Hello from Manchester! Have only recently found your youtube channel and now find myself binge watching. I'm very envious of your change of lifestyle and oh to be younger! Its going to be a big and probably longer job than you anticipated but in the end you are going to have a beautiful home in a beautiful setting for your family to enjoy, hopefully for a long time. As I've already said, I am now binge watching and may I suggest that all future episodes are numbered so that we can all watch these in the correct order. Keep on with the good work!

When I was a kid & I used to see old falling down houses in the middle of nowhere, I used to say to my dad, "buy that & stick a caravan there & do it up"! He used to just laugh at me😡 Fast forward a good few years & someone bought the houses I'd said it about & were doing just that. One was on Anglesey & the other in Etherow. They were both done beautifully & now would cost an arm & a leg & then the other arm & leg on top to buy now!! Whenever we drove past them when they were finished, I used to say to him, "remember when I told you to buy that & do it up?"😂 Nobody loves a smart a*$e though😂😂

We lived in house in a village in Italy that was built in 1849. The interior wood shutters on the windows were common back then. No drapes on windows then. No indoor plumbing either. They had a small shed that was attached to the home. It had space for the animals and separately was a small room for a toilet and bath. Which I am sure was not added on until well into the 1940’s because the town had no sewage until after WW2. No indoor water either. The town still had the communal place where the ladies did their laundry. And they could get water for the house. It was near a spring. I live in Canada now and can’t imagine going back. Lived from 1981-83 that was plenty.

I am very excited for your future lifestyle. May it be everything you wish it to be. Will you stay there and live in the van while you work on your home ?
@theirishhomestead Жыл бұрын
We wish we could keep the motorhome but sadly it's just too expensive to keep for occasional use over the next year or so whilst our focus is the house. We will have to sell George to fund the renovations.

Definitely put under floor heating in cos it’s cheap and you will love it.
@theirishhomestead Жыл бұрын
We are definitely considering it! Lots are doing it over here now.

Welcome from south Leitrim. We have underfloor heating in our house and it's great. But, as I'm sure you already know, you'll need to make sure you have plenty of insulation in the floor to lay the underfloor water pipes on.

I would love to live in Ireland or Scotland someday if possible! I've always lived in the country and grew up on a farm in Idaho. So I've only known rural life. What does property like this cost?
@theirishhomestead Жыл бұрын
Hi, hope you get your dream someday soon. We paid €55k for this property. Hope this helps. Good luck. ☺️
@MarkFugitive-5 ай бұрын
If you ever do decide to do it make sure you familiarise yourself well with the country and where best to locate. Property in Ireland is generally expensive but there are gems like this if you're happy to live remotely.

The outhouse building . You've taken down the broken roof part in middle. The square Gray brick thing why not turn it into a fish pond. It look brilliant

We want to retain it as a water trough. Our aim in the future is to remain 'off grid' and be as self-sufficient as possible. We think it's a great thing to hold on to. Let's be honest in Ireland it will never be empty 🤣

What system are you using for water while getting things organised? Do you think you will have any issues with Ireland's ridiculously strict panning laws (if you don't happen to be originally from the county you're seeking planning permission in)? Best of luck with your new home
@theirishhomestead Жыл бұрын
The farmer is kindly allowing us the temporary use of his water supply. We are not changing the footprint of the house so hopefully planning will not be a problem. 👍
@duncancremin1708 Жыл бұрын
That seems to be the case. You could be unlucky, if there’s an awkward neighbour, because technically you’re changing the use of at least part of the property, from agriculture to residential. Usually that’s not a problem, but we had a difficult, anonymous neighbour who objected to us parking on our own property, so rather than deal with all that, we park on the road outside. We’re here long enough now that I’m sure we could try again, but we’re used to it now.
@theirishhomestead Жыл бұрын
Wow, that's frustrating! People can be so odd! So far, we have been treated wonderfully here, and our neighbours seem great. I think you have been unlucky for sure. I mean, why stop you from parking on your driveway, utterly bonkers! Hope you get it sorted & pray we don't encounter such pettiness!
@duncancremin1708 Жыл бұрын
In fairness to all concerned, our property didn’t have a driveway as nd we were parking in a field. The planning officer who came to see us explained that that constitutes a change of use, from agriculture to vehicular and there had been a complaint. Of course, he wanted me to engage with the planning process and get permission to park in my own garden, but the budget wouldn’t allow, even if my principles did! We will never know which individual decided to make life awkward, rather than speak to me, nor why, but everyone else has been super and we have excellent friends here who support us in every possible way. That’s the Irish way.

I'd say it's fairly common to see make shift things in old irish houses especially ones that were around during the famine because they just didn't have anything
@theirishhomestead9 ай бұрын
That's very true, but this house was lived in until the 60s

Alright the transition begins from Van Lifers to Homesteaders. This is a beautiful piece of property for sure but you can do so much on an acre.
@theirishhomestead9 ай бұрын
Yes it is really beautiful. We just fell in love with it. Wish it had more than an acre but we can as you say do a lot with that.
@SharonDLorse Жыл бұрын
That so seems like more than an acre. Lots of space
@theirishhomestead Жыл бұрын
I think it is just over an acre actually. We have never measured it! It feels just the right size for us.

Welcome to Ireland, this place has huge potential, thanks for showing it to us, An inside-outside space is important in Ireland because it rains a lot, that hay shed would work well, all you need is to roof it , and put an outside heater in place, no walls somewhere you can sit outside when its raining, can be used for working on carpentry projects, drying clothes, repairing cars, a swing for the kids etc.
@theirishhomestead Жыл бұрын
Thanks Johnny, yes I think Sam has plans for it as a workshop, but yes, drying clothes in rainy weather is a good idea 💡We appreciate your help.

Wow! What an amazing adventure. An old 4x4 and a tractor with a platform on the back and a hydraulic lift on the front to get up high should start you off well. Best of luck on your new adventure.

Let's hope we get help from our farming neighbours as not sure we have the budget for those! 🤣 Thanks for the good luck message x

@@theirishhomestead look for old tractors at the sea side - used to drag boats to the launch. Or seek the help of one of those KZbinrs who pride themselves on starting the old machines left in the fields for years may be able to help. Im sure if you asked half the farmers around the neighbourhood would have heaps of old materials they’d love to drop off. Best :)
