With the ending of last weeks video, link below in case you missed it, ending without the normal details of what we removed or what the plan was with the bees, I decided to do a follow up, or rather a pick up of where we left off. Most of the balling I witnessed come with the bees stinging the bee. Even 1 sting is enough to kill a queen... Have it happen to me a couple times before. I merge colonies a couple times per year because for a couple of years I have been breeding purebred Buckfast bees. Small boxes that return from the islands stand no chance next to my large hives, So I merge asap to make them bigger. The best result I get is when I use an arrest frame, only 1 queen being replaced from 16 total so far and counting. How my method looks like: You take an old frame, remove the wiring from it and wax. You staple iron mesh over to cover 1 side. Repeat this for another frame, you now have 2 sides. Remove the ears. Place a 3rd frame in the middle and staple some iron mesh again on the outside frames at the bottom side. Now you have to frames together, you have the arrest frame. You can remove the frame from the middle. You can staple some iron mesh over the top on 1 frame to make a lock out of it. Take out an hatching frame out of a hive. Knock off all the bees and ensure 100% it is free from bees. Place this hatching frame in the middle of the arrest frame and after this is done catch your queen, place her on the hatching frame. Make sure no robber bees in the meantime landed on your hatching frame. Close up the frame and place it for 1 week in a hive with young bees. From the moment you place the bees in, start heavy feeding of 1:1 sirup. After 1 week the queen is laying up all the hatched-out cells and she gets take care of by the young bees. After a week there is enough feromone for her to get accepted. Only had once where the queen was no laying after a week, decided to release her and she was killed. Other option is: If you have a small hive and want to merge the queenright small hive with a larger hive: Put a newspaper between both hives. Feed heavy with sugar water. For some reason, bees get more relaxed if you feed them

A single sheet of newspaper between the two colonies works fine. However, the queenless one needs to be queenless for at least several days, to allow the scent to dissipate. So you can box up the framed brood from the cutout, toss the buckets back in and let it rest next to you donar. Then combine them. It's pretty much a walk away for a full day, then open and find the paper chewed thru and all is fine. Works every time. Gives each time to sniff the other.

Yes, it does work, but if the bees had already started making emergency cells like the had done in this video and not to my knowledge, they will not accept another queen no matter how many layers of paper you place between them. Thanks for watching. God's peace brother. Mr. Ed

Man the life of a bee !!! I have a colony that lost its queen for whatever reason so I introduced one that I had grafted and waited the 3 days before releasing her and they rejected her also …so today I will try again .. maybe I’ll load them up with some sugar water and see if that helps ..thanks again for the great videos mr Ed !!!

The derth is a hard time to get bees to accept a new queen. The best results I've had is using a push in cage. I try to Place it over emerging brood with some empty cells for her to lay in, and some honey. I leave her under the cage for at least 7 to 10 days. My success rate is usually greater than 90%. Mr Ed, I watch most of your videos.... only, I tend to binge watch and it might be months before I watch them (I'm up in Canada, so they aren't really relevant) and you get so many comments, I don't want to repeat something someone has already said. I fell into Randy's videos a few years back and... he wasn't wearing a suit! I started watching him, as I'd love to have a beehive... but like you, I'd be suited up and more... but he's got me convinced, that with the right queen, and slow, careful movements ( no squished bees), I wouldn't have to. He's the one that turned me on to you. I love the friendly banter between the both of you. This video topped my feed so I watched it immediately. It was that bold yellow jacket that landed right in the middle of the bucket that drove me to comment. I've heard you say you've killed nests but I've not seen a video of one being taken out so I haven't thought you destroyed many... that's alright as I'm tuning in for the bees! It's just that yellow jackets are so 'in your face' this time of year and my new service dog hates everything with wings! She's going to get stung if she snaps her jaws on one of them! I've had to drag her away from several as she is determined to save me from them... I have to love her for it... but...

WellGeorge, you will bee happy to hear that I have a great distain, almost hatred, for yellow jackets, and I will often go out of my way to kill them, or even better yet, destroy a colony of them. In fact, 2 weeks ago I killed a colony that was in the ground, and after killing them with about 1/2 gallon of gas that I poured down their entrance, I dug up the next to make sure it was dead. It was larger than a basketball, man did I feel good, I bet I killed over a thousand of them. And talking about wearing a suit, I always wear my suit when killing yellow jacket colonies, those sucker can sting multiple time as bite at the same time. They just need to die! Interesting. The only experience I have with merging bees together is by using the newspaper method. It always worked for me and never lost a queen. I never had my queen in a cage either. Her girls could protect her while the other bees slowly merged together. The did merge well from what you did.

