that the freckles should go (or be reduced); the ones on his face seem to be covered up. I miss the freckles. And what color is Kit Connor's hair? And what color is Nick's hair? When and where I grew up, no one used the word 'ginger' as a hair color. We had very boring basic hair color terms -- brown, red, blonde. So I looked up 'ginger hair color' -- and on that page were many pictures of women with what we called your basic red hair. I looked up strawberry blonde (a color someone here mentioned) -- on that page were many pictures of women with basically blonde hair with reddish tinges. More blonde than red. Then I started rebinging seasons 1 and 2 and saw that Nick's hair varied a lot with the lighting. Drove me crazy. Sometimes, Nick/Kit's hair was straight up red (so I guess that's ginger). Other times, in some scenes and lighting, Nick's hair looked more muted, almost brown (but with small bits of reddish tinge.) Some times his hair changed color in the same scene as he moved from sunny areas to darker ones. When his hair hovered between brown and reddish, it looked to me like the color of unshined copper pennies. In season 1, I saw more of the muted copper color. At the beginning of season 2 (like 2x01, first scene in which Nick covers Charlie's eyes before taking him into the closet to announce his coming out to his mom) -- his hair was definitely red (aka ginger). But again it changes with the lighting. (I think I did see his hair look lighter in some season 2 scenes (so maybe that's why some people call it strawberry blonde)) So if 'ginger' is another word for red hair, then ginger it is. And someone seemed to say that the freckles plus red hair = ginger. So there ya go. [My first association with the word ginger, was when the Tenth Doctor (David Tennant) emerged after his regeneration, he asked Rose if he was a ginger. He was disappointed when Rose said it was just brown.]😁
