As a single woman I bought a "wreck" in France thirty years ago. I had no bank loan, so it took a while to do especially as I lived and worked in UK. I moved in full time 12 years ago and it is all done now including new roof, new windows, a total drainage and water system, new electrics, insulation, and floors etc. Worth doing. I wish you luck. I lived two years in Ireland and always felt so sad that those lovely cottages were left to rot, and new builds were spouting everywhere. It is fantastic that you are saving this old place. Good for you!

This is an awesome project. But what baffles me every time I watch renovation projects is how people buy expensive tools and machines but then they save money on safety. In this case: no eye protection while working with the weedwacker and also the kids are standing right next to it. Those bits and pieces flying around can take an eye out. A pair of safety glasses do not cost a lot of money...

The baby birds are a full time job and take a LOT of dedication to keep alive, as a baby they need to eat every 25 to 30 minutes all day long and kept warm especially at night. Your Son was so precious trying to find food for the Bird. You will have a beautiful place to call home as you finish each job. Things will take shape before you know it.

The property we bought 3 years ago in NE Scotland came with an old cottage in pretty good condition but very old decor, and a large byre very similarly laid out to your barn. Concrete floor put in on the right side and still has cobbles on the left where the original feeding troughs are. We store additional wood in the left side and right is a workshop with additional fridges and freezers so we can keep stocked up, being a fair distance from most amenities. We recently added raised beds and a polytunnel so can grow our own fruit and veg. I'll be following your story with interest, best of luck with all you plan to do. 👍🏼🙂

30 years ago we brought a rundown farm, we dropped some trees in the 2.5 acre garden, should have taken out 12 more, plus should have used a digger to remove some of the pest ground covers. Sheep had lived in parts of the garden for 10 years or so. Best of luck.
@theirishhomestead

Yes we have probably around 11 dead/dying trees that we really need to fell. Sadly this whole place was like a forest but when the house went on the market the trees were cleared leaving only the ones around the edge and I think disease/damage plus not being in a orotected group had meant they are now mostly on their way out😪. It's a cost we haven't budgeted for but will have to think about it sooner rather than later. 😞

That looks a lot like County Cavan, with the rolling hills and waterways. If so, we’re not that far apart, in the next county, in fact. Might be a possible collaboration opportunity, for larger things, or where more hands are required. You mentioned a digger. I’ve been trying to get hold of a digger, for a little over a year and will sort it, eventually. Moving them around is a bit of a pain, but over short distances, farmers have ways and means.

There used to be cheaper rates for imported leisure vehicles and commercials, compared to cars, so it might be worthwhile putting a free ad up on donedeal, for your UK registered camper van. Also, keep in mind, the border is not far away and there’s a strong camper culture in the North, where your UK plates will pose no problem. Anyone in Co Fermanagh won’t have far to travel, to look at it.
@theirishhomestead

Thanks its definitely something we will consider if we can't sell on the UK. I did advertise it on an Irish group but no joy. Done deal may be a good shout though.

Brush cutter is very handy, but gets tiring quickly, especially with the solid blade. For cutting back blackberries and gorse, you won’t do better than a hedge knife, which you can get in your local Co op, or agricultural suppliers. Then use the brush cutter to tidy up the stalks that are left.

What does "before I go in the box" mean? Rebecca, when I lived in the country, we had yearly reoccurring Swallows under the eave of the roof, and right above my bedroom window. Every year, they'd lay eggs and every year the nest would become infested with fleas or some parasite. The parent birds would abandon the nest and leave the babies to fend for themselves. I tried to keep the babies that tried to fly out or fell out alive. I was never able to save a single baby bird. I know exactly how you felt filming this episode. 💔
@theirishhomestead

Ahb yes that was heartbreaking! We tried so hard to keep them alive. The swallows are back and I'm hoping they stay away from the house this year as we are working on it. Cannot face that again.

The grant is only available for specific situations and has many restrictions on it. Ill put a link to it here. We haven't gone into the specifics on any videos we have done of the process but you can get an idea watching our videos. The money is not guaranteed and is not paid upfront. You have to submit your claim at the end once the house is complete. Check out all the information here... www.gov.ie/en/service/f8f1b-vacant-property-refurbishment-grant/ Hope this helps. It's important that anyone interested in the grant does their own research. We don't want to give incorrect information or mislead anyone. It's a great scheme but you have a lot of things to get done first in order to benefit from it.

Boys are happy with boys toys, as usual, lol! The ground of the barn reminds me of a drainage system we can find in old buildings in France: the water goes to the ground through multiple gravel layers on top of raised stones (we call it "hérisson" in french, I don't know if it's called "hedgehog" in english); it's useful for the water not to stay in place and go up to the walls. I made my workshop in this sort of building and with a few transparent sheets on the roof, it works well!

Worth looking into if you have not already. Will try and get Nicks sailing skills developer he can sail to see you.

Hi! Hope you got out on the boat! How fabulous if Nick sailed to the Irish West Coast, that would be such an achievement. So I looked into all the options for tips/donations/buy me a coffee etc but they all took a percentage of everything, then of course paypal fees on top! We decided to do as another KZbinr has and just do a paypal link for anyone wanting to help us. Thanks for giving me the heads up to look into this.

Derek, thank you so much for your kind donation, we are thrilled! Our very first donation! So far on KZbin we have earnt £1.17 and I think they take 55% so not exactly my best ever paid job! I also signed up to buy me a coffee so thanks for making me think about it more. Becky

Looking at similar properties in Ireland, I wondered how much over the initial price advertised you end up paying?. % You see properties like this all the time advertised for less than 20k
@theirishhomestead
@theirishhomestead Жыл бұрын
Yes it's always over the advertised price, hard lesson we learned there! We saw properties advertised at €35k with offers already double that, and they were still holding out for more. I think the grants have pushed prices up. 🤔

Great vid and solid plan. only diff we did was a 7 berth caravan to move around site as needed and avoid need for planning with static. Are the kids starting school next week?
@theirishhomestead
@theirishhomestead Жыл бұрын
Yes, a caravan was something we considered, but the kids wanted their own rooms after living in a motorhome for nearly a year! Looking forward to a bit of space (in a staric - how bonkers is that?! 🤣) We home educate the kids and plan on continuing this here. If they decide they want to go to school at any point, they can. Still a lot of trauma from their time in UK schools.

@@theirishhomestead Amazon basics have a great range of Sherpa hoodies... Were all kitted up. Also it's a good idea to have a space outside the caravan for living or cooking. Our kitchen is in a pump house we built and we have outdoor furniture, covered by a sail and a nice big firepit. Not looking forward to our winter in the caravan but hoping to get the kids out by Xmas at least into their new homes!

Perhaps get the type of birds right first, before you buy a nestbox! Its a 'european starling bird' i think, anyone? Swallows are very distinct with a white breast, it is definitely not a swallow. You could have eaten the nettles as a vegetable. I dont have a farm, but i studied the plants en birds for a few years first. European starling have white sparkles on the chest, which you can already see. I am amazed how little land you took,. 4000m2 is nothing. At least you need 4 acres. All the work on the houses and living in the middle of nowhere and then not enough land to live from. I just watched the video 1 year in progress and came to here , the beginning. You could have planted berry bushes beside made artificial 2m high long hills, fruittrees, nuttrees, in the time and not only work on the houses. With 2 hectares you can have a horse, a few goats and plant lots of plants and bushes. Hope you can purchase more land in walking distance, if you want to.