I remember seeing on television how a special kind of queen bee cage with a door made out of sugar blocking passage between the queen and the colony is used such that all the bees are so busy trying to execute her that they have to eat away at the sugar door, and it takes two weeks to break through, which is enough time for the bees to adjust to her pheromones.

The cages that use sugar to prevent the queen from escaping and other bees from entering the cage are called sugar plug cages, and they are very effective when introducing a new queen to a colony as it gives the bees a chance to acquaint themselves with the new queen's pheromone. It’s only rained a 1/2” here in my area of Texas over 3 months. Grass is dead and trees have shed most of their leaves. I lost my entire pecan crop because of no rainfall. I’ll be watering trees most of the day today. I lost about 20 young trees this year.

Hi Jeff. It's September today !! It's 57F here in Montreal right now at 7:40am. Is there a fear those bees might swarm out of that box at some point, or do you think they will stay?? I guess, if they haven't already wanted to "Bug Out" they would have, right? I know Mr. Green Jeans over at Fall Line Ridge lost some of his queens, and he ordered a few "Queens" to add back to his queen-less hives. He did not have a store of queen cells to bank on. Hope it works out.

They do that sometimes. When it's early enough in the year, I will give them a frame of fresh eggs from another hive and let them make a new queen. Where I live, you can do that up until early July. This late in the year, I just combine them with another hive or - when it's not a very strong hive - I just let the hive die (and I harvest any honey and wax). I learned through the years, sometimes a hive is a lost cause and it's not worth trying to save them. I do use the "newspaper method" when I have to combine a lot of bees.

When trying to come up with a solution for getting the bees from the removal into a hive after their queen died, my first consideration was needing to do it a quickly as possible. After bees are removed from a structure they are VERY stressed, and the of resumption the daily duties of the bees is the quickest way of restoring tranquility in the hive and the removal of stress. For that reason I chose to cage the queen from the hive I would use to merge the two colonies and simply dump the removal bees bees in mass into the hive. No smoke, no paper, just an overwhelming number of new bees into a hive that was already established with their queen caged so as the new bees could not harm her. As it turned out, the merge went flawlessly with little or no loss due to fighting. The problem arose when I released the queen and she was killed. When that happened I was surprised as I truly thought that by the bees behavior they would have accepted her as their queen as well. Jeff, I wonder if you would have done better with leaving the queen right hive in their spot. Taken the cut out and put it in a 10 frame on a bottom board with its frames that you banded together. After you dumped them in their 10 frame you could have put newspaper over the queen right hive and then stuck the queen less 10 frame on top.

I find that colonies will blame their queen if there are poor crops or lack of stores, kill her and replace her. I wonder if part of the issue was that they were upset about the cutout (of course!), got into the new hive and saw minimal stores, and killed her because they were unhappy? Bees can be fickle critters! Of course there is always that hindsight and "what if's", that's what makes beekeeping so so so interesting!

Hi Jeff, I would think that just putting the new hive on top but separated by a screened board with it's own entrance for a few days should allow the bees to get used to the queen's pheromones, then swap the screen for a sheet of newspaper.

Fascinating video. I accidentally stumbled upon beekeeping KZbin yesterday and after watching way too many beekeeping videos, I am officially a certified KZbin-trained beekeeping expert. This means I know nothing about beekeeping so I'll ask. Would smoking the bees ease the introduction of a new queen or the acceptance of new hive members? If smoke eases the aggression caused by hive disturbances like hive removal or honey removal, why wouldn't it ease this aggression?

First, thank you for stumbling across beekeeping on KZbin and especially for watching some of mine. Smoke is a very good tool to use in beekeeping as it masks pheromone and bees lose the ability to communicate. However, the use of it does cause stress to bees, and for that reason it should be used sparingly. That being said, it can be very useful when merging colonies, robbing the hive of honey, and doing removals, but I have never used it to introduce a new queen into the colony as the bees need to adjust to the new queen's pheromone and smoke covers that. I sure wish my husband and I were able to travel and come meet you and Mona and tour the bee house and the Abby. My husband was raised Catholic, but I am Baptist...and he found God with my spiritual dad who was a Baptist minister and in the church I went to with them and the one I ended up going with a friend to in our neighborhood. I loved it when my husband started wanting to go to church when he saw the positive change it made in me. And the first time the Holy Spirit moved him in church was so amazing! He thought those of us in the little congregation felt the Spirit move and we would be like a wind had blown through and tears and joy all around...freaked him out! He wanted it bad, and he got it! Grabbed my hand and was just in awe with tears streaming down his face. He went to the alter to pray with me that day and on his own even. I miss our church and the church family I had. Our church fell apart when our pastor got arrested...still can't believe what happened with that. Never before or after felt such a strong presence of God moving in a pastor. But he was human with a thorn that cost him dearly. I hope his time in prison helped others come to know Jesus. I too am a sinner and can't throw stones at anyone. Blessings to you and yours~

I am like world famous Mike Berry; here’s how I direct mix colonies. I make sure the colony with the queen is kept in a block with their queen in the center of the block of bees. It has been my experience that the bees will protect their queen from the bees being added until their odors have had a chance to mix or change or whatever they do. That has always worked for me but having said that, it may not the next time I try it!!

It is not uncommon at all to have bees kill a queen that is trying to be introduce to a queen less hive, I just thought the bees were ready for her.When trying to come up with a solution for getting the bees from the removal into a hive after their queen died, my first consideration was needing to do it as quickly as possible. After bees are removed from a structure they are VERY stressed, and the resumption of the daily duties of the bees is the quickest way of restoring tranquility in the hive and the removal of stress. For that reason I chose to cage the queen from the hive I would use to merge the two colonies and simply dump the removal bees in mass into the hive. No smoke, no paper, just an overwhelming number of new bees into a hive that was already established with their queen caged so as the new bees could not harm her. As it turned out, the merge went flawlessly with little or no loss due to fighting. The problem arose when I released the queen and she was killed. When that happened I was surprised as I truly thought that by the bees behavior they would have accepted her as their queen as well. Jeff I had a hive that wouldn't accept a mated or virgin queen.the nuc I tried to introduce with quen they kill queen and made a cell. It wa time because the hold process took about a month and half to 2 mo ths hope allgoes well with yours.thank you for the video

Hi, Mr. Ed. Love your devotion. This video made me think of alternative ways to introduce that last queen. Maybe, and just maybe, the queen-right colony could have been made queenless first, so they started emergency cells while the cut-out bees were dumped into a separate box with the caged queen. I'm guessing that the cut-out bees were already queenless long enough to want a queen, and maybe they would have eventually accepted the caged queen. If that happened, the cutout bees would be queen-right, while the former queen-right colony is still rearing queen cells. It would be possible then to knock down the queen cells, and after a queenless period, paper unite the two colonies. Just a thought.

Mr Jeff, I'm not sure, but I don't think your gas cans are made of food grade plastic. I small watering can for plants may be better. They have some that have a long slim beak. An old tea pot may even do better.

I don’t know if thing about bees. I do have a great interest in lots of curiosity, type questions. One item interested to know is why the conventional way of merging bees without a queen with bees who have a queen doesn’t work. Is there some rationale for inventing a method that isn’t generally used? Sure would like to hear some of your decision making thoughts on how and why. Thanks for any edification!

Because very often situations arise spontaneously when wrangling bees, and "conventional" methods wouldn't apply so, improvisation is necessary. In my opinion, this was one of those occasions. Something needed to be done so as not to lose the queen less hive, and done quickly. As it turned out, the merge worked flawlessly, it was the queen situation that did not work the way I had hoped. Put them in an empty box, with several layers of paper towels on top and then put a weak hive on top. Give them time to acclimate and join together as a functioning hive. That is what I would do, your thoughts? Oh Jeff, ask the DirtRooster what I told him about my queen with a green dot and the green anole.😊😊

I’m surprised that none of you have heard about the newspaper way of integration of two different colonies of bees 🐝 into one hive this is done by using four separate pages of newspaper to place between two boxes of bees almost like a queen separation from the main brood box and you leave it in place for up to two weeks by this time the bees in the upper colony will have excepted the bottom colony and the paper can be removed of course you will need to feed the upper colony when doing this but it’s a good way of not loosing your queens?

Not only have I heard of using newspaper to merge colonies, but I have done it a bunch of times, and yes it does work very well. However in this case, the reason the queen was not accepted is the first hive had already started emergency cells and had made up their minds that that queen was going to be their queen, and if you look at the next video in this series, the third of 3 and the video link below, you will see the queen that emerged. I'm confused? I thought it was you who had the video on using newspaper to separate two colonies being introduced to each other - the queenless set up with enough food & water to stay alive while acclimating to the new hive?
